None of you can fully understand

You cannot ever sway fates hand

    Imagine life continued after death

Having begun just after your last breath

You are stripped of your name

And see nothing will be the same

You walk among the living, never seen nor heard

Moving silently like a small bird

Having to lull young ones to sleep

Which cuts the living ever so deep

"Come with me." you say to the child

Its attitude towards you meek and mild

"But what of my mommy?" she asks when she sees her weep

"Do not worry" you say "come now, it's time for you to sleep."

The child grabs you by the hand

You cannot feel a warm touch, cold wind nor coarse sand

All that remains is your emotion

    Never ceasing, always flowing

You hear the mother yell "Death be damned!"

    The living will never understand

You're already damned with the worst fate you know

Not having a place to rest or go

Your feet fall silently upon the ground

As you walk, the child looks around

"Don't worry." you say "You'll be alright."

"Don't lose your way" you motion with your hand "and walk towards the light."

This build is going to be about playing "Death" but in a bit of a different way, in that you aren't necessarily evil or good. The poem above is something I wrote a little while ago, and I decided to make a build for "Death", when Death thinks of himself as the victim for not being allowed to be at peace after he died. Instead of his soul going to Aetherius or Oblivion, or even to Purgatory, he was forced to walk the world of the mortals for all eternity to reap souls and take them to the next life.

     Death

    Character Build

Race: Any human or elf will do, I chose Imperial just because I don't normally play as them.

Stones: Start with the Mage stone, this will help you level up a majority of your skills quickly. Switch over to Atronach when you feel you are ready to.

    Major skills:

Illusion: You'll be using this magic type a lot, many of your encounters will be started by either calming, enraging, or scaring small groups of people. You'll take every perk except for the "Master Illusion" perk.

One-Handed: Your only form of aggressive attacks. Very few perks are used here though, take "Armsman" to 3/5

Conjuration: This will be used primarily to punish souls you deem unworthy of being given a clean death. You send a tortured soul after them to torment and ravage their body. Go up to "Expert Conjuration" and take the middle branch up to "Twin Souls".

Enchanting: This is where most of your strike power comes from excluding the damage from sneak attacks. Take the full middle branch, "Enchanter" at 5/5, and the full left branch.

"But why, why is it my time to die? I have done nothing to deserve this... I still wish to live."

"I know, young-one, I am sorry, please, stop crying. Death, at least for you, is more of a blessing than a punishment."

"How? I feel so much pain, I will never get to see my loved ones again... How can you say this is a blessing?"

"You will feel emotional pain for some time, but it will fade away. And when it does, you will be happy again. You will never feel physical, or emotional pain, never have to fear for your life, all that will remain is peace and serenity. Being alive is more painful than being dead; constantly having to deal with anger  hate and sadness, those can cause more damage than any blade as they do not only harm your body, but your soul. I can guarantee to you, that you will see your loved ones again, none of their souls have been tainted by sin.

"But... but why must we die? Why do we clutch to life and pray we live long and happily when we all die in the end?"

"Because Life is a beautiful lie, and I am a painful truth..."

    Minor skills:

Sneak: You use this skill to move in closely to unaware people, and plunge one of your daggers into their body to send their soul to Aetherius, Oblivion or Purgatory.

Alteration: Mostly used to see what's around you with "Detect Life", "Detect Dead", and to escape from strong opponents with "Paralyze". Take everything except for "Mage Armor" and "Master Alteration".

Max Level: 53 (I know it's a little over what people typically use, so if there is enough negative feelings towards a higher level, I could rework the perks to lower it.)

Stat spread: Magika, Health, Stamina: 2/1/1

    APPAREL:

    Shrouded Hood

Robes of the Reaper (fortify conjuration&magika regen., fortify illusion&magika regen.)

Gloves of the Silent (fortify magika, fortify sneak)

Boots of the Lifeless (resist fire, resist frost)

Ring of the Deceased (fortify conjuration, fortify alteration)

Amulet of Understanding (fortify speech, fortify magika)

Blade of Justice (Stalhrim dagger, Shock damage+Magika damage) This is the blade you use for people whose souls you decide to send to Aetherius. It drains them of spiritual energies making them easier to send to the next life.

Blade of Damnation (Ebony dagger, Fiery soul trap+Absorb health) This is the blade you use for people whose souls you decide to condemn to Oblivion. You burn not only their flesh, but their soul, and send them on to the realm of fire.

Blade of Uncertainty (Glass dagger, Soul trap+Stamina damage) This is the blade you use for people whose souls are undecided upon. By pulling all physical strength from their body it allows you to simply pull out their soul and send it to Purgatory.

Spells: Detect Dead, Detect Life, Paralyze, Conjure Boneman, Conjure Mistman, Conjure Wrathman, Soul trap, Dread Zombie, Pacify, Rout, Frenzy, Invisibility.

Shouts: Throw Voice, Become Ethereal, Bend Will, Dismay, Drain Vitality, Marked for Death, Disarm

Special Items: Star of Azura and any soul gems you find. They'll help a lot with keeping your weapons charged.

Required quests: Dark Brotherhood, The Black Star, Civil war (Empire's side), The only cure (You feel sorry for the Afflicted and wish to relieve their suffering), Do all the "Temple" quests.

