Modern Masters 2017 - Presentation Nominations Thread

    Final nomination: The Dullahan.

Such a fun read and a great concept. I love the idea of this empty, “inhuman, unstoppable suit of armor” whose main function is terror and taking mortal souls. I’ve never played an Altmer or a Vampire character, and this build makes me want to do so. It’s beautifully presented and lovely to look at. Character construction is clever and cohesive: race and stone and attributes are well selected, and skills and perks make sense.

And as with my previous two nominations, I can see the care and enthusiasm and love for the game evident in Librari the Wizard’s description of playthrough and roleplay and inspiration for the character’s creation in the first place.

Damnit, you all keep taking builds I wanted to nominate. Back to the drawing board for nomination three then. Unless I decide to repeat, I do tend to do that.

Alright, I finally have it, my last nod. By the way, all the nods, so far, spot on.  You all keep taking ones I was thinking of. Also, blushing a bit at Outsider and Vaermina's nightmare. It's a nice feeling to see your work being appreciated, so thank you.

All this made me think about something, which then served as the source of inspiration behind my final nomination.

The Pure Alchemist. I don't think we'd take the chances we do now with smaller scale builds if Deebs didn't start with this first build in his Pure Skills Series. Sure, we've had small scale build events in the past, but they were more rare. Now, a level 20 or less build is pretty common, flash events too. And many of these builds can be just as richly detailed as their larger counterparts, while offering a player who doesn't want to commit to a level 50 playthrough something very entertaining.

There were several starts to fine series last year. Pestilence's Horseman of the apocolypse series immediately pop into my mind, but the Pure Skills Series present some very interesting challenges. And he didn't start this build with an easy skill, no, he went right in with a crafting skill, right for the jugular, so to speak. Alchemy.

The image of a tiny Bosmer girl running around Skyrim poisoning people with a whack from a warhammer brought a huge smile to my face when I first read the build. But, what kept me intrigued was the excellent use of the primary skill and the roleplay behind it. I especially enjoyed the rationale for the Purity perk and the roleplay of not purchasing from other alchemists. It's a modded build, but at the same time, this build, with some minor tweaks, can be played on pure Vanilla as well.

The point is that sometimes a build comes along that serves as a springboard for other builders and there have been at least 4 builds that have been made precisely because they were inspired by the ideas at the root of this build. Taking a single skill and developing a viable playstyle that utilizes that one perked skill. And, to me, that is something that makes the build iconic in many ways.

Oh, wow, @Lissette, I didn’t know that. Thanks for pointing that out. It must feel really cool to create something that’s an inspiration for others. Having just recently come on the scene, I don’t know many of the stories behind the builds, so I’ve enjoyed reading everyone else’s impressions almost as much as reading through the builds themselves.

Yes, it's great when builds inspire others.

As per Noodles' update thread, I respectfully decline the nominations of  my builds in the Presentation category, though again, I cannot emphasize how appreciative that my work was in people's thoughts. While presentation is a component of my work, as it should be with all builds, I think there are better categories that summarize who I am as a builder, especially Lore. However, it is totally at Soly and Amo's discretion if they would like to resubmit their nominations of my work for the lore category, or whatever category they think fits what I do based on their evaluation of my work. And if they choose not to, that is up to them, I still thank them for their prior submissions. Means a lot.

Likewise, I would also like to withdraw my three nominations at this time.

Soly's Mage Knight, Shin's Mara's Might, and Deebs' The Pure Alchemist. While I still maintain that these are my three favorite builds, or rather the three I could narrow it down to after much difficulty, from 2017, having read all 85 of them, and while their presentation is excellent, presentation is not the reason why I ulitimately nominated these builds.  I feel that they would better reflect how I feel about them if they were in in different categories.

However, so you do not find the Presentation category suddenly wanting for builds, I will also offer up three builds that I think do embody Presentation for 2017. I already have three in mind. I'll post them after my meetings tomorrow.

Thank you Lis! And I just want to clarify this. If someone else were to further nominate your same builds in Presentation, I will reject them. You don't have to come back here again and say you don't want them nominated.

Well, I don’t think when anyone was nominating these builds, Noodles, they were thinking that Presentation was all that these builds were about, you know? Deebs asked us to nominate and justify what we thought were the very best of 2017, so while all the builds nominated so far clearly have very good presentation, that’s a hallmark of a good build in general, I think that the builds I nominated are deeper builds than just that. They are cake. Presentation is the icing on the cake, but I nominated delicious cake that also happened to feature a yummy coating of frosting. True Substance. And I would hope others feel the same. Honestly? I don’t give a flying shit about my builds. My builds can go jump a lake, but I know how hard others worked in 2017. And since you saw that compendium, I can only imagine you’ve drawn a similar conclusion.

For the second or third time, Lis, anyone who nominated is free to remove or change their nominations should they consider the builds more fitting of another category. There is plenty of time to do that until August 24-th. If a build is nominated but does not win in the Presentation poll, it can be further nominated in the remaining categories as long as it fits, of course.

Oh, I totally understood you the first time. I was just thinking aloud about the process we went through when nominating these builds, what we were thinking when the request was made.
