When (and by whom) was enchanting invented?

  • July 12, 2018

So I'm trying to run a character who knows about the Soul Cairn and, on account of that, has sworn off using enchantments. However, I'm noticing there are many artifacts with strange powers that (as far as I can tell) weren't created with enchanting, like the White Phial (which was supposedly made with alchemy) or the Aetherium Forge's creations (which run on magical uranium, basically). I'm curious as to what other items I could use that would also give me an edge over my opponents (because of certain other self-imposed rules, namely that my character doesn't own a smithy yet, and therefore he basically has no access to improved items), and I think he'd be willing to use items that weren't infused with souls.

So, my question is: when was enchanting invented?

From what I have gathered the earliest concrete information we have on the subject is that Ahzidal, the first human to master it, was chummy with Ysgramor, but we also know that he got his info from the Dwemer, the Chimer, the Ayleids, the Falmer and the Aldmer.

Digging deeper into the lore, we know the Dwemer used it (on account of all the soul gems powering their anniminculi); the Ayleids seem to have gotten their juice from Aetherius' meteors (although we can't really state that they didn't use souls), and the same goes for the Snow Elves (I haven't found any fixed enchanted items in the Forgotten Vale, other than Auriel's Bow and Shield, which are probably Aedric in nature). Figuring out the other mer's earliest uses of enchanting is kind of a crapshoot.

We can also agree that the Ideal Masters got their grubby crystals on the soul juice game during the Merethic Era at its latest, since Durnehviir came to them looking for power (thus they were already so powerful that even a god damn dragon who was regarded as a god thought that a deal with them would be beneficial).

Aaaand that's about all the information that I was able to figure out. So, what do you guys think? Do you know of any earlier mention of enchanting? I want this to be more of a consolidated guide on the history of Enchanting than just a simple question, so I'd appreciate any and all commentary, criticisms, ideas and data.

Hmm, if I recall, a Direnni magus by the name of Raven purportedly invented it.

Hmm, the problem with Raven Direnni is that she's not really prominent in the lore. From what I gather, the fact that she invented Enchanting is supposedly a legend; sure, that myth means that Enchanting was a thing during her time (whether she did invent it or not), but taking into consideration the facts that the only date we have on her is her participation on the battle of Glenumbra Moor (1E 482) and that she was an Altmer, that doesn't put a very concrete date on the invention. Besides, as I said before, Durnehviir already thought the Ideal Masters were pretty swanky back during the times of the Dragon Cult (although, again, Raven was an Altmer, so she could have invented it herself far before, as some powerful elven mages like herself manage to live thousands of years). DAMN YOU UNCLEAR LORE, DAMN YOU TO BE IGNORED BY MOST PLAYERS!

I mean, it makes sense, like with real history, the further you go back, the further you get swamped by conjecture, unknowns, exaggerations, etc
