From what I can tell the Talisman on the stairs has completely disappear, it happened (again it's on assumption) when I tried to continue the quest after coming back and I never picked the talisman up and kept moving. Now it doesn't exist so game over.

I hope so, still at this rate it might be better to just start up my next character (I have a light-armored Archer to test out now) I'll probably through Bombs into the mix in the end,

I've played through SoM (I love that game), and I'm not sure that it is really possible to make builds in that game. One playthrough can net you half of the available perks.
There is no customization as far as equipment, either. The weapons you start with are the weapons you end with.

Course you could always impose restrictions like no combat prompts or HUD indicators to help in combat to give yourself more of a challenge so the uruks are actually a threat. I did that and ended up with my arch nemesis: Ashgam Blood Storm
