    The High Rock Ranger

The High Rock Rangers are a small organization found in Daggerfall. They serve the king and are only heard of in stories and tales. The group has 60 members total, once one has resigned or is killed another is recruited to fill his or her place. The Rangers are masters of unseen movement. Their bow skills cannot be beaten. And if you find yourself at the end of one of their blades, then say your prayers because you won't be around much longer.

The Rangers are often noticed by their famous cowls, which they are almost always wearing. Rangers are expert trackers, woodsmen, and are very persuasive in all situations.

Rangers usually come from orphanages and do not have families, they usually live a hard life at a young age, sneaking around stealing food to survive, talking their way out of bad situations, and if that fails, fleeing from those situations. At a young age the Ranger council picks out certain children to keep an eye on. And once they reach the age of 15 and are ready to become apprentices in whatever profession they are chose for, the council sends a member to recruit them.

Rangers are the deadliest warriors in all of Tamriel. They fight with lightning fast speed and follow a code that allows them to have some kind of consistency with their missions. They are run by a council of 9 members, these members are just as skilled as the others but are more respected, and control the decisions and jobs.

Rangers are deadly tactical fighters, who use strategy to fool and out think their opponents and then strike like a cobra with a single killing blow. They never miss a shot and they are guaranteed the best for any job, no matter what they are up against.

Rangers are hired for any job that does justice in Tamriel, and can even do dirty jobs such as assassinations as long as they are justified and are not for the wrong reasoning.

    Race:

    • Breton- No this is not just another sneak archer build, this build uses different skills and has a decent amount of role-playing required in aorder to play this build. The race Breton is necessary because the Ranger's originate from High Rock although they stretch out to other provinces.

    Stone:

    • The Thief Stone followed by the Lord Stone in later levels. The thief stone will allow your primary skills to level up quickly, where the lord stone will help you remain protected against high level enemies once you reach a higher level.

Stat Spread: Magicka/Health/Stamina 1/2/2 Magicka plays a part in this build but is only necessary until you get your total magicka to 250. From then on your stat spread should be 0/2/2 The High Rock Ranger is able to quickly dodge his opponents strikes and can run to a vantage point when he is outnumbered before his foes are barely in sight.

Apparel: Low level- Gloves, Leather Boots, Cowl, and Fur or Leather Armor. Higher level- Thieves Guild Master Gloves, Thieves Guild Master Boots, Shrouded Cowl, and Nightingale Armor or Linwe/Blackguard Armor.

    • The later armor is fairly time consuming to collect, the outcome and bonuses are quite worth it. If you want to be a Ranger gone rogue, you can join the Dark Brotherhood and eventually get the ancient shrouded cowl for the extra archery bonus. Or you can do the quest "Destroy the Dark Brotherhood" and get the cowl that way. I recommend getting the More Craftables mod to let you make your own armor and enchant it as you wish so you can get more archery bonuses.

Weapons: Best sword you can find, two of the best daggers available, and the Zephyr Bow

    • The Zephyr bow can be obtained from the beginning of the quest "Lost to the Ages" and its extra 30% firing speed bonus is unbeatable when taking out large groups of enemies rapidly. As for a sword/daggers, use the best sword/daggers you can find preferably with a fire enchantment so you can then switch to your bow and do bonus damage.

    Shouts: Slow Time, Unrelenting Force

    • Slow time simply slows down the time allowing you to dodge hits you’re your enemy and fire several shots with your bow before the enemy can move. Unrelenting force can help to weaken and slow down advancing enemies giving you somewhat of crowd control.

    Major Skills

Archery: Your bow is your best friend, it is what protects you in battle, and it allows you to kill your enemies with amazing speed and precision. This is your main weapon, and your main skill. This should be leveled up the most.

Sneak: Sneak allows you to get into position to deal with your enemies, or if you don’t feel like a fight, to sneak right past them. While sneak is important, it does not restrict you to only sneak attacks, use it as the situation requires.

Speech: Speech allows you to talk your way out of sticky situations. Got caught by the guards doing something that will help them out more than they will ever understand? No problem, speech allows you to persuade all types of people and get better prices for items like arrows which are essential.

    Minor Skills

One-Handed: One-Handed weapons are a last resort, they are to be used when your enemies greatly outnumber you and you cannot dispatch of them quickly enough. Dual wield weapons are a common choice for stealth builds but I believe with dual wield weapons, there is too much offense and very little defense and in a situation with multiple enemies, you need a balance of both. Use a sword or a dagger and block oncoming attacks to protect you. Then swiftly strike and deliver several lethal blows.

Enchanting: Enchanting is a very important aspect of this build if you are the type of person that enjoys catching people on fire, and I mean really... Who doesn't. But it is not as important as the others. No high-level enchantments are needed here, something as simple as 10pts. of fire damage will do. Simply setting your opponents on fire then attacking them will cause extra damage that can help in just about every situation. Though if you are going to have an elemental enchantment, I suggest having an enchanted and non-enchanted weapon varying on the stealth situation.

