Hello and I'm here again to give some Tips and Tricks from my travels in Skyrim. I have first searched the group for any posts related to this topic but nothing comes up.
On Certain Staves
I love staves for some reason, I like the idea of an item that can conjure up magick and hit stuff. I like exploring concepts where "staves" actually amplify magical power or have powers of their own where a mage can course his magic through the staff to achieve an effect. Naturally I have had my brush with most of the staves found in Skyrim and here I present my interesting findings on them.
Currently I will only feature 2 staves and will just list all the peculiar things I found out about them. If ever I feel like it, I might make this topic more of a compilation on staves and their peculiarities but that remains to be seen.
#01 The Staff of Jyrick Gaulderson
One of my most favorite staff in-game after I discovered some pretty awesome stuff I previously did not notice about it. Looking at some builds, none of what I saw featured the effects of staff discovered in my "Enchanter-esque" (akin to the Enchanter class in Log Horizon) playthough.
#02 The Skull of Corruption
One of the more good looking (if not creepy) staves out there. My only regret is I have to kill Erandur to get it.
That's it for now folks! I hope this little post will help inspire people to do more builds around these staves. I know I will haha.

Isn't the Staff of Jyrik bugged though? I always thought for some reason it tried to tag it as an attack (so staff would try and attack an enemy by increasing their Magicka Regen, on top of the health and magicka damage, that's why you get the "Enemy resisted increase magicka regen" or whatever the message was).
Well, I did just check UESP and it says
Equipping the Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson is also meant to apply Jyrik's Blessing, which increases Magicka and Magicka regeneration. However the script to apply the effect is not actually attached to the item.
So regardless it doesn't work as intended, but it's still a badass staff.
I think the fact that the Skull of Corruption is one of the msot powerful AoE Staves is also good to mention (I say second most powerful, you could probably try and convince me otherwise), but the most powerful staff ever is the Staff of Chain Lightning, because unlike most (if not all) staves it has a stagger effect, meaning when you hit an enemy, it kind of acts a little bit like you've got the Impact perk...
Cool topic Yvandil, definitely something that more people should keep in mind (staves are badass)

Oh I didnt know about that bug :o I would love to test it although I dont know how to check a target's Magicka Regen.
As for Jyrick's Blessing, I did get an increase in Magicka on Vanilla (PC) Maybe there's a difference in versions and platforms.
Ahh the Staff of Chain Lightning. It's so OP I don't even want to use it anymore haha. I do hope there's a place where 1 can be found at any level.
Thanks! DB :) WE need to make more staff builds +_+

Do you have the unofficial patches? Because that fixes it, but I suppose it could just be console players getting screwed over again.
You know, your absolutely right, we do need some more staff builds don't we.

Mercurias said: Another point you might be interested in when it comes to staves is that 100% Magic Absorb in the vanilla game makes summons impossible to cast, sending the Magicka that would have gone into the spell to your Magicka bar. There have been a couple of builds which used that to turn staves like the Sanguine Rose into magical batteries for their spells. Note that the staves do consume a charge, but it goes to the player rather than casting a spell. Halldir's Staff is an odd duck worth mentioning. It has both a Calm effect as well as a whopping 60 second Soul Trap. It's very useful for enchanters who don't want to dump perks into Conjuration, and the Calm effect is great for lower level assassins to get a second Sneak Attack in on affected enemies.
I'll take note of this and hopefully I get to making this topic a pretty good resource on how staffs work Thanks!

I did have the unofficial patches but I switched to a pure vanilla game a while ago. It still worked. I guess we have to get people testing this out again.
Indeed indeed more staff builds!

Do the novice-expert perks affect their respective staffs, halving the charge reduction per cast?
I'm also a fan of staves in Skyrim, you should definitely make a little list of guaranteed locations for certain staves, like how you can get 4 easily in Shalidor's Maze.

Nah, just increasing the skill (so level 5 might give you 1 more cast, while 100 might give you 40), it'd be nice if you could though and I think some mods change it.

From what I recall reading, doesn't 100% Fortification from enchants in the school associated with the staff give it infinite casts when used? I know they give infinite uses for weapons enchanted for Destruction.
This is a good place to post the Squib build for any who haven't seen it. The Squib trains magic, but only uses it through scrolls, staves, and enchanted weapons.
