WiP Build: The Absorber

  • December 17, 2017

    The Absorber:

Hi everyone, my name is Phantasm and I just wanted to put my first build in the Workshop while I finish it. The build is based on creating a bit of a loop where you constantly absorb Stamina, Magicka and Health before using it in some of the more unique ways (so as more than just Power Attacks and Spells). Mainly I wanted to focus on the Dwarven Black Bow of Fate, and the Visage of Mzund, but there are a lot of really fun combinations that can be made with this character.

    Basic Information:

Race: Any Race is a fine choice, but Altmer, Redguards and Argonians would probably fit the idea behind it a little better than the others. I've played this as an Argonian for the health regen

    Standing Stone: Atronach

    Skills:

Archery is probably the main skill of the build because it allows us to increase our basic damage with the Dwarven Black Bow of Fate and turn it into a relatively powerful weapon. The focus is mostly going to be on quicker attacks, shooting off an arrow just to get the enchantment, so perks like Quick Shot and Ranger are really useful, but the power boosts wouldn't hurt either.

Enchanting is a relatively minor skill that's mostly used for refilling the enchantments on our weapons. It can also be used with early level enchantments, getting some basic absorption for all three stats.

One-Handed is mostly just for the excuse of using Bloodscythe and Soulrender which are just fun weapons that fit the theme fairly well, have a set location but aren't entirely easy to come across like other weapons. We're mainly going to want to focus on the Dual-Wielding perks, especially Flurry which improves speed (and thus absorption speed).

Heavy Armor is a minor skill yet again, mostly just used for a bit more bulk and giving the ability to tank a few hits before absorbing

Alteration, Destruction and Restoration are all rather gimmicky skills here. Alteration is mainly going to be because we're using Equilibrium (but the early-game Flesh Spells don't hurt), Destruction just as a way to use Magicka and Restoration is for the really cool 'Magicka Absorption + Circle Spell' combination which will give the character a way to constantly recharge stats.

    Perks - Level 39

Archery: Overdraw 5/5, Eagle Eye, Critical Shot (1/3), Power Shot, Hunter's Discipline, Quick Shot and Ranger

Alteration: Expert Alteration, Dual Casting, Stability and Atronach

    Destruction: Novice Destruction

Enchanting: Enchanter 1/5, Soul Squeezer and Soul Siphon

Heavy Armor: Juggernaut 5/5, Well Fitted, Tower of Strength and Matching Set

One-Handed: Armsman 5/5, Dual Flurry 2/2, Dual Savagery and Bladesman 3/3

    Equipment:

Weapons: Bloodscythe, Soulrender and the Dwarven Black Bow of Fate

Armour: Azhidal's Armour with Visage of Mzund (powerful Stamina based attack)

    Combos/Gameplay

First Combo: Visage of Mzund/Bloodskal Blade and Become Ethereal followed by Black Bow of Fate, repeat

So the idea behind this combo is to combine the really cool way that Become Ethereal isn't broken by Visage of Mzund or the Bloodskal Blade, and using that to dish out some damage by combining the two powers to deal damage where we can't be hurt. The Black Bow of Fate can then be used to rapidly regenerate stats (mostly Stamina, but Health and Magicka can be useful) before going back into the Visage of Mzund-Bow of Fate combination. There are plenty of alternative ways to use this combo as well.

Instead of the Black Bow of Fate, Guardian Circle can be used with 80% Spell Absorption (achieved using the Atronach Stone and Perk) and Respite to regenerate all three stats. The Healing from it regenerates your Health and Stamina while the MA can absorb Magicka from the circle as well, making it a really powerful option. What's better is that you can charge it up with Become Ethereal to dodge damage.

Stability and Fortify Alteration Potions can be used to keep Become Ethereal running for longer, and an Amulet of Talos would reduce the cooldown time. It just makes the combination a little bit more viable, and reduces time spent not in Ethereal Mode.

Second Combo: Drain Vitality, Bloodscythe + Soulrender and Secret of Protection/Bones of the Earth

The idea behind this combo is to constantly drain stats while remaining nearly impossible to hurt. It's pretty simple in practise, throw up Bones of the Earth or Secret of Protection before rushing into combat and hitting as many enemies as possible with Drain Vitality (Three Words). That allows you to absorb 5 points of all three stats for 30 seconds, meaning you've got a slow, 250 point 'heal' of all your stats), throw in Bloodscythe and Soulrender where you get 15 Magicka and Health for each Power Attack and your looking pretty good already.

