I've never really made a thief/assassin character before so I decided to create this build on one of my favourite Elder Scrolls characters, Springheel Jak.

The Theives Guild was always my favourite faction in Oblivion and no quest was more fascinating than the search for the boots of the Legendary thief Springheel Jak. Active 300 years before the events of Oblivion, Jack was thought to have died long ago. However in pursuing the quest it is revealed that he is in fact still living, hidden under the guise of Jakben Earl of Imbel. An ancient vampire, Jak has been living hidden, right in the very heart of the Imperial City, completely unknown to all his neighbours even the so called vampire hunters. A powerful spellcaster, Jak guarded his basement lair with all manner of undead creatures and based on the fact he lived undetected in the heart of the imperial city it is highly likely he was also skilled in manipulating the minds of others.

So without further ado, I present Springheel Jak.

It has been 500 years since I was turned, and my knowledge of Cyrodill's many secrets has reached completion. It was perhaps that meeting, 200 years ago that gave me the urge to explore the lands outside of the Imperial city. A young man, possibly working for that petty band of fools the thieves guild, broke into my home in an attempt to steel the boots I have worn since the very beginning. Perhaps his corpse still rots in the crypt beneath my house, along with all those others who believed they could conquer the mighty Springheel Jak. It is time to venture to pastures new however, and so I leave behind the familiar lands of Cyrodill behind. Now, as I approach Skyrim my path seems clear. I shall remake myself here, and the Nords will know that Springheel Jak...has returned.

Race: The original Springheel Jak was a Breton, so for a role play this is what we will be going with.

Stone: Jak is a confident spellcaster as well as thief, so pick either mage or thief to begin with depending on which you want to up faster. Our endgame is the Ritual Stone as there is no greater feeling when your enemy spots you than suddenly raising all corpses in the area to slaughter them.

Stats: We are going to want a high magicka primarily, as well as some stamina for power attacks with our dagger. We won't really need health as our goal is to remain undetected, but it is always good to have a little bit in there. I played with a ratio of 1/4/2 in Health/Magicka/Stamina.

    Major Skills

Pickpocket: Jak is a Master thief and as such we want to almost completely master this tree. 5 perks in light fingers will make us almost undetectable when searching our marks and Extra Pockets will allow us to carry much more loot. Our main goal in this tree however is Misdirection, as Jak's skill is so great that if an enemy spots him and goes for his weapon, his fingers will scrabble at the empty sheath as Jak's blade draws across his throat. I also took Perfect Touch, just to fully master this tree. Make sure you have misdirection before beginning the Dark Brotherhood, as this will allow you to pickpocket Astrids Blade of Woe, giving us two by the end.

One Handed: Jak is a highly skilled bladesman, wielding daggers with a true subtlety and skill that one may only attain through centuries of practice. 5 perks in Armsman will ensure our blades do maximum damage, with perks in Fighting Stance and Savage Strike to increase the effectiveness of our power attacks. If you take advantage of the exploit above allowing us to get two Blades of Woe you may also want to take Dual Flurry and Dual Savagery, which will allow us to massacre our enemies. Health absorption works per hit so the faster and more often we hit the more health we steal so dual daggers are perfect for this.

Illusion: Jak remained hidden in plane sight, which suggests he was a master manipulator of the mind. All perks in this tree save Master spells will ensure that there are virtually no enemies whose mind cannot be manipulated. Fury spells will be our primary tool, sending our enemies into a blind rage as we silently pick them off one by one. Make sure to get Quiet Casting as soon as possible to ensure the silent raising of corpses and bewitching minds. Dual Casting is also useful, as it boosts the power of illusion spells, allowing even minor fury spells to affect stronger opponents.

Conjuration: Jak's basement crypt was filled with undead servants used to guard his secrets. We will be using Conjuration solely for Necromancy all the way to twin souls and up to Expert spells. Raising our opponents corpses after their allies have just killed them in a blind fury is very satisfying. Permanent thralls will give us away however, so we ignore the master spells. With Dawnguard we will also make use of the 'men' summons, e.g, mistmen, bonemen etc, which are undead and are useful in situations where we have yet to make some corpses.

