I think general gaming wont become big without free, no-pay-to-win/play-games
The only type of game I can think of that fits that bill would be a Free-to-Play MMORPG. There are two big problems MMOs have when it comes to building.
One, the meta (what's viable, whats obsolete etc) changes quite often. Second, most end game MMO content revolve around group raids/boss fights, and most raid leaders and/or guild leaders will demand optimized kits from their participants.
What that means is your specialized, balanced, lore friendly character will get tossed aside in favor of any god-like power gaming build that comes along. Basically something like the Paladin of Molag Bal, while considered a joke here, would be a very desirable team pick in an MMO.
