An Argument for 'Drain Vitality'

I have been experimenting with Dragons and Stamina as well.  A long standing rumour has been that dragons use stamina to fly and they land because they run out (or something along those lines).  I spent a few hours trying different methods of eliminating the stamina of a dragon (using above technique mainly) and was not able to stop a dragon from taking off and flying, even at the point I knew for an absolute fact it had no stamina (using Console to verify).

Alas, the best us Alchemists can do to ground dragons is to fully remove their Magicka and force them to land to fight with melee...it isn't 100% but it does seem to be very effective.  They will occasionally still take off and fly but it is always for a short time.

So it's basically putting them into a zero magicka state that makes them land because it's their only option for damaging you...that's interesting. Would lightning help to drop them low combined with DV?

How about the Staff of Magnus? I've no idea what a dragons magicka reserve even is but that staff could probably make a good dent??

Another option would be vampiric drain (boosted by BOTA), could basically use that to hold a dragon down imbetween shouts of DV...

A character build by Adrik makes heavy use of the 'Staff of Magnus' and on that post there was a brief discussion about the staff where I mentioned that I used it on my mage character and called it my "Dragon $#%@ stick" (Copywrite pending).

The staff drains the dragon's magicka down to zero at which point it will in fact land to engage with melee.  This can be very effective especially if you have a melee summon for it to fight with while you continue to use range attacks.  The issue with this method, mainly, are two fold:

    • The Staff has a charge and if you are fighting a stronger dragon you will likely burn through most/all of the charge keeping it's magic drained.  The true downside of this is that the staff has a gigantic Magicka pool of 5000 meaning for every higher level dragon you fight you will usually have to use an entire Grand Soulgem to refill it (3000 magicka) and occasionally an additional gem.
    • The Staff acts as a constant DOT to Magicka (and then to health) and while it has an amazing range, it doesn't stop regen so if you are not able to keep your staff focused on it then it will begin to recharge it's magicka.  This isn't a huge issue but it is something to note.

Another very useful staff might be the 'Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson' which UESP states does 50 damage per shot to magicka and only has a charge of 1000 magicka so wouldn't take anything more than a Common gem to completely refill.  I don't know if the staff actually does 50 magicka damage but if it does it might be a better choice.  This staff is a lightning spell BTW so to answer your other question...yes, lightning spells will work as well.

*Note: Keep in mind those staves will have their damage reduced by the difficulty level whereas ravage magicka poisons don't

One issue with Damage regen poisons is that I believe their magnitude is lowered by difficulty setting.  On Adept a damage regeneration poison stops regen by 100% for 75 seconds but I think on Master that is lowered to -50% for 75 seconds.  I'm not 100% certain of this but I did try this method a while back and noticed damage regen poisons didn't stop dragons from shouting (which really pissed me off).

If you use DV then you don't really need the damage regen so straight up 'damage magicka' and 'lingering damage magicka' can also be very effective.

The above mentioned use of DV for stamina damage accomplishes the same goal as SlowTime, your enemy moves slow and you can kite them (with ranger perk).  Slow Time is one of the absolute best shouts in the game but I always found it too easy ("win button") so I prefer to use my method which, in effect, does the same thing except it's at a faster pace.

I suppose it's a more challenging version of 'Slow Time' since your enemies still have a chance of catching you.

    P.S.

Stability + DragonAspect + Necromage Vampire = complete joke but fun as hell!

It's actually somewhat humourous to see.  A dragon will still make the shout sound then suddenly stop and just stand there like a goofball.  All shouts use magicka from my experience.

I've always wanted to find a good use for Jyrik's staff.  It's base of 1000 Magicka is quite appealing, with the 'Soul Squeezer' perk you can completely refill it using only a Lesser gem.
