Building for Survival Mode (FO4)

They've yet to cause me trouble, since if I spot any of them it's straight into sneak and VATS headshots. Which is really easy with 12-15 peception and the third perk of sniper. Their robots are a little trickier but it's basically the same tactic.

I'll never play this game on a lower difficulty again, survival is just so awesome

There's a lot of good info in this thread, I think the importance of lone wanderer, strong back, life giver, and armorer have been mentioned. And medic for the clinic. Just wanted to add some of the stuff I noticed.

Even if you only take 3 ranks in agility, sneak is very important. Your early perks are going to give you more survivability and less damage output. While it's already been mentioned that sneak can help you bypass combat if you need to, the double damage sneak attack bonus is a good way to do some extra damage without picking a weapon specialization or adding mods.

I always take 1 rank in hacker and locksmith. Combined with scrounger that one extra container you can now open may just have some ammo you can use when you really need it.

I'm also finding myself adding more level up points to the actual special skills than I did on other difficulties. I guess there is less room for experimenting and fooling around so regardless of how I start I usually end up targeting the same key perks. That means finding bobbleheads and adding to the special stats manually a lot of times. So overall my survivor builds have had less total perks but higher special stats than my other builds. Been working pretty well, although I have yet to head into Quincy or the glowing sea or any of those more difficult areas (or take a build passed level 20. Restartitis for no reason, like I said I end up in a similar place every time)

I think that's a good point about perk investment. Survival sort of forces a more balanced starting spread. It's real hard to have 8 or 9 or two stats now. I'm def investing in endurance and a little in agility.

Yup, every time I played before survival it was all about I want to try such and such perk, so I need 7 here, and this can be 1 because I don't care about it. With survival I won't go lower than 3 or higher than 5 to start, everything is kind of in the middle. Then around level 10 I'll invest in charisma to get local leader or whatever. But yeah, the mindset goes from "this will be fun to try" to "how can I avoid dying?"

Re-formatted the main post with HIGHLY recommended perks. The ones that many people have noted as helpful.

Thanks to everyone so far. I've really enjoyed using this post as a way to feel connected to everyone's play through. Keep sharing and STAY ALIVE...no matter what occurs...I WILL FIND YOU!!!

Also - I took the castle! Piss off Queen :)

Shout out to Ponty for the tip to line her entry way at the water with mines. That worked!

Yeah I'm def doing both, but at some point you have to decide on nuclear family or nuclear option - maybe that's what he meant.

Managed to get a near full set of heavy combat armor off of Captain Bridget, only missing the right arm, took my deep pockets and shadowed off my old armor and slapped them on. Next step is unlocking ballistic weave for an added layer of protection. Used nearly all of my 308 rounds clearing the camp of gunners so I could get to her, then took a critical headshot at her with a 44 revolver, followed up with psychojet and a full clip of righteous authority in her face, haha.

Got to level 55 on my Survival character and finished the main story (went with the Institute allied with the Minutemen). I think my character was just cohesive enough to turn in to a build (unlike my previous one - she was fun, but a little all over the place). So I'll be working on that for the next week or so. Something to do while I wait for Overwatch to come out I guess
