"All WiP content posted here must be at least 500 words, with the exceptions of Art Group or Tips and Tricks content as well as poems for Tamriel/Wasteland Tales. Anything with less than 500 words will be deleted. Furthermore, all character builds require 750 words and a perk spread of some sort, regardless of whether it is temporary or the final version."

I feel like the minimum requirements for character builds hurt rather than help new character builders. I feel like a more sensible minimum requirement would be 250 words and at the very least a list of perks chosen or a link to a perk calculator. I mean, this is a place for work in progress builds right? With your current rules you're essentially asking people to have, what most novices would consider, a finished product.

The current minimum standard is a daunting requirement for someone brand new to character building. It might explain why Raidriar's work comprises a sizable chunk of your workshop success stories. He's got plenty of experience as a builder so 750 words and a perkspread is a joke for someone like him.

Few novice builders are going to be able to meet that standard, so relax it a bit to give them better access to a friendlier group to help them improve. The CB group suffers when novice builders lack easy access to the workshop. Deleting their work here, rather than helping them accomplishes nothing but discouraging them. Most of the time they're either going to give up, or say "fuck it" and post whatever they have to the CB group. Its better for them to make their mistakes in the workshop than in the CB group, and your current rules deny them that breathing room to make mistakes.

I'm begging you guys to see this from a new builder's perspective. It takes time and practice to meet our standards for character builds.

Let me cover this paragraph by paragraph.

I feel like a more sensible minimum requirement would be 250 words and at the very least a list of perks chosen or a link to a perk calculator.

First of all what do you say to a build with 250 words? Expand on everything... It simply isn't enough to offer feedback on a build. I could judge someones spelling or grammar but I could not offer feedback on improving the content beyond expanding on everything. I don't see the point of allowing content that could not be given feedback as that is the primary reasoning for the Workshop. As for the second but, that is what I mean by Perk Spread of some form. Perk Link, Perk Spread in picture form, Perk Spread in list form, whatever it is. I think we can agree that it's important for a build to have a Perk Spread, I think my wording was simply off. Consider a slight change to that sentence to be made soon.

With your current rules you're essentially asking people to have, what most novices would consider, a finished product.

I agree. But I will counter that 750 words is not a finished product (obviously). Most builds are what 1500 words at least, probably more. I think that hammering in that 750 words is not a complete build is fairly important, sure I can say that but people don't like listening. Honestly disallowing the content (or straight up deleting) throws a stronger message out, lets in sink in easier. I could be convinced to reduce it to 500 but I don't see it as harming the group. Is it harsh, yes it is. I'm not going to deny that, but I do believe that sometimes you need to be harsh.

The current minimum standard is a daunting requirement for someone brand new to character building. It might explain why Raidriar's work comprises a sizable chunk of your workshop success stories. He's got plenty of experience as a builder so 750 words and a perkspread is a joke for someone like him.

Raidriar has 1 Workshop Success Story...so that's completely incorrect. As for experience I cannot disagree, 750 words is a joke to older builders, is it a bad start for newer builders though? In fact 750 seems like a good start.

The CB group suffers when novice builders lack easy access to the workshop. Deleting their work here, rather than helping them accomplishes nothing but discouraging them

As I said above. You cannot help people with next to no content, I can't help them. And can you honestly say that you could so much more than saying. Expand on Everything in really fancy ways. Sure you can say that some stuff needs to be expanded more but the bottom line for anything with <500 words is expand everything and add pictures (more often that not).

Its better for them to make their mistakes in the workshop than in the CB group, and your current rules deny them that breathing room to make mistakes.

Can't disagree that it's better to make mistakes here. I'll lower it to 500 unless Albino disagrees with me. Actually hold that thought...Time for another discussion I think. I'm not going to outright deny it. I can see that the Word Minimum could be harmful but I think completely taking one out can be just as harmful.

How do you work out the synergy of bound weapons? I have a build in mind that revolves around dual bound swords until I can craft daedric swords but its not as intuitive as out of magicka pull out weapon. How do you mange spells with bound weaponry?

Using one bound weapon allows usage of spells in the off hand.  Going dual bound is doable, just a little tougher.  You could hotkey your spells, those automatically go into your OH.  I don't think there is a way to put the bound in your OH unless you open your Favorites, select Bound Sword in your left hand and then cast it.  A little breaking for some people but part of life in Skyrim.

Hey, I'm sorry but I'm not really amazing at this sort of stuff. I only just joined the site, I was wondering how exactly you begin creating a "wip character build" what do you use to actually create a page for your build? (Basically I'm a massive noob and it's best you speak to me as if I was a 5 year old who didn't know the difference between a goose or a swan)

    No worries^^.
First you have to read and understand the Character Building Group Rules. There is everything listed what you need in your build, in order to post it later (successfuly) in the building group.
To get started, read the Guide to Characterbuilding. You can also take inspiration from other builds on this site. To start a new discussion in the workshop, go back to "Workshop Discussions" and scroll down until you see a button called "Add discussion".
It is very important that you title your work properly. Like this:
    WiP Characterbuild: ???
Your build must have a gameplay section, so people know how to play it and a perkspread. Read through some of the builds, if you're having trouble.

You can create your perkspread here and include the link in your build (you can ask later also in the Art Goup Services Request Tread for a perkspread with picture). If you need any help with gameplay mechanics or something else, just ask in your discussion in the workshop or in the Character Building Help Desk .

Im considering making a Series of Interactive story's where the Readers choose what the main character does threw Commands and Polls. Should i put the Storys in the Workshop for the Readers to enter commands and when the chapter is done i post it as a Blog?

  • February 9, 2016

I don't see why not. I'd imagine you still need to have a starting chapter, and then the choices effect the second (and so on) so you could either post them here, or just have people vote in a poll that's connected to the blog itself.

Regardless, I have no problem with you running the first stage through here
