MAJOR UPDATE!: If you're new to this thread, I've revived it after a year's absence for reasons explained on the third post on the fourth page. Take a look if you'd like. :)
Hello there!
I'm new to this site. My name is Etch, and I'm relatively new to Skyrim, although I started modding it almost immediately after purchasing it for PC. I'd seen my sister play it on Xbox 360 before, and had tried my hand at it occassionally, but I couldn't stand the graphics. When I saw screenshots of what I could turn Skyrim into, though, I did some more research and decided to try it out on PC. I've had the game for about a week or two now, and have been playing it almost non-stop since. However, thanks to me constantly adding on new mods, I haven't actually started a save that lasted more than a day or two in real life. I think I've finally found a place with my mods that I'm happy with, and so I've decided to try roleplaying in the game.
If anyone wants my modlist, I'd be happy to throw it at them so they can get a better idea of what sort of gameplay I'm getting.
That said, I have roleplayed before, for years in fact, just not in Skyrim. I have been forum roleplaying since I was seven, and so I have no problem with creating characters and the such...usually.
However, I'm not used to working with other people's lore. I've always created my own universes to write in. The closest I've gotten to working with someone else's lore was when I first started RP with MMO RP in an MMO called Age of Wushu, which is essentially a chinese martial arts game. Really, though, the game's lore wasn't very limiting, and you didn't have to know much about it to fit into it, because there wasn't much of it.
Skyrim is obviously completely different. I think I could spend my entire life trying to learn the lore and still not know everything there is to know. So...Down to the point. My character is a Khajiit named Kiahni. I chose the Khajiit even though I knew it would be challenging since their lore is not seen as often in regular gameplay, mainly because I was immediately attracted to that race. If someone truly believes I should change her race, though, I think I can manage it. I have a google docs here where I answered a bunch of questions for her (I think I found the questions on this site somewhere, actually..?) although I'm not quite finished, it's mostly done. I can always change pretty much everything here, though, since it's a complete WIP and I'd like to have an open mind.
Basically, I'm looking for advice on how I can better fit her into the lore. After I feel happy with that, perhaps some tips on creating visually appealing screenshots for her character profile would be helpful.
I've toyed around a bit with the idea of amnesia, in order to bypass the whole lore problem, but I don't want to completely ignore the problem, either. Still, that idea is on the table, as well, if people think that's better.
P.S. I've opened the google doc to commenting, so if you already know how to do that in google docs, feel free, but then let me know that you've commented on the forum. Otherwise, just message me here. :)
EDIT: I finished V2 of the google doc. It should be viewable from the same link. I've added a completely new section and made some changes to her backstory. I kind of feel like she's created her own set of non-god and non-cultural centered beliefs, which makes sense from an objective standpoint since she was isolated so much in her early life so she wouldn't have many cultural beliefs, and her only social companion, her father, was non-religious and quite a unique man as far as his beliefs go himself, so it makes sense...But it also makes me wonder if I'm breaking lore by having all these beliefs. It's particularly noticable in the new violence section involving her rituals for the dead and pillaging...

Edit: I didn't realize how many mods I have. O.o
I've just been through your Goog doc, Etch. I haven't left a comment mainly because I think you should consider uploading what you have there into an RP profiile :) Just add an image or two and I think you'd be set. I know you're after tips on taking appealing screenshots, but I think for me what matters is that you're able to capture Kiahni as you played her. Like, if you're happy with how the screenshot comes out then that's all that matters. That said, Soly has a nice tutorial on post-processing using paint.net that may help, plus the Art Group has talented folks if you needed further support :)
In truth, making something as lore-accurate as possible can be a rabbit-hole best avoided. For example, you've said:
"Her parents were searching for a fresh start after realizing their life in Elsweyr had turned sour.
As of 4E 201 Elsweyr is an anachronism, so natives are perhaps more likely to refer to the regions they are from as Anequina or Pellitine, depending on from which they came. While it may help to go into more detail about why they left, maybe connecting that with a lack of faith in Aldmeri Dominion governance or maybe feeling as though they have seen through the lies of the Thalmor about their Void Night claims, it can raise more questions than it answers. Especially if the character herself doesn't know - as you say, she was an infant at the time :)

@Chris
Thanks, I do appreciate the help. :)
@Paws
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to look at this. ^.^ Thank you for the tips on the screenshots, although I don't really understand what you said about the lore. Could you maybe dumb it down for me. >.< I'm still very unfamiliar with the lore.
For example, define all of these: Anequina, Pellitine, Aldmeri Dominion, Thalmor (Isn't that one of the elf races..?), and Void Night.

