WiP Lore Expedition: The Khajiiti Pantheon - Part 2/3

  • November 29, 2017

Before I let everyone at the article, I want to direct you to Part 1 of the series, and mention that this is not intended to be an incredibly deep dive into the Khajiit Pantheon, but rather a series of relatively simple explanations and introductions into the core ideas. I heavily recommend reading through any sources that I mention here, the Lore Archives and anything linked in either the Lore Tool: Resources and FAQ or Quick Guide to doing your own research.

    The Moons

Right, so today's article is looking at three of the deities of the Khajiit, namely Jone, Jode and Lorkhaj. Now, the Khajiit Culture, and thus the Pantheon is heavily based on the moons, they're revered more than any other culture, with none of the others really coming that close outside of the occasional mention of the moons being Lorkhan's body. This reverence for the Moons can be seen most easily with the use of Moon Sugar being a common indicator. They have a rather fascinating, cultural relationship with a rather detrimental drug.

The khajiit understand it to be "crystallized moonlight," caught in the water of the Topal Sea and brought to the sugarcane groves of the Tenmar by the force of the twin tides. By partaking of the sugar, the khajiit believes they are consuming small portions of their gods' eternal souls.

Nevertheless, moon-sugar is a daily part of khajiit life, and their kingdom's chief export.

This reverence of the moon extends beyond Moon Sugar with the more important, and more prominent example being the Lunar Lattice or ja-Kha'jay. The Lattice is essentially the controlling factor in what a Khajiit is born as, changing their form at birth depending on the state of both Masser and Secunda. The mythology of the Lattice is generally attributed to Azurah, who bound the Khajiit to the Moons, in order to keep Nirn(i) safe from Ahnurr (Anu).

The khajiit attribute their improbable biology to the workings of the ja-Kha'jay (the "Moonstrings," or "Lunar Lattice"), a magical and semi-divine phenomena believed to derive from the influence of Tamriel's twin moons, Masser and Secunda.

And Azurah named them Khajiit and told them her Second Secret and taught them the value of secrets. And Azurah left and spoke the Third Secret to the Lunar Lattice and bound the Khajiit to the Lattice, as is proper for Nirni's secret defenders. Then Azurah spoke the Third Secret again, and the Moons shone down on the marshes and their light became sugar.
