Modern Masters 2017 - Presentation Nominations Thread

Okay let's do this again. :D

Presentation. It's, yeah, the visual component of a build, what we see and how you sell it. Icing on the cake, so to speak. But, it can also be used to comunicate hard concepts and sometimes those concepts get very hard to convey when you are trying to Skyrimize something in crossover builds. Presentation can also means bending the rules with regard to formatting to create something very cool or different. The builds I'm nominating for this category have either bent those formatting rules successfully or they've managed, through their choice of imagery, to really sell the concept of their build extremely well.

First, an honorable mention for a feature that I really liked.

The Valenwood Vampire by Peppo_o'Paccio - scroll down and take a look at the map in this build and tell me that isn't a clever,  clever idea and so useful.

Second, again, I want to qualify, the builds below have so much more to offer than just presentation. Like I said, it's but the icing in otherwise delicious cakes, but I felt that they captured something in their presentation that went above and beyond what is typically done in builds and I enjoyed revisiting them again. Go, and give them likes and plenty of love.

Big trouble in little Morro by Shinjin - So  what can I say, you say you're gonna bring Jack Burton into skyrim, I'm gonna damn well pay attention. Me, a supreme lover of 1980's cheese (Ash William's Evil Dead anyone?). There are huge challenges to bringing such a modern character into Tamriel and yet maintain the spirit of the original character AND the spirit of the game. Shin does this very well with his choice of images and lines from the movie. His ability to render the enemies of the movies into Skyrim npcs was very well done. And it would not have been as effectively done if Shin wasn't such a master of image selection and manipulation. It's not just presenting a build with a homegenous theme, that is relatively easy to do in a standard character build, but to do it in a crossover and make you believe it? That is a challenge, and that is why this build stands out for me.

The Bow-Knight of Auri-El by Plunders-The-Mountains - this builder may get several nods from me, as I really like what he does, but I chose this particular build for presentation because from the first image I know exactly what this build is about. It's gonna use bows, love Auri-El and feature Ordinator, Apocalypse, and Summermyst. You could cut off the rest of the build and only keep the title banner and you've got the build. That says a lot about effective communication in the presentation right there. Cutting off the rest of the build would be a disservice, however, as the rest is just lovely to look at. Clean, simple lines that I like to see with strong sectional divides. The images are also extremely homogenous. Elves with bows. One even looks like my Aelberon of Dusk, so that was a big plus. Very well done.

Heroic Spirit - Caster by Dragonborn2021 - I don't think you can go through a presentation category and NOT nominate Mr. Banner himself. Many builds here have adopted banner formatting, centered images and have benefitted from his banner creation in their own builds. It's a clean format style that communicates the build in a solid way. It's been a format used for a long time in character building. Used because it works. His Karliah build is already nominated, but while that build's presentation is indeed very pretty (dude even used purple for her eyes), there is something different about this one.  A jump in technical skill that I started noticing. I've known Deebs for a very long time and this build's presentation has a new maturity that you see beginnings of in his Karliah build. There is unification of color scheme, font, sharpness, formatting, and some excellent image selection. When we do modern masters 2018, do not be surprised if I mention his He Who Carves Wood in the Image of Gods, because his image presentation in that first build image takes yet another leap in development. Here's hoping he returns to the vault soon, so we can see him continue to grow artistically.

There you have it, my three nods for presentation. Good luck to all of you who are nominated.

Wow, I'm confused after the last few posts.  I don't see anything in the OP by DB that there will be offshoots of this "event" with various categories.  Presentation is not mentioned at all in the OP yet is a major theme down the stretch of comments.  So not sure what to nominate since no clear idea if DB's post is the real deal or this got hijacked and changed somehow and somewhere.

There’s a post in CB where it changed. I think they’re planning to update this post today, but yeah, that’s where the new guidelines are set up.

I'll update the thread soon, but until then, this'll clear up the confusion.

Okay, yes, that thread? That thread is just slightly important reading. Just ever so slightly. I'm going to think about it. Off the top of my head, Baranat's Descendent can probably stay...? And apparently Liss might rather get a Lore nom for Vaermina's Nightmare. I'll think about it when it's not half past 11 at night.

All right people, the thread has been updated as promised. If you have any questions, let me know!

    Okay. Here we go.

To begin - I'd like to formally request my Mage Knight be withdrawn from the Presentation nomination. I'm aware DB isn't around, so... yeah. I think it's a much better fit under Gameplay, don't you?

Okay so I'm not the biggest fan of presentation as a category right now - I suppose I'm of a mind with Liss here, although I would not have put it as politely as she did. I'd probably have said something about gift-wrapped poop. Also importantly - a lot of builds with very strong presentation are worth nomming for other reasons.