    Minor Skills

Speech: Jak hides in plain sight and is an expert at convincing and persuading others of his friendly nature. He will also get the best prices for his stolen goods. Only one perk in haggling as a 20% increase in prices is not worth four perks. However we take all other perks to ensure we can sell our stolen wears easily to our trusted network of fences, bribe guards and intimdate anyone who gets in our way.

Sneak: Illusion is our primary method of hiding so we only need one perk in stealth but then we will take the whole of the right side to reach Assassin's Blade so our attacks from stealth with be incredibly deadly. Its also important to take Silent Roll, which will allow us to manouver about the battlefield quickly and quietly.

Restoration: Jak is rarely found and thus rarely damaged but it is never a bad thing to be able to heal quickly when needed. Plus the Necromage perk will be very useful as a Vampire.

Light Armour: As mentioned before, rarely found, rarely harmed so a few perks in Agile Defender will suffice here.

    Form

Vampire Lord: Jak is a vampire, and as such we will be making use of the Vampire lord form. Though the main aim of the build is to remain undetected, in the rare event that we are spotted, Jak displays his most terrifying powers, becoming a horrifying vampiric demon.

    Essential Quests

Thieves Guild: The Thieves guild in Skyrim is in decidedly poor shape. To a master thief such as Jak, this is a disgrace. We will raise the thieves guild back to its former glory, gain Nocturnals favour and create a huge network of fences spread across the whole of Skyrim. This is the main quest for Jak, as it will spread his influence across the whole of skyrim.

Dark Brotherhood: As a Vampire Jak feels a certain bloodlust and what better way to sate it than joining the infamous Brotherhood of Assassins. The empire now considers the Dark Brotherhood to be something of a joke, but under the guidance of Sithis and the Night Mother, the world will soon fear Springheel Jak and his Family of Blood.

Thane Quests: Jak maintains two lives. On one hand he is thief/Assassin extraordinaire, but on the other he is the well known man about town. We will become Thane of every hold, with houses everywhere and so will be sure to provide the Jarls with assistance whenever they need it. To most of Skyrim, Jak will be a famed and beloved hero, with only a few knowing of his true identity.

College Of Winterhold: Jak is a skilled mage, and his quest to uncover the magical secrets of the mortal plane will lead him to the College of Winterhold where he will find more than even he expected.

Dawnguard: Jak has heard rumours of a powerful clan of Vampires living in Skyrim and is not one to pass up the opportunity to increase his Vampiric powers. This will provide us with vampire lord form, vampire bonuses, as well as useful undead summons, including a skeletal horse and dragon.

    Shouts

Aura Whisper: Jak whispers to the night, revealing the presence of all nearby. This is useful immediately upon entering an area, allowing us to plan out our strategy without being detected.

Marked For Death: Jak marks his target, pinpointing their weaknesses before moving in for the final deadly blow with lethal efficiency.

Slow Time: Jak's Vampiric reflexes allow cause his movements to become no more than blurs to his sluggish mortal foes. This will also greatly increase the speed at which we can swing our daggers, giving a massive boost to the health absorption enchantment.

Throw Voice: Jak tricks his opponents into believing he is elsewhere, distracting them as he moves in unnoticed for the killer blow. Use this one regularly in order to remain undetected at all times.

Whirlwind Sprint: Jak dashes forward with incredible speed, rapidly closing the distance between him and the rare opponent who happens to notice him. This will be especially useful against mages and archers who spot us, giving them little time to hit us at range before their blood soaks the ground. This also fits with Jak's incredible agility.

    Equipment

Armor: I like to use the Nightingale armour mainly for the look which is perfect for our legendary thief, however the chest will also increase our stamina, the hood will help our Illusion casting and the boots will silence our footsteps. The gloves we will switch out for the Shrouded Gloves so as to double our backstab damage. However if you like, the Vampire Royal Armor will help to boost our magicka regen so is an adequate replacement for the Nightingale chest.

