Discussion: The Grimoire Challenge

  • September 12, 2018

I have recently gone to a soul hunt and filled 28 soul gems with souls of cave and snow bears. Encountered some vampires too but they were weak and they always burn so merrily.

I have run into a lot of random vamps with these characters, alway during the day since that's when I travel.  Vamps by day are push overs, they just run and die.  It's at the point were I see them as loot pinatas or whatever the "kill it with fire" version of a pinata is.

I have met vamps under various circumstances, on the roads, both by day and by night (because I often travel at night, it's easier to sneak in the dark), in caves, in cities. They are always easy to kill with fire from behind a rock or a corner, the only inconvenient situation is when you are against them in the open and then they have death hounds. Then I just run.

Vampires by day really are like wet tissues :D too bad i like to travel in the morning i.e 3 A.M so when i get out of the dungeon i still have some of the daylight left. so wake up, Leave Tavern and oh hey Vampires ripping through guards and towns folk. I hate it. Cant use AoE or everyone gets pissed, Civilians always run arround them or stand in a circle so i cant shoot him while he kills them 1 by 1. Im tempted to try a Vampire with the Challenge :D

@Thorien:  Death hounds are terrifying expecially the pack of them you run into in the Volkihar undercroft, there's like 5 of them, if it weren't for Embrace of Shadows THT would have probably died there.

@Vez:  There are a lot of benefits that come with being a vamp that I didn't really appreciated until I did it with this challenge.  Boosts to Illusion and Sneaking are two that I always glossed over with past vamp characters but are clutch with a grimoire wizard especially if you go the sneak/fury strategy.  Plus Embrace of Shadows is an amazing panic button power.  Just stay inside during the day and don't mess with any fire mages.

So last night i tried a light mage who would join the Dawnguard, he died in the riften forest to some spiders, poison kills you very quickly when you only have 100 health.  Level 3.  Then I recreated a Thalmor character like my first one for the challenge He also died a level 3 thanks to Faen-fricking-Dal pushing him into the swinging blade trap in Bleak Falls Barrow!

I was having issues just getting past level 3 and I kept seeing that last Polvar save and figured screw it, I hopped back into the skin of Polvar the Quiet, fought my way through Arkngthamz, and again found myself standing on the ledge at the end of the dungeon.  I decided to jump instead of safely backtracking throught the dungeon.  I figured if he dies again then this truly is where his story ends but if he survives then the last one was a fluke and I would go on playing the character.  So I closed my eyes and pressed the triangle button, a few seconds later I opened them to see Polvar happily treading water.  He went on to hire Erik the Slayer in Rorikstead and fetch a sword for the ghost in Hroldan while at the same time finding the third shard and a third convector for Arniels gem.  Currently Polvar is once more spending the night at Old Hroldan still level 20.

Death hounds are terrifying anywhere, in any quantity and on any difficulty, even novice. They are a certain number three in my personal rating of the scariest things in Skyrim (after werewolves and Dwemer centurions).

And spiders in the Rift are nasty, they nearly killed me numerous times.

After acquiring the Diadem of the Savant Jodah journeyed towards Windhelm to get the Necromancer Amulet.

Then for the first time in my 7 years of playing Skyrim a Brotherhood Assassin actually snuck up on me. I noticed her the second both her blades rammed into my Chest and killed Jodah.

This will be the last try for a while.

It's their uniform isn't it? I've never understood why a guild of assassins; or thieves for that matter, wear a recognisable set of armour since all it does is give them away. Really they should spawn wearing random clothing and even better as part of another random spawn so that you let your guard down. Instead of them standing on the side of the road in red and black skin tight armour which stands out from a mile away.
