Lore Gem: On Magicka, the Soul, Draugr, and Their Relation

  • May 29, 2016

This week I'll be examining and featuring a nearly unseen title among the Lore Group. On Magicka, the Soul, Draugr and Their Relation is an interesting article posted at the end of 2015 (literally December 27th) that looks into the relationship between the mentioned topics, both by using in-game books, and other Lore Articles.

The first part, dealing with Magicka is the most interesting in my opinion, it works very closely off the works, On Magic: Magicka, Nirn and You, written by Kyrielle and On Magic: Origins and Applications written by Kynareth. Now the interesting part of this segment, is Runamoke's theory that Magicka isn't just part of Nirn, but either life itself, or at the very least life on Nirn. And this is an incredibly interesting theory, that I cannot do nearly as much justice as Runamoke does, but I can at least give you but a small extract of his work

Kyrielle calls magicka a necessity for life to exist, and on this I agree; however, I would argue that magicka is life itself. If the whole of Nirn is magicka, then it would stand to reason that life, or at least the life of Nirn, is also magicka.

Now you'd think...Dragonborn, you've discussed a single interesting idea from Runamoke's work, what else can you bring to the table? Well my dear reader, have you moved onto the fascinating theory he has about the Soul, or at the very least memory and conscious thought? Now, essentially the idea here is that the Soul is made up of two parts, consciousness (what makes you, you, memories, identity, that kind of thing) and life force, now Kyrielle (In Two Parts of a Whole Make a Soul), according to Runamoke suggests that these two are separate, while Runamoke argues that they are connected, and...well I'll let you read the rest

I would disagree. I argue that the two pieces (if there are indeed only two) are actually both composed entirely of magicka and are simply differentiated to perform separate functions, much in the same way as stem cells differentiate to form different tissues.

Now the third and final aspect of Runamoke's is the shortest of the three, and I won't go into it in great detail here because of that, but it examines the idea of Draugr working as a kind of...Soul Gem for Dragon Priests (and I believe other higher ranking Draugr), transferring Magicka, and their very life force to their priest in order to sustain that Dragon Priest's life.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that's a wrap for the feature this week. I've hardly done Runamoke's work justice, so I can't recommend giving it a read enough, it's definitely one of the most interesting, underrated discussions I've seen in the Lore Group, that's done in a particularly interesting way that really does engage the reader.

I don't have anything else to pitch, but if you have any feedback on how this feature went just let me know in the comments below (but damn it, you better comment on Runamoke's Article first )

    Thanks for this DB

Ah, no need for the thanks Phil, glad I could give it a bit of a boost...Now I just need to drop in over there and leave my thoughts on the matter

By the way, do you think the analysis works better than just selling ti like a CB HGS works? I'm a bit worried that it makes it a bit...hmm don't know the word but it takes some of that punch away I guess.

Accept my gratitude dammit. As a host of this group I should be doing  this stuff. I cannot tell you why I do not, chalk it up to laziness, piss poor sense of salesmanship, lack of connection to what people would like to discuss or simply that it never really occurred to me until now that I should. Pick a truth you like best  For all of the above, you have my thanks

Uhhm, about presentation I am loathe to critique. As the creator of the Spotlight/Gem it should be what you enjoy doing. Yet as it involves a heavy subject, the reader could be exhausted before they get to the article.  But that is not your problem, which brings us back to which you prefer doing

So yeah. Dunno. Karves? Anybody? Thoughts?

Well if you insist, I suppose I can gracefully accept said gratitude on behalf of me, myself and his royalness, King DB MDCCXXI

As a host of this group I should be doing  this stuff

Bah, trying to steal my job, I need to have something to do to keep me here Phil, I can't let you just take it for free. Ah, in all seriousness I don't think it's anything you should feel lousy about, personally I think the HGS works slightly better when it isn't the Host running it, makes it feel less like promotion of the group (as an overall system) and more like just featuring some sweet work. But hey, you guys already post discussions, leave comments, have conversations about every lore topic imaginable and answer questions, you already do plenty, let someone else to just a little tiny part.

Good points and exactly what I was thinking... Hmm, I might give both a shot a couple of times over the next month or so. Test out how both options work out and which I prefer. Though I still am up for hearing other opinions

Thanks a ton for this, DB! I've always been impressed by whatever you decide to include in your Gem spotlights, and I'm extremely grateful that you thought my post worthy of such attention.
