Fallout 4: Making A Murderer

  • March 21, 2016

After playing some Fallout 4 where there is quite a few creepy locations and quests involving serial killers as well as being inspired by the classic Skyrim Character Build: The Windhelm Butcher I have decided to compile my own serial killer guide. WARNING: Some very light side quest spoilers.

If you travel to the Fens Street Sewer just outside of Diamond City you will stumble across a super creepy lair of a serial killer called the Fens Phantom who occupied it before the Great War. In the lair you will find the grisly remains of his victims as well as a series of holotapes of him taunting a detective who is hunting him. What if the Lone Survivor was the Fens Phantom?

    What's Your Costume?

Every serial killer worth his salt has a creepy costume and Fallout 4 has many choices in that manner. Are you a disgruntled fisherman wearing a Longshoreman outfit carrying a hooked Big Jim? Are you a psychotic high powered businessman in a suit and a mask? Are you a crazed hermit that lives in the woods dressed just in rags? This is mostly down to player choice, whos your favourite horror slasher or what your M.O. is.

    What's Your M.O?

Every slasher has a modus operandi. The Fens Phantom made displays out of his victims bodies but after 200 years things change and you can pretty much make up your own. Are you a posh sophisticate? You might want to stalk and kill other upper class citizens of various settlements. Maybe the the death of your wife\husband broke your mind even farther? How about every time you see a NPC that reminds you of them you snap and go on an axe killing rampage and every time coming to without any memory of it. Are you the local doctor? Maybe instead of healing people you are poisoning them with the syringer.

    Double Life

No matter what type of killer you are it's pretty clear that you also live a separate life. Before the great war you were an army vet with a family and home and in a Post-Bomb era you can have all that again. Maybe you buy Homeplate and become a trader in Diamond City or maybe you go out and build a plantation and become a farmer. You can make friends and form relationships but always keep your nightlife secret. Never run around in your costume during the day, never kill in front of others and if you do leave no witnesses, any "trophy rooms" you decide to build should always remain secret and whenever you go out on your nightly escapades try to remaing hidden and inconspicuous as possible.

    The Lair

The Fens Phantom comes with a preset lair already with the Fens Street Sewers but after 200 years and a ghoul infestation you might decide that the place is sufficiently compromised and decide to find a new place to keep your knives\trophies\costumes. And there is plenty of places in the Commonwealth to accommodate you. Maybe you were once an escapee from the Parson State Asylum and returning there after a kill feels like home. Maybe you are a cultist intending to kill one person for every woman wrongfully burned at the stake in the Witch Trials and the irony of hiding the bodies in the Witch Museum is to much to pass up. Maybe you lay in wait at the centre of the macabre Milton Parking Lot Maze.

If you can't find any place to suit your needs you can always build a secret murder room hidden somewhere in your settlement away from prying eyes. The Costal Cottage is a pretty good place to build with a cave under it.

    The Murder Weapon

You've likely already decided on what weapon you will use but their are a few unques worth pointing out depending on what type of killer you are going to be. If you are a secret cultist offering up souls to the Great God Ug-Qualtoth use Kremvh's Tooth. If you are an axe murderer check out Grognak's Axe. If you are a crazed hillbilly bent on committing massacres then check out the Reckoning. And if you are in to the classics you might want to use Pickman's Blade. I think the best serial killer weapons are melee but as I mentioned before the syringer is the perfect weapon for an evil doctor.

     Dear Detective...

When you wander around the Fens Sewers you will notice a few holotapes recorded by the Phantom for an unnamed detective that he seemed to have a cat and mouse relationship with, it's even mentioned that the killer respected him and didn't really want to hurt him. You can mirror this idea by becoming companions with Nick Valentine while not on your nightly hunts. Become close and even help him solve a few crimes, if you want to you can kill a person after each solved case and leave an anonymous trophy for Nick. Shades of Hannibal and Will Graham.

    The Copycat

The Fens Phantom is not the only serial killer in Fallout 4. There's one still alive and kicking and plying his trade in Pickman's Gallery. Pickman is killing people and turning their remains in to art as well as leaving a calling card with each body. You have two choices here, after fighting your way through goons in to the bowels of the Gallery you can kill or save Pickman. If you decide you're offended by this guy and consider him a copycat then kill him as well OR if Pickman has gained your respect help him out and he will award you with a thank you letter and a knife called Pickman's Blade.

This is great! Do you play on PC at all? If so, it might be worth it to see if there are any mods fit for a playthrough of this sort. Or, if there aren't any, maybe wait until the CK is out? I know there have to be at least a few outfits or weapons out that are befitting of a devious killer.

Well would you mind if I took a look at the mods currently out? I could give you a list if you were interested.

You know you can mod a Tire Iron to be an Axe so that could be a good weapon for an Axe Murderer as opposed to Grognaks Axe.
