Aslamyr walked quietly down the hall.  His practiced step and the soft padding of his cloth boots kept his step quiet, but still his host knew he was coming.  It was hard to hide the power that his body emanated.  He guided his hands through the gentle movements that would channel his power into protective wards.  Once that was complete, he drew the energy of a spell into his left hand before hiding it behind his back.  He returned to his steady walk and entered the ornate chamber that lay at the end.

“Aslamyr,” the deep voice of the Thalmor agent sitting upon the ornate chair across from him, sought to compel him to a state of fear.  “What did you find?”

“The crypt was devoid of the power you sought, Devenick,” he replied, his own melodic voice without an ounce of fear.

“You lie!” the Thalmor screamed as he rose from his chair.

“Fair enough, but I’ve lived in the shadow of the Thalmor for long enough,” he answered with a cocky grin.

The Thalmor, in his rage, charged at the younger elven spellblade.  Aslamyr directed the energies of his spell at a spot in front of him on the ground before speaking a single word, “Feim.”  Just as the Thalmor stepped on the glowing rune on the ground, Aslamyr’s body became little more than a cloud of mist, and the lightning that erupted from his rune ripped through the Thalmor and passed harmlessly through his mist shrouded form.  All that energy and still the Thalmor clung to life enough to attempt to heal himself.

“None of that now, Devenick,” Aslamyr said gently, as he drew his blade.  Charging the Thalmor agent in front of him, his blade ripped through the ethereal and took the last of the elf’s lifeforce from him.

    Aetherblade

The goal with this build was to create a character that was graceful and powerful at the same time.  I wanted to utilize a different element than the normal fire and I wanted to utilize the Lightning Rune spell in particular.  This tactic coupled with the Become Ethereal shout, make for an impressive combination.  This is a level 50 build, so it gives the player plenty of room to customize it to their flavor.

    Contains DLC content!!!

    Race: Altmer

Stone:  Lover for leveling then progress to Lord for damage resistance or Atronach for magicka absorption.  If you get the Aetherial Crown you can have both!

    Major Skills

One Handed:  The Aetherblade has learned to integrate the graceful art of the sword into his spell casting allowing him to imbue his sword with the same chaotic energy that flows through him.

Destruction: From a young age the Aetherblade was trained by the Thalmor in the use of the primal energy of lightning.  This skill allows him to wreak havoc on his foes and to enshroud himself with a protective cloak of lightning.

Alteration: Mage's robes don't offer much in the way of protection, but the Alteration tree allows the Aetherblade to wrap his body in energy as strong as ebony.  It also grants him protection from the spells of his foes.

    Minor Skills

Restoration: Even the Aetherblade finds the odds too great at times, and has gained partial training in the art of healing.

Enchanting:  The enchantments of the human mages of Skyrim are feeble compared to the destructive force that a true Highborn can imbue in arms and armor.

Smithing: The Thalmor, always saying Elven this and Elven that, look to much to their Elven weapons and armor.  Understanding that few substances are harder than the ebony of the spell that he protects himself with, the Aetherblade trains extensively in the art of Smithing in order to create his own ebony weapons.

    Level 25 Build

One Handed: Armsman 3/5, Bladesman 2/3, Fighting Stance

Alteration: Novice, Apprentice, Dual Casting, Mage Armor 1/3, Magic Resistance 1/3Destruction: Novice, Apprentice, Dual Casting, Impact, Augmented Shock 1/2

    Restoration: Novice, Apprentice, Regeneration

    Smithing: Steel, Dwarven

    Enchanting: Enchanter 2/5, Fire Enchanter

    Level 50 Build

One Handed: Armsman 4/5, Bladesman 3/3

Destruction: Adept, Augmented Shock 2/2, Disintegrate

Alteration: Mage Armor 3/3, Magic Resistance 2/3, Adept, Expert, Stability, Atronach

    Restoration: Adept, Recovery 2/2

    Smithing: Orcish, Ebony

Enchanting: Enchanter 5/5, Frost Enchanter, Storm Enchanter, Insightful Enchanter, Corpus Enchanter, Extra Effect

    Roleplaying Rules

    Despise the Thalmor

    Aid the Stormcloaks

    Join Winterhold

Every Black Book quest!!! This guy seeks knowledge and power at every turn!

    Everything else is fairgame.

    Equipment

Mageshard: Ebony Sword with Lightning and Soul Trap

Aethershock:  Ebony Sword with Lightning and Paralyze

Clothing and Accessories: For robes, I highly recommend to start by grabbing the Hooded Thalmor Robes (Fortify Destruction 12 pts) at the Talos Shrine outside of Helgen or the Cultist Robes (Foritify Magicka Regen 75 pts) from the Dragonborn DLC.  Then complete the Aetherium quests for a chance at Taron Dreth's Robes (Fortify Destruction 15 pts and Regen Magicka 75 pts).  The Televani Robes (Magicka Regen 125 pts) are a great option as well.

