    Reman: Connection to other Emperors

    Written by The Mighty Deeb

    Introduction:

Who is Reman Cyrodiil? An important question that must first be examined before I can even begin to cover what has inspired his creation, or been inspired by his rule. In short, Reman Cyrodiil, is the greatest Hero of the 2nd Era, well at least for the races of Man. And two key events show how much of an impact he was on Cyrodiil and Tamriel as a whole.

The first, is his victory over the invading Akaviri Hordes during 1E 2703 where a force, said to have mainly been made of Tsaesci "Tamriel first faced an organized armada of Tsaesci, the so-called "Akaviri Snakemen", and met the challenge with a resounding victory in the Pale Pass of Skyrim." Pocket Guide to the Empire: 3rd Edition - Other Lands)

The other major event that can be attributed to Reman is actually ridiculous in scope, not only did he defeat the Akaviri Army, but he also managed to convince some of them to join as part of the Imperial Army.

When the Elves of the Summerset Isles took umbrage at what they perceived as a renewed human imperialism, Reman was forced to prove them right. In order to prevent the Elves from attacking the already weakened northern kingdoms, he offered the captive Akaviri Horde amnesty in his future dominions if they would serve as the nucleus of the Army of the Second Empire of Men (Pocket Guide to the Empire: 1st Edition - Cyrodiil)

This Akaviri force, was responsible for the protection of the Empire, well at least partially, they were a major determent for the Dunmer and Altmeri forces that were both about to attack the Empire in order to stop the expansion of Man. The new forces, not only forces that the Altmer hadn't fought in any major battles (They did fight Sload Pirates but nothing else seems to be recorded) but were nearly as strong as Reman's. This effectively doubled their strength and worked excellently in stopping any direct attack until the Empire could become even stronger.

    Shaping an Empire:

Reman's own dynasty lasted for two hundred years, and in that span it conquered all the kingdoms of Tamriel except for Morrowind. Indeed, the Dark Elven Morag Tong were the doom of Reman's heirs, and the death of the last true Cyrodilic Emperor heralded the beginning of the Common Era. PGE 1Ed

We have already seen the mythic importance Reman had on Imperial culture, now it is time to look at the more concrete impact he had and the legacy he left for it was his expansion after the victory at Pale Pass which united much of Tamriel under the Imperial flag, a feat only outdone by Tiber Septim centuries later.

The Impact the Akaviri had on the culture and lifestyle of the inhabitants of the Heartland is the subject of Axius Revan's discussion in Reman: Part Three. Yet for now it is just worth mentioning that Akavir  played a huge part in influencing the dress, motifs and styles of the Imperial Legion which we take for granted today. (PGE 1Ed)

Jutting out on a promontory of rock, it was like many other abandoned castles in northern Skyrim, remnants of Reman Cyrodiil's protective shield against the continent of Akavir Ice and Chitin

The defence of Tamriel against the Akaviri Invaders and the subsequent expansion Reman started is also responsible for many of the forts and castles dotting Skyrim and Cyrodiil's landscapes. Even though they fell into disrepair over the centuries, we can see their strategic importance even as long after the Reman Dynasty's fall as 4E 201 and the role they played in Skyrim's Civil War.

Arguably his most important contribution to the continuation of the Empire above and beyond his reformation of the Imperial Legion was the establishment of the ritual geas to the Amulet of Kings. (Varieties of Faith)

Lastly, there is the matter of the Akaviri Dragonguard which led to the eventual formation of the Blades under the Septim Dynasty and the significance of Dragonborn. That Reman I was the first documented of the legendary Dragonborn is a subject we touched on in Part One, but the relevance here is why this was important to the Akaviri as it hints that they had come searching for him:

the remaining Dragonguard, upon hearing the voice of Reman Cyrodiil, knelt and swore their lives to him, their conqueror and savior. Fragments of from late 1st era texts refer to the warriors dropping to their knees saying "we were not hunting" (or "did not intend", author - rough translation), continuing "we have been searching, for you." (Rise and Fall of the Blades)

The enigmatic way in which Reman stopped the Akaviri invasion, an event that still resonates even as late as the events of TES V Skyrim. Esbern says about Sky Haven Temple, "Look here. You see how the ancient Blades revered Reman Cyrodiil? This whole place appears to be a shrine to Reman. He ended the Akaviri invasion under mysterious circumstances, you recall."

    Conclusion

Reman's impact on history is as far reaching through time as 4E 201, eras after his death and the fall of his dynasty which marked the Interregnum. His influence on the Akaviri who, in turn, influenced the structure, tactics and motifs of the Imperial Legion is still visible today. Reman's establishment of forts acted as a bulwark of defence and paved the way for Tiber Septim's rise to power hundreds of years after his death. Reman I is still as relevant now as he was in the late First Era due to the presence of Alduin's Wall and the Prophecy of the Last Dragonborn written by the Akaviri Dragonguard who would eventually become The Blades.