Light Armor: This is pretty basic for just about any stealth based character, this is your main armor type besides basic clothing, and should be used as you see fit. It will help you sneak due to less clankiness in the armor and although you will normally avoid direct combat, if you do find yourself in a pickle you should be able to survive.

Restoration: Not all builds use this as a skill, but this one does. Restoration is used when you or your companion are in a fight and have a lack of potions, or for after a fight to quickly heal up. Restoration can often be a life saver in many situations since rangers are usually independent and lack certain potions unless created by yourself.

Destruction: Destruction spells are pretty important in this build in order to complete it. Start off a fight with an extra damage sneak attack then use a spell to catch your foe on fire and deal extra damage, or freeze them and slow them down to fire off several shots. Rangers use destruction magic to add combos to their basic weapons. Can be used with enchanted weapons for devastating affects at later levels.

    Perk Spread

    Special Combos

    Tri-Shot

    Requires: Slow Time+Quickshot

Allows the ranger to unleash a hail of arrows in rapid succession, useful for taking out large groups, or for doing a lot of damage to a single opponent.

    Fire Arrow

    Requires: Fire Enchanted Bow+Firebolt/Flames+Steady Hand

Allows you to deal a massive amount of damage to a single enemy, use firebolt/flames and catch them on fire then slow time with steady hand and fire a flaming arrow onto the already burning enemy.

    Shadow Strike

    Requires: Silent Roll+Sword/Dagger+ Slow Time

The rangers possess the skill to sneak up on an enemy and strike them for extra damage, the quickly roll out of the way and slow time then strike again after there foe has attempted a hit.

    Splinter Arrow

    Requires: Long Bow/Zephyr Bow+Overdraw 5/5+ Powershot+ Quickshot

The speed of the long bow is unmatched, being able to do fair damage with the long bow, stagger and slow your opponents, and do it all with lightning fast speed is excellent for taking out small groups of enemies or wounding large groups of them.

    Strategy

    Secret Chaos

Sneaking up on an enemy and getting a sneak bonus on them is all well and good. It does bonus damage and can allow you to get a couple of shots off before they reach you, but this does not work well with medium to large sized groups of enemies. The answer is chaos.

Instead of just sneaking up and getting a simple bonus, the rangers are talented in all forms of fighting including magic. They are able to sneak up to their enemy, set them all on fire, then unleash a hail of arrows their way doing far more damage than a simple sneak attack. This will allow you to kill of enemies before they can stand and burn the others while dealing with other problems.

    The Contracts

Rangers have contacts across all of Tamriel, no matter what area they end up in, they always have someone to contact to assist them. Rangers can call upon the assistance of a companion and send them into battle while they sneak around and get what they need. The temporary companion acts as a distraction while the rangers get the real job done. Or if you want to kill the enemies yourself, while their distracted by your follower, move up behind them and attack creating massive confusion.

    Open Area Combat

Most simple hunters or archers are caught off guard when they find themselves out in open combat with no protection from their comrades. Rangers know that with their light armor even they cannot take out vast numbers of enemies, so they say "You can not kill, what you can not catch". Meaning if they run or flee from the seen and disappear into the surrounding country, then they can not be killed and can live to fight another day.

    Combat Near Civilization

When fighting near cities or towns that have guards, rangers are not afraid to lure their enemies into a trap. Rangers have the skills to trick their foes into actually following them to settlements where guards can move into arrest or kill them. This allows rangers to balance the fight in confrontations where they are outnumbered, or can allow them to regenerate their health.

    Role-Play

Role-play is the absolute most important part of this entire build. It is the bow on the present that really completes it and makes it not just another stealth archer build. The role-play section IS optional but is also highly recommended since that is what makes it different and unique.

Rangers have a very high sense of self esteem, they do not allow themselves to be intimidated in any situation. They prefer to avoid brawls since it draws unwanted attention to them but will fight if the situation proves necessary. Honor is very important to a ranger, they will always help out those in need as long as they are good people. They seek out to cleanse the world of everything evil, including necromancers, bandits, dragons, and much more.

The rangers best and usually only friends, are their horses. Rangers and their horses form a special bond that nobody can ever understand. They have a true understanding of each others emotions, thoughts, and physical feelings. Rangers never go anywhere without their horses so therefore no fast travel, you must use your horse unless you feel like you must fast travel then try to avoid it at least. Rangers always name their horses so naming your horses would be necessary.

Rangers are well respected in the land of Tamriel, therefore should treat others with even more respect as long as they deserve it. Even your enemies deserve a kind of respect which can allow you to get inside their head and fool them. Rangers are noble warriors and should act like one. Honor the dead, don't pickup bodies and throw them off cliffs for fun. Leave the bodies in their place or hide them if necessary.

