Andrew!  You aren't an old fart! You are a little bit facetious, I'll admit, but who isn't!

But seriously, what I write about (and what I'm planning to write about) could say some pretty mean things about me, and fact that I find romance discomforting detracts from my humanity a bit. At least Sildriel likes it in sensible dabs, whereas even a mite of it has been known to put me off books.

Thanks Unhelpful. I'm married and have a little girl so I've some experience in romance. It's something that you have to work at and is often fleeting but as with anything you get better with practice. It doesn't have to be smarmy or gushy either. It's a very personal thing and tends to happen in its own time. But it only happens when you put yourself in the right environment and when you're comfortable in your own skin. That enough old fart for ya?

Nope, not old farty at all. That's exactly the kind of thing my 15-year-old pen pal says to me about romance and crushes.  But it's not so much about me being nervous as it is the fact that I just am not interested in it. Ah well, maybe when I'm older I'll start to feel differently about romantic love.  Give me time to become an old fart as well.

    Suggestions for next discussion:

How to build suspense in a story

How to make the reader become emotionally bound to the character

Cliches - the Ups and Downs

Use of Prose (How many adverbs and adjectives are simply too much in a story, describing environment, etc.)