Sure :)
So, after the Oblivion Crisis (which was 201 years before the date in which TES V Skyrim is set) Elsweyr split from the Empire. About 85 years before the current date, something called the Void Nights happened - the Masser and Secunda moons vanished from the night skies. For the Khajiit whose fur-stock (or subrace) is determined by the moons, this was a hugely scary time. Not much info is available on that period, which is why I say getting details 100% right can be more trouble than it's worth, but it could be argued that it crippled the Khajiiti race. No children born for two years, terrible stuff like that.
The Thalmor are the governing body of the Aldmeri Dominion, the political party which came to power in the Summerset Isles (now known as Alinor), home of the High Elven Altmer people, following the Oblivion Crisis. They claimed to have ended the Void Nights using "dawn magic" and, by that action, bought the support of the cat-folk. Now Anequina (the Northern state of what once was Elsweyr) and Pellitine (the Southern state) are client-states of the Dominion.
The questions these things raise are often open to interpretation. How much freedom do the rulers of these two states have? Are they puppets of their Altmeri overlords, or do the Thalmor governers give them autonomy provided the cats support their armies and provide fiscal support? Were the Void Nights a cruel eugenics experiment that some among the Khajiit know the truth of, or did the Thalmor legit save the day as they are so often conveniently able to do? Interpretation of those things is largely on us :)

Note: Paws here is a lot more knowledgeable than me regarding Lore, (and I just noticed that he's left a comment so he probably explained it better) but I figured I'd drop in because it's a fun set of questions.
Anequina and Pellitine are essentially two different states/holds of Elesyr, though at different points they've been separate kingdoms, or combined into the singular province of Eleswyr.
Aldmeri Dominion, again something that can be a lot deeper, but really it's an alliance between the Khajiit, Altmer, and Bosmer. Though really it's debatable how much power/control either the Bosmer or Khajiit have in the Dominion, because from what we've seen it's mostly focused on the Altmer having power over the other two.
The Thalmor are super complicated... Again Paws has a better explanation but think of them as an extremist group of the High Elves (Altmer) that managed to rise to power and essentially become one of the strongest powers in the known world. They have an end goal of destroying all men, for various complicated reasons.
Urgh, the Void Nights...I don't have a great way to simplify this because I think it's the most complicated of the four. Right, so at some point after the Oblivion Crisis (so 100-200 years before Skyrim), the Khajiit percieved the moons to have disappeared from the sky. Now the moons and their movements are crucial to the Khajiit as race, so this kind of screwed with the birth of children, their entire culture, their religion, everything. Essentially, the entire race was massively armed during the 'Void Nights'. Then the Thalmor come along, 'fix' the Moons (or claim to) and then this indebts the Khajiit to the Thalmor.

So I had a supermassive message that I was going to drop (nearly hitting the 500-word mark) but I figured it'd be more efficient to just ask you a quick question. What exactly is the Google Doc? Is it just a tool to help you plan your character, or is this more or less what you see the build itself being at the end. I only ask because those would trigger two very different responses, because generally speaking a build is pretty heavy on the Gameplay, so at the moment this would just fit better as a Roleplaying Profile than a Build.
If you are planning on bringing stuff in, and this is just the character, then I might as well re-structure my thoughts because at first I assumed this was the build (just incomplete).
Anyway, I'll just say for now that the character was fascinating to me, an awesomely detailed character that had a lot of...well character to her, and felt pretty real to me (like I could see her being present in a story). Which is absolutely great, and I would love to see more of her.
