I've really been using mounted combat a lot lately and this build really fits my style of play so I quite like it. Hands down the most powerful combination I've been using is Marked for Death (1 word) followed shortly after by elemental flurry and dual wielding, it's so ridiculously powerful I find I can even drop smithing altogether without much trouble...might be something worth trying.
There was another build that used mounted combat and crossbows but it escapes me right now, he used storm call and the archery slowtime perk to kick major ass. Crossbows and horses is such a fun combo.

I hated them so much when Dawnguard came out, they were too much like missle launchers...but they've grown on me. I love the punch they have and I'm a sucker for stagger, just don't use the enhanced crossbow with Marked for Death (I'm still mad at that one).

I use a hunting bow on my main character and have never needed anything higher leveled so it's certainly doable. The beauty of Hunting bows is they have a fairly good range with a very good draw speed, and they benefit from the Steel smithing perk so with a 1 perk investment you can double upgrade it...very cost efficient.
