You see, the sword is a symbol of masculinity, virility, and fortitude. I chose steel specifically for the fact that it is strong, but brittle, just like the human psyche. The white snow acts as a counterpoint: the classical female innocence, acting as a proverbial womb, encompassing the cold bitter male steel. The blood is both a direct image of the fate of the sword's wielder, but more broadly, it is a representation of the loss of innocence borne from war. Note too how the background is out of focus, implying a disconnect from nature and the world at large: In war, people lose their connection to the world around them, creating a self-fulfilling cycle of demise and destruction. However, the sunset is a note of hope, paradoxically: It signifies the end of an era, and a chance for that snow to solidify, fully absorbing the sword and establishing a new slate of peace and prosperity. less