Weaponry: Springheel Jak only uses daggers so pick your favourite and start stabbing. My favourite is the Blade Of Woe, as its health absorption and even its look are fitting for this build. If you get the misdirection perk before starting the Dark Brotherhood, you will have a chance to obtain two Blades Of Woe by pickpocketing one from Astrid.

Jewellery: Necromancer's Amulet: This amulet received in the quest Blood On The Ice will boost our Magicka and Conjuration at the cost of some health/stamina regen. Blood On The Ice will also fit our role play as it is one of the quests to become Thane of Windhelm. We will present the image of the hero saving the town from a murderer, while secretly searching for a powerful dark magical artefact to increase our power. For rings any that help out with our skills, perhaps increasing our one handed skill. This is really up to personal choice.

    Special Moves

Boots of Springheel Jak: I thought for a long time about a way to simulate the Jaks legendary boots. In Oblivion they added a bonus of 50 to your acrobatics skill, making you much more agile. However seeing as agility has been taken out and theres no real way of increasing it I turned instead to making Jak as silent and undetectable as possible. With that in mind I decided to perhaps make them a special ability focussed on Jak escaping quickly from combat and away from the sight of his enemies (in a manner akin to vanishing into the night).

Shadow Cloak of Nocturnal + Whirlwind Sprint

I thought Shadow Cloak of Nocturnal would be unnecessary considering we can cast invisibility, but when we get spotted the Shadow Cloak proves invaluable. The ability to become completely invisible simply by sneaking removes the time consuming process of finding and casting invisibility. Add whirlwind sprint to this and it becomes a way to instantly retreat from battle, allowing us to escape, reposition and return for a perfect assassination. Whirlwind Sprint also feels fitting with Jak's incredible agility.

Blades of the Bloodwalker: Slow Time recently became my all time favourite shout, especially while playing a vampire class. It was Mason's Volikhar build that really brought it to my attention as a way of representing a Vampires speed and reflexes.

Dual Blade's of Woe + Slow Time

As i said above, the Absorb Health enchantment works per hit as opposed to the damage dealt. This means that daggers (as the fastest swinging weapons) are the most effective at making use of this enchantment. Combine Slow Time with this and you become an unstoppable whirlwind of destruction draining the life from weaker enemies in seconds and even stronger enemies will be unable to stand your onslaught for long.

    Vanish:

    Silent Roll + Invisibility

If spotted Jak leaps into a roll behind cover, but when his opponents move to search for him, he has already disappeared.

    Playstyle

Im going to split this playstyle into two sections. Combat and Daily life. First up:

Combat: Jak is primarily a master thief and as such we want to make use of his Pickpocketing ability even during combat. Once you have it, make use of invisibility and muffle in order to move unnoticed through a room. Locate the primary threats in the room, Master Vampires, Bandit Chiefs ect. In short mark the strongest enemies in the room, these are the ones we will target first. Once found make use of your Pickpocketing skill to significantly decrease the threat they pose to you. Take their weapons and if you have the perk take their armor as well. Jak is a very agile combatant so, in a similar style to Mason's Morag Tong build, proceed to locate an out of sight, out of reach location from which to conduct your slaughter. This is when illusion comes into play. People often use illusion to create a frenzy, with all enemies fighting each other, but not Jak. We will use a finely controlled fury spell to enrage just the strong enemies whose weapons we have removed, then sit back and watch as his former allies converge on him, swiftly removing the only real threats present. An alternative, albeit longer method, is to remove the weapons of the weaker enemies and watch as the power house in the room massacres them. The few foes left alive after these fights will then watch in horror as the bodies of their fallen comrades rise one after another, slaves to the will of Springheel Jak. On the rare occasion that we are seen, we will make use of Shouts to incapacitate or otherwise weaken the remaining foes, before finishing them with our daggers.

