    Let’s Roleplay: Prospectors

Welcome, to a handy guide by yours truly in Fallout RP, Let’s Roleplay. This will focus on the habits, inventories, and much more about our favorite post-apocalyptic dungeon-delvers, the prospectors.

    What is a Prospector?

A prospector, for those with limited Fallout experience, is a junk collector of the best kind, searching in Pre-War buildings for working tech, caps, weapons, and armor. They will scavenge for almost anything worth something, though they often hit just one or two really profitable finds in their life. The first prospector you will probably meet is Easy Pete, resident of Goodsprings and retired delver. If you strike up a dialogue with him, he will tell you his story. He had a “great find out east” before he was run off it. After this, he retired, and now lives a herding life in town. When exiting the conversation, he’ll tell you about the Goodsprings Schoolhouse, which may have some great loot for those willing to access it. That brings us to our first location.

    Where Can a Prospector Go?

    • Goodsprings Schoolhouse is a great starter find, with easy lockpicking/terminals, really easy enemies, reasonably varied loot, and it’s close to where you start.
    • The next great find for a prospector is the NCRCF, but only if you’re willing to fight some convicts (depending on whether or not you’ve assisted Goodsprings. There’s lots of weapons and semi-valuable armor here.
    • The Bison Steve Hotel has plenty of caps, chems, weapons, and ammo for the well-armed prospector. If you can fight off the two dozen or so Convicts, you’ll find loot worth a pretty penny.
    • You may find that Nipton itself has good loot in its many buildings, and the “town hall” type building also has some stock. However, if you enter, the Legion will be hostile.
    • The REPCONN Test Site is full of energy weapons, Stealth Boys, and weapon repair kit ingredients.
    • REPCONN Headquarters has some great finds as well, fun lore, and a little bit of a creepy atmosphere
    • Sunset Sarsaparilla Bottling Factory contains Festus, your favorite cowboy robot, as well as quite a few caps, and also 20+ Sunset Sarsaparilla bottles
    • Vault 34, if you can handle the rads, is well worth the visit, the armory being well stocked and it having a handy supply of Rad-X and RadAway.
    • All of the Vaults, save for #3 make good looting as well.

    What Should a Prospector Wear?

Anything! You can find prospectors across the wasteland wearing Remnants Armor and Field Hand Outfits, but here are some suggestions:

    • Leather Armor - light, protective, and common enough to be oft-repaired, this makes a great starter armor.

    • Pre-War Clothes - basically everything except for the suit makes great, airy desert clothing, plus, they give a nice agility boost too.

    • any variety of wide-brim hats, as well as the Roving Trader Hat, which gives a great +5 Barter. Wide-brimmed hats give a great aesthetic, and make sense in the Mojave.

    • The best armor you can find - sure, you could sell that Combat Armor, but won’t it help so much against cazadores? A prospector takes advantage of everything the can get their hands on.

What Weapons Should a Prospector Use?

    • Trail Carbines and Repeaters make great weapons for any prospector. They are hard-hitting, common, and use common ammo.

    • 9 and 10mm pistols are great weapons. They have insanely common ammo, use very little AP, and fit the theme of old-world tech.

    • the Varmint Rifle is another weapon that is common, easy to use, and has a small profile.

    What Does a Prospector Carry?

A prospector travels light, so as to be able to carry as much juicy loot as possible. I would recommend that you carry only one-two pairs of clothes, one pair of armor (light or medium is preferred until you get power armor/power armor training), one-three weapons, and around 300 rounds of ammo total. Backpack mods are helpful for aesthetics.

Very interesting post here, and I quite like the direction you're going. Would love to see more material!

One thing I'd like to see you add is less about specific mechanics and locations, and more about the RP/character aspects of a Prospector. What sort of allegiances could you see them having, what sort of route would you recommend taking, things that make your prospector an individual with a story!

Thanks. I can sure do that, and I can adjust the next one (which, sadly, got delayed because I was out of town all weekend).