Finally... ----, I'm not sure how I feel about winning builds being removed from future categories. On the one hand it's clearly a pretty nice idea since we have a lot of builds and a lot of them are good. On the other hand... ---- on the other hand I hate having to think, okay, this is a build with great presentation, but does it deserve to be nominated for presentation, or should I nominate it for some other category instead? ShinJin's Mara's Might has amazing presentation, but maybe I should drop it a Mods nom instead because it's also a fantastic display of Ordinator Restoration. Peppo o'Paccio's Baranat's Descendant is not the very best presented build, but it hits all the important high atmospheric notes by using ridiculously simple images (screenshots almost all of them) and is a perfect example of how you don't need to be super fancy to convey essential ideas in your build. But, y'know, it's based off a lore book from Morrowind. Maybe it should be in that category instead. (in fact, Baranat's Descendant is quite a gem; it's not outstandingly outstanding in any one category, but somehow comes together as a sum greater than its parts.)

The fact that presentation itself is an icing on what is normally a very good cake makes it harder to nominate things for this category.

---- now I'm a little annoyed. I'm going to go play Skyrim and come back to noms later.

I won't forget to get my noms in. But for now, in case I do forget, I'm going to say...

Actually, hey, Long-Chapper, I know you expressed the idea that Vaermina's Nightmare should be a Lore nomination, but would you consider leaving it under Presentation? I know it's Arkved from Oblivion. But I glanced back through the build and there... isn't that much about him. On the other hand... well. This build hits every high point I'd expect out of the Presentation category. Images fit the build's theme; images add to build atmosphere; images that need to be clear (Read as: perk spread) are clear, the whole build is just a chilling read.

I'll assume for now that the answer is no, as per Liss' stated wishes elsewhere, and quickly nom... The King of the Undead, by Peppo o'Paccio, in addition to the maybe-nom of Vaermina's Nightmare. I'll look for number 3 and number maybe-2 later. If Liss doesn't chime in, assume Vaermina's Nightmare is not nommed.

"gift-wrapped poop", LOL!! I'm sorry to hear that soly, but some of us, especially myself, put the same amount of work into presentation as well as gameplay. So this category is for celebrating those of us who do like to see their work properly presented to the best of our abilities.

I must apologise. It's not my intention to say that presentation is worthless, nor do I want to belittle the amount of work you and others put into presentation. I do actually think that presentation is as important to a build as the other categories. It's just... just... okay, this is hard for me to articulate in words, so please bear with me. I hope it comes across with sense...

The thing is that presentation is the one thing that cannot exist by itself in a build. When I look at a great build, I can, almost without fail, say, look, the presentation in this build is good/great/sublime. But after I say that, I can again point at something else and say, this build has fantastic, well-researched Lore. Or this build's Gameplay is without peer. Or this build is an exemplification of playing the game with Ordinator while perking these trees. Or the build's Roleplay elements are deep and touching. And when I think about what makes a build really great, what I find is that presentation by itself is not enough. That presentation is closer to a catalyst. Presentation makes a good build great and a great build exceptional. But gift-wrapped poop, to use my crude terminology... is still poop.

I guess that's why I'm really struggling with nominations for this category. When I look at a build with good presentation, it's not usually the presentation that jumps out at me. It's what the presentation is conveying. The presentation spotlights what the build does really, really well (gameplay, roleplay, lore or mods, to use your other categories) and in that way draws the reader deeper into the build. Because of that, it's a category that I really struggle to nominate a build for. Because the builds I want to nominate are usually probably better off in other categories from that spotlight. (Liss, if you're curious - to me, Vaermina's Nightmare is selling/spotlighting its roleplay.)

In that sense it feels almost insulting (for me, at least) to nominate a build for presentation. When I nominate a build for presentation, it's almost like saying, "look, this is a great build, but it doesn't have the gameplay, roleplay, lore, or mod showcase to be nominated for one of those. But hey, it looks really nice, so have a consolation prize." ----, it sounds insulting when I say it like that, doesn't it? It's not my intention to be insulting. It just isn't far off from what I feel - that nominating a build for Presentation at this stage is sort of saying that it's not good enough for the other things. Maybe it'd be different if Presentation was the last category, but then it'd actually be much more like a consolation prize so I don't know if this is a good thing.

Ugh, you all probably hate me now. Sorry for that, I guess. I just... I think I needed to get that off my chest. At least now I know why I'm having trouble. The builds are mostly too good for me to want to hand out consolation prizes.

My internet connection is terrible, which is why I’m nominating in separate comments. I didn’t want to lose anything. It just took me 5 minutes to load my second nomination to get the link, case in point. And that second nomination is:

    Cinq amis’ Savos

One of my favorite things to do as I’m wandering Skyrim is to imagine what if: what would Skyrim be like if Ulfric hadn’t been broken by Elenwen? How would the Companions be different if Kodlak weren’t sick?

And now, as explored by Ragin Cajun, what if Savos Aren and his friends hadn’t made that trip into Labyrinthian? Cinq amis’ Savos is an elegantly deep build, and like Big Head, entertaining to read. For different reasons, obviously. But I found myself fully immersed in it, from unused dialogue and bits of lore bringing all the characters to life, to the lovely visuals and great flow of a presentation that’s easy to follow and again, a joy to read.

And, less important to me, but no less well done here, I could see myself playing any of the characters described therein. Gameplay and character construction are explained well, and in a manner that leaves the reader with no doubt this build was played not only with care, but also great enthusiasm by its author.

    Thank you ilani