Some basic role-play tips that make the playing more interesting and immersive are, take showers/baths, find a fresh water source such as a waterfall and take off your clothes then stand under it for 5 seconds. Don't fast travel, now while it may sound stupid, it actually adds a surprisingly large amount of immersion to the game. It's something about living every moment through your characters eyes. And lastly, a back story. Back stories are probably the most fun and one of the most important parts of role-playing. Giving your character a back story makes them so much more special, every characters is different and it can be as in depth or not in depth as you want it to be. Now for this build a back story where you lose your parents or you are lost fits well. Anything with an unfortunate background will do just fine.

    Backstory

If you are getting stuck on the back story part or want an idea of what I used here is an example. You were born in a small town inside of High Rock just outside of Daggerfall. 2 years after you were born, a bandit camp move in close to the town. Your village tried to send word to Daggerfall to request assistance but the roads were blocked. One night they attacked, but these were no simple bandits, they were werewolves. They attacked the town and your father told you and your mother to run away and meet up with his friends caravan and that he would be right behind you,but of course that was a lie.

Luckily you and your mother made it to the caravan and were welcomed with open arms. At the age of 8, your mother became addicted to skooma, and died within a year after being lost into the forest and never found. Now alone with the caravan they began to teach you their own skills, sneaking from two of the khajiits, archery from a wood elf, and how to use a sword from an old nord. You trained every day and began to hone your skills, at the age of 13 this would change. One morning you woke up and everything was gone, you were left alone in the wilderness to fend for yourself. Knowing the caravan would not have just left you you set out to Daggerfall to find out some information. Once you reached Daggerfall the guards had you immediately brought to the orphanage, because you said your parents were dead.

You lived in the orphanage for 2 years, in these 2 years you learned more than you could have imagined. You met a friend named Golskir. He was an old homeless man, but wiser than any other you have ever known. He told you stories of your father and how great of a person he was, and why he was killed. He told you that the high elves had been trying to strike terror into all the bretons in a plan to take over High Rock. And since your father was the lead of the guard and the #1 champion fighter in all of Tamriel he was a prime target. On your 15th birthday when you snuck out of the orphanage to see Golskir, he was gone and never showed. Today was the day that you became an apprentice, the day you had been dreading. After being beaten by the other boys in the orphanage, getting your food taken away from you for thinking when you should have been listening. And forced to sleep in the basement with the rats and no warmth. Now you would have to devote your life to one person for a time and be forced to do something you didn't want to.

You want to be like your father, the best in all of Tamriel. Not some lousy chef, and you had your opportunity when you were contacted by a secret group only known as The High Rock Rangers. And that is what I started off with, or somewhat. This way if you get stuck on the role-play part here is at least a starting point for you and you can change it up as much as you please.

    Conclusion

And to tie up the whole role-play section here are a few points that are huge parts in being a true ranger.

    1. Rangers don't really have a side, try to avoid taking one.
    2. Archery first, swords second. This is the pinnacle of ranger philosophy.
    3. Every wild animal should be prayed on, provided the situation permits.
    4. While a sort of Lawful-neutral, rangers can do whatever is necessary to survive.
    5. Only enter a hold capital for quests and to sell items. All your gear must be found/scavenged.
    6. The forsworn are sworn enemies of rangers, treat them as such.
    7. Eat at least meat, bread, and a vegetable/fruit at least once a day.
    8. Walk everywhere, no fast travel what so ever.
    9. If the situation permits, stop and "make camp" for the night or stay at an inn.
    10. Rangers always help those who need it, provided the intentions are good.

    Really nice one! +1

This is a good build and I was tempted to like to almost purely for the base idea. If I'm not mistaken this build is based off of the Rangers in the Ranger Apprentice series and if not it seems very similar. But you do have a few things to improve. Your second pic pushes the words to the side and makes it fairly hard to read. Your special moves aren't really special but are creative in the description. I would recommend changing them to being special arrows where the Ranger uses either magical of technological means to make the arrows stronger. I'm undecided about the whole do your own backstory thing you mention it's a good idea but you might want to give a base.

Well, doesn't this look familiar! ;)

Are you considering to invest into the Sneak Damage Multiplier perks after level 35? Would love to see a level 50 perk spread, but that is just my preference.

    +1

I fixed the picture, gave a sample role-play part, and what exactly should I change about the special abilities? Anyways thanks so much for the reply and tips and yes it is based of of Rangers Apprentice.

I will work on putting a link for a level 50 perk spread. And as for the damage multipliers, I was considering it but with the addition of flames it is not necessarily need it but I will consider. And thanks for replying!

I think while the way you described them is quite good having them as special combos makes them seem less original. I was thinking it would be more original to call them special arrows that the ranger uses to subdue his target rather then just moves.

I'll give you a like for the presentation alone. While it may not be the most unique, it is definitely a struggle coming up with something original for a first build, so great job with this! I too would like a level 50 perk spread, if that isn't too much hassle for you. That way we know the complete character, rather than being given three quarters of the perks and having to chose the rest.

Nice, love the ranger class and this definitely does it justice!
