Debate: Marginalized Skills

I liked Morrowinds system as well, I remember running a pure assassin/thief type character and having a blast disarming and picking locks...

But the fact that you could just create a 1 - 100 'open' spell early in the game with a very reasonable chance to cast did technically break the need for skill...

I guess that's where a players ability to RP is called into question though.

Canon: Mason wishes to see a probe, preferably not near his rectal cavity

I've seen many times how people overlook Alchemy labeling it too tedious, not powerful enough etc. Luckily, this tendency decreased with time

I agree with Lockpicking. Sure, it can save your time when picking locks, but since the time stops when you attempt to pick a lock, it loses its gameplay value for me. I don't feel like I'm wasting time when picking locks, I actually enjoy the challenge each lock provides. Thus I think that Lockpicking skill is rightfully marginalized. A shame, since all it would take to make the skill awesome is to make lockpicking minigame take place in real time.

There were a lot of redundancies built into Morrowind's system, and to some extent Oblivion's too.  I actually really like that approach, since it makes for multiple playthroughs with different characters exploring different skills.

With Skyrim, there are several effects that are *only* available in one specific way.  Want to pick locks?  We have the Lockpicking skill, so no need for a spell or scroll.  Want to make a foe weak to fire magic?  We have that as a poison, so there's no need for an enchantment or spell effect.  Want to command NPCs to fight for you?  That's a shout; no need for an Illusion Command spell then.

It's honestly as though the developers thought people were only going to do one playthrough.  You can also see this in the way they push you into the various guild quests just by pursuing the main quest.

Anyway, I'm off on a tangent.

But yeah, the redundancies are there in MW much more than in Skyrim.  I remember being a little disconcerted when I discovered Enchanting in Morrowind.  That skill makes *spellcasting* redundant!  And yet, I love the freedom it provides and the ingenuity it rewards.

Sorry I'm a bit late to the party, guys. The biggest one for me is Speech -- its biggest selling points are all available through other means:

    1. Selling stolen goods --> Use TG fences.
    2. Persuasion --> Use the Amulet of Articulation to pass ANY speech check. (Also generally renders Intimidation irrelevant.)
    3. Allure, Haggling, Master Trader, Investor --> Does anyone actually struggle for money in the mid-game, let alone end-game?

The only useful perk in the tree is Merchant, and even that has relatively useless utility. It's great for dumping off crafted items in exchange for skill training, but that's about it.

Now, how could Speech be improved?

First off, instead of Haggling 1-5, I'd like to see tiered perks that make speech checks easier. Maybe 5% lower level each time. So with 5/5, a check that normally requires 80 speech would only require 60 speech (80 * (1 - 25%)).

Second, have a few more opportunities for speech checks to actually alter the game. Bypass certain sections of quests (especially combat-intensive ones that a speech-based character might not be adept with). Procure better rewards. Unlock alternative endings. Things that would force players to choose Speech at least once if they're interested in seeing all the game has to offer. And a few rewards that would keep players coming back to the skill depending on their build's needs.

Last, and most important: Not tying the Speech skill to Shouts was one of the biggest mistakes BGS made with Skyrim. That was such an obvious thing to do; every perk overhaul can agree with me here. Give a perk to make Shouts last longer, a perk to augment their magnitude, a perk to reduce cooldown ... Maybe even an endgame perk where each shout gets a separate cooldown, allowing players to chain Shouts together without needing 100% Fortify Shouts. Shouts wouldn't need to dominate the perk tree, but just something like 3-5 perks would make such a drastic difference to the skill's usefulness. How many people here can say that they WOULDN'T use Speech significantly more frequently if it had Shout-based perks?

So this is kind of an older(ish) topic, but I wanted to put my thoughts in as well. What about Bend Will? People use it for riding dragons (which was done a bit disappointingly imo, but I digress), but a lot of people forget that using the 2-word skill will turn any NPC into an ally for 30 seconds. It seems to me that this could open up some interesting roleplay possibilities. You're so good with words that you actually convince the enemy to fight for your side for a little while! What if you want to play a Final Fantasy Tactics style Mediator? THIS FITS RIGHT IN.

Damn, I might now have to make a build based on the FFT Mediator and use this.

The discussion was about marginalized skills, not shouts, but still, you bring up a good point. While Bend Will  isn't completely ignored (both Ponty's Prodigy and Matt Feeney's Way-Maker use Bend Will for its mass enslavement capabilities), you'd think that it'd get more hype considering how powerful a tool it can be.

Do you want to get all the gear in Skyrim? the Misdirection and Perfect Touch perks can be useful to gain equipped gear. #pickpocket For lockpicking, it can be useful to scavenge and loot dungeons. If your an explorer, scavenger or looter. If your a criminal you can get out of trouble with speech and get more coin from selling items in speech