For a headpiece I suggest any circlet or hood that further fortifies our destruction or magicka abilities, otherwise grab the Aetherial Crown allowing you to take two standing stone abilities.

On your gloves I recommend the enchantments of Fortify One-handed and Magicka Regen.  For the boots I suggest Fortify One-handed and Stamina/Stamina Regen.

Lastly for jewelry I suggest a couple of options.  First for the ring you can always use Ring of Erudite (Fortify Magicka 100 pts and Fortify Magicka Regen 2 pts) and Savos Aren's Amulet (Fortify Magicka 50 pts) or self-crafted Fortify One-handed and Fortify Magicka amulet and ring.

    Spells and Abilities

Key Spells:  Close Wounds, Heal Other, Ebonyflesh, Spark, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Cloak, Chain Lightning

Key Powers:  Mora's Boon (Fully restore Health, Magicka and Stamina 1x per day), Secret of Strength (Power attacks cost no Stamina 1x per day), Bones of the Earth (ignore 80% damage, 30 secs, 1x per day)

Key Abilities:  I highly suggest either Companions Insight (if fighting with allies) to avoid damaging them, or Scholar's Insight if you go it alone.  SI fits the character theme better for the recluse wizard thirsting knowledge.

    Shouts

Become EtherealThe hinge for our defense.  A well timed Ethereal shout allows us to dodge the blows of our enemies.  Combine with the Eternal Spirit ability to gain health regen while ethereal.  Additionally, have a lightning cloak on before use and you continue to damage your enemies while remaining invulnerable to them!

Dragon Aspect: Once per day you gain 125 armor rating, your Become Ethereal shout recharges 20% faster and you summon an ancient Dragonborn if your health drops below 50%!

    Combat

Your entire combat theme is about utilizing Become Ethereal to lure your enemy into your runes, whilst making yourself invunerable for enough time to sneak in a power attack and another rune.  That doesn't mean that you can swear off straight forward sword attacks.  Combining Mason's brilliant technique of

And though we don't take any dual-wielding perks, nothing stops you from wielding both of your swords while going on the offensive.utilizing Shock Enchanter, Augmented Shock 2 and a Shock enchanted sword, you can hammer out some massive sword attacks.

Cloaks will also be a great offensive tool.  I suggest either the Lightning Cloak or Whirlwind Cloak.  Lightning Cloak allows us to increase our DPS, while Whirlwind Cloak gives us the chance to keep multiple attackers at bay while we focus our attacks on one enemy.

Additionally, our training in Alteration allows us to cast paralysis and mass paralysis combined with all three words of Become Ethereal to stop our enemies.  You could also use the Ash Rune or Ash Shell spells to hinder them.

    Enjoy!

So, might have overshot it trying to do the skills from 25 to 50 so let me know if anything looks off.

Thanks in advance for the help and advice guys!

This seems even more similar to my rogue Altmer build than Flamedancer.  I've enjoyed using shock runes as well, although I haven't gotten the Ethereal shout yet.

  • May 7, 2012

Well your build inspired it!  I kept thinking about how much I wanted to use shock spells and then I found that picture online and couldn't stop myself.  I had intended him to start as a thief and then RP into inadvertantly gaining his power of the arcane, but I couldn't fill up a level 81 build so I cut the sneak and pickpocket out and just went for an arcane warrior.  Hope it doesn't seem to pretentious to do my own version...

Hey there! I've read both of your builds so far and rather enjoy them. The builds are nice but my favorite part is the story. Nicely written and fun to read. It really gives me a feel of how the character should be played. However, I feel that the actual build part is gone into very lightly. I'd love for you to give us a bit more. If you did you'd definitely get a 'like' from me! Keep it up

Guys, we do have a backstory group you know? lol

This one gets a like from me, because its actually very very close to my current build so i know how viable it is.

You missed out several really important points which i'm going to keep quiet on for now, but the concept itself is alot of fun!

    Nice!

Good to see someone finally making use of Become Ethereal; it's a surprisingly underrated shout, I've used it quite a bit on my Arcane Bladesman!

  • May 8, 2012

No, it's no problem. You wrote a better story, anyway!

  • May 8, 2012

I agree with Ponty. Become Ethereal is an amazing shout, even if it ends the moment you do something. I like the concept of a rogue High Elf against the Thalmor, for it is quite similar to one of my first characters.

Interesting RP possibilities, shock-based spellblade (my favorite element), cool Aethershock Ability is cool, and a simple, open-ended build. This has my like.

I just never seem to be able to find it

Maybe I should look it up...