Daily Life:  Jaks daily life is completely different to his secret activities. Become Thane of every hold as quickly as you can, this will allow us to purchase a house in many holds, as well as land to build our own homes in some areas. Become as rich as you possibly can, pickpocket every rich person you can see and sweep their house for valuables before selling them to one of your many fences across Skyrim. Also, for a role play, feed regularly in order to remain at stage 1 of Vampirism. This will ensure our secret remains hidden from all. Also having to feed adds an element of challenge to being a Vampire, which is otherwise pretty much removed with the Dawnguard updates. Continue to follow the night mother's instructions even after you complete the Dark Brotherhood, carrying out contracts when they come in as well as maintaining a continual supply of gold to the thieves guild. Also for your role play, find some fine clothes to wear during your day to day activities, as we can't be seen strolling around in our famous thieves armour now can we. By late game you should be the owner of a vast criminal empire, whom none would dare to cross, while still maintaining the friendly 'man about town' persona. Your wealth will be immense, with continual top ups from being the Head of the Brotherhood and Thieves Guild, as well as selling everything at the highest price. Jak will have become the perfect Boogeyman, spoken of in whispers as the leader of the most powerful dark empire in the world, capable even of assassinating the emperor.

I hope you enjoy this build, I had great fun with the versatility of the class as well as the unique role play aspects of the build. The fact that it is based on one of my favourite characters in the Elder Scrolls series just makes it even better.

Be Sure to check out my other builds: The Black Swordsman and The Druid

I like it, you get my like, but I wish you would go a little more in depth with your choices for the Shouts. Also I wish you would add in an equipment section. But you definitely get my +1

Well put together, with good lore. Good combat tactics. Great job!

I like it. Assassin/thief builds always intrigue me and this is no exception. Though I do agree with Emer an equipment section could help out the build. +1

Thanks for the input. I've added in an equipment section and updated the shouts detailing how and when to make use of them. Hope it helps.

I really like this build as a whole!  My only concern is that it seems like there are too many skills...I kinda could see the build without destruction...just a suggestion but +1 from me!

You should try to come up with a way to simulate the boots of Springheel Jak.  Obviously that's easier said than done, with no acrobatics, and no jump height/distance modifiers (except via console).  Maybe using Whirlwind Sprint as your default trigger shout, also a lot of silent rolling, maybe pick up the Steed stone to ensure you are always light on your feet.  You could pick up Cushioned, to aid you in daring acrobatic escapes, but that corners you into wearing a full set of Heavy Armor.  Granted, you can make it weightless with Conditioning or The Steed, but there aren't many heavy sets that look relatively slim.  Steel Plate and General Tullius are about all I can think of...  Maybe Ebony Mail.  But then you also need to match boots/gloves/helm, and it really just starts seeming like more trouble than it's worth.

But yeah, I really like the concept, I think it'd be cool if you focused a bit more on the execution.  You don't necessarily need to explain every shout, skill, and quest: if you flesh out the play style a bit more, those will be self-explanatory.  Just fiddle around with the build next time you load up your Skyrim disc, get creative with the gameplay, try new things.  An example is in Mason's Morag Tong build, a lot of the gameplay involves scoping out your surroundings, and using stealth to get to a tactical, safe position (e.g., on top of a pillar, behind some rubble, up on a ledge, etc.).  That's the type of intangible quality that can make gameplay much more unique and rewarding.  Try to come up with stuff like that to really highlight Jak's acrobatic nature.

Thanks for the input. I played this build a while ago and only just put it up. I restarted it a couple of days ago in order to remind myself of how I played this class. I have now out up some 'special moves' that I used regularly, including one that I used to represent Jaks agility and his boots. I've also updated the playstyle, to include a specific way of handling combat situations as a magical thief/assassin. As for the armour I did think of making use of the Ebony mail, but i found the poison effect tends to give away your location. Also Nightingale Armor just looks so cool and fits perfectly with this build.

Thanks! I didn't actually use Destruction all that much so feel free to remove it. In oblivion Jak was skilled with Destruction magic so it felt right to include it for a role play, but if you are rarely seen (as you should be) you won't really need it.

a nice way to simulate the boots is to have either fortify stamina& Stamina Regen with max enchanting or add muffle to either of them instead of fortify sneak