With the Power Attacks, don't forget that the Dual-Wield Power Attack actually means you hit an enemy three times, meaning one stat should get a 30 point drain for the attack rather than a 15 point. Swap between the two to fight Mages or normal enemies (Mages lose the 30 Magicka so they're weaker, others lose the 30 Health).

Other powers that would work fairly well here are Secret of Strength which would allow you to use Power Attacks more easily (and you could still throw up Bones of the Earth). Bardic Knowledge or Adrenaline Rush would add an extra Stamina Regeneration effect, allowing you to regain all three skills at a really insane rate.

Note: I have a mod called Improved Drain Vitality that causes it to work like it should (absorbing stats instead of damaging them). Soul Tear is a passable option if it isn't availabe on PS4/Xbox One.

Third Combo: Circle of Protection + Destruction Spells (Sparks/Flames/Frostbite)

This is a really simple little one, and is just designed to give you a really quick shot of Magicka through 80% Spell Absorption and the Circle Spell while then using that Magicka to constantly power your basic Destruction spells. If you were taking the build further, you could use Lightning Storm later on for a massive power boost.

    Final Words:

Is there a better way to say that? Final Words feels a bit strange to say but I couldn't think of another way to write it. I hope you all like the build, at the moment I need one of those cool perk spreads, some images (not screenshots, PC isn't good enough to run heavy mods) and then look through uhh. I know the Vault has an area where all the exploits/glitches are, but I don't remember the name of it...Uhh, there are some exploits that I need to explain but I figured that linking them would work better.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to improve the build. I'm not really a good writer which is why I haven't written a Backstory or anything, but I figureed that builds don't always need one, with this build you can kind of just fit your own character into the framework, or that's the idea. Let me know if builds 'have' to have that sort of thing and I'll think of something quick.

I like this idea a lot. The writing can use a bit of polish, like you said, and for that I woulda suggest you stop, consider what point you’re trying to get across, and then use as few words as possible, in simple language, in order to explain your thoughts to us as if we had never heard of this Glitch you’re referring to. And possibly as if we’d never played Skyrim before.

Another thing that might help would be if you explained your choices in gear with a bit more detail. The build could also use a perk spread. Some of these skills, and how they work, are a touch specialized. Also, is there a reason why heavy armor versus the rest of the Deathbrand Armor set? It’s stats with a couple of Fortify Destruction accessories seem like they might work well with this kind of build for endgame.

Ah, I hadn't really thought about that. Thanks for the suggestions Mercurias, I was so sure that most people had been playing the game for years anyway, but I'll definitely make sure to explain the glitches in more detail. Do you think I should just link them, or post the glitch in the build itself? I was definitely going to get around most of what you mentioned in the second message, the Perk Spread is something I'll go ask in the Art Group about (that is the right place isn't it?).

As for the armour. Well really I just wanted to get across the idea that the character is supposed to be tanky (which will show up more with the perks), even if you can manage to get really similar AR rating with Light and Heavy Armor, I just think that wearing the heavier armor automatically makes it feel like the build is really tanky. But yeah, the enchantments from the Deathbrand Armor probably would make a bit more sense in the end.

I'll try and work on wording it, but as you can tell, I tend to talk a bit too much :) So I'm sorry if it feels longer than it should be :(

Thank you for all your help Mercurias, it's been really good to have it so quickly.

Well besides most of the touch up stuff Merc posted, i don't really have anything to add except that if you don't feel like using 'Final Words' maybe try 'Closing Notes' or 'Closing Words'

Looking pretty good so far, just waiting for the presentation to be presented fully and I might stop in along the way as well (Hopefully with some feedback at that point lol)

    Hi Flamez,

@Phantasm - I like the concept a lot. The idea of sucking stats from your enemies is quite appealing to me. Besides peeeechurs, what I'd like to see you touch on is how you handle early game with this build because a lot of your gear is closer to mid-late game stuff. Deathbrand stuff doesn't even kick in until level 36 I believe. For me, playing as the character from the get go is super important. At least a semblance of what you plan on doing in the endgame should be present in the early game.

Hey Phantasm I really like the mechanic of leeching off of your enemies in general gameplay not only Skyrim so this is an interesting build for me. Regarding the early game Lis mentioned above I think enchanting should be the way to goactually I 've played something like that and I relied heavily on enchanting. There are also a few spell mods adding spells that absorb stats like drain health etc.

Good luck with this one interested to see how it will turn out.