Optional actions: Become a Vampire or Werewolf. (I didn't see these as necessary for anything unless you go through Dawnguard and side with the Vampires.) Finish the rest of the Daedric quests.

    Special Moves

    Peaceful Death:

Sends a soul to Aetherius. Marked for Death+Pacify+Blade of Justice+Sneak attack.

Use marked for death on an opponent, then Pacify them to calm their spirit, and finally release their soul from its mortal form with the Blade of Justice.

    Tormented soul:

Tortures a persons body and soul before damning it to Oblivion. Dismay+Conjure Wrathman x2+Dread Zombie+Blade of Damnation+Sneak attack.

Use Dismay to have you enemy run away in fear as your Wrathmen chase him down and kill him. Then resurrect his body, trapping his soul in an enslaved meat suit, torturing it, and then send his soul Oblivion.

    Wayward Spirit:

Sends a soul to Purgatory. Disarm+Pacify+Blade of Uncertainty+Sneak attack.

Disarm to show them that no matter where their soul is destined to go, you cannot escape it. You Pacify them so that they aren't in distress as they die and then you release their soul with the Blade of Uncertainty.

    Gameplay/Roleplay

As Death, you are not evil or good, you do not kill because of petty things like hate or revenge. That is why you side with the Empire in the war, but kill the Emperor for the Dark Brotherhood. By doing so, you can kill the leaders of both the Empire and the Stormcloaks to keep yourself neutrally aligned. In regards to Paarthurnax, you kill him. While he ultimately sided with the mortals in the Dragon War, that doesn't excuse him for the atrocities he committed before hand.

You may kill civilians or guards should you choose it's their time, however, if you kill a civilian or guard, you MUST complete a "Bounty" mission for the hold in which they were killed to stay neutral with that hold. Also, should you choose to kill a civilian or guard, place 2 gold coins on their body and 1 red mountain flower. This is just to give the killing of a civilian or guard a little more of a role-play aspect to it by following old traditions of a rose and payment for the ferryman. If you finish a "Bounty" before killing a civilian or guard, you MUST kill one in the same Hold that the "Bounty" was finished.

    Hearthfire only:

In addition to killing civilians and Hold guards, you may also "kill" children (Idea courtesy of Artasqweroldy) by adopting them and sending them to your home. This fits in with the beliefs of some cultures in regard to "Death" and other related spirits, where the spirit takes care of the soul of a young child or infant until it is ready to move on to the afterlife.

When you are presented the opportunity to sneak up on a tough enemy, before engaging anyone, determine where you wish to send the "Boss" of the group, i.e. a "Bandit Chief" by picking on your own or (Idea courtesy of Artasqweroldy) roll a D20 to determine where to send them and use the corresponding dagger. The rest of the people around you should send to Purgatory, however, you may choose to send them to Aetherius or Oblivion if you wish.

Further more, as Death, you have respect for the dead and should not reanimate a persons body unless you used "Tortured Soul" on them, nor should you eat them by using "Ring of Namira". Bad or Good, everyone deserves to have their soul be at peace, that is, assuming they aren't sent to Oblivion.

While you owe your existence to Sithis, as the one who forced the fate of becoming a Reaper upon you, you favor the Divines over him, so pray at an alter each chance you get. It's the only way you can feel happy since your death, by communicating with the Divines and receiving one of their blessings.

    P.S.

This is my third build, so comment on what you think needs to be fixed or improved and I'll do my best to take care of it, let me know what you think of the poem as well, the only opinion I've heard about it I believe was a little bias so that would be appreciated as well. I altered the "Life is a beautiful lie" bit slightly to fit with the conversation, and after looking around, all I could find out about the quote was it was written by "Unknown".

I swear I've seen a death build before...

There are two builds I found related to this, one actually being called "Grim Reaper", but the play style for both are quite different from this one.

    Character Build: The Grim Reaper

    Character Build: The Spirit Reaper

I disagree with the whole heaven and hell aspect (I would have said Sovengarde and Onlivion instead) but its still cool

What's "Onlivion"? I've heard of Oblivion but not Onlivion.

It's good but you need a little more work. First of all it you've got some fairly large walls of text mostly the Gameplay and Equipment. Try adding a picture in each section. Also for me personally probably not the case for a lot of people I find it hard to read but hey I have horrible vision so whatever. Also your poem and backstory were both great and this is probably one of the best Death concept builds I've seen. And yeah change Hell at least to Oblivion to add more immersion but Heaven might work.

Sovengarde as I understood it was nearly exclusively Nord infact I'm pretty sure everyone there was one but I could be wrong about that last bit

I too disagree with the heaven and hell part - too much that I can't get past it.

And there are many places people of the ES universe may go after death, eg Argonians return to the Hist.

Roleplay/gameplay needs to be expanded on. As it stands it is just a nightblade. And I'd kind of recommend vampirism for your illusion, sneaking... And because you're supposed to be undead to be the grim reaper I think. Right?

Your special moves are very good. You could possibly think of a couple more good ones befitting the role play.

Read all the comments so far and I think I can easily take care of those things, I also noticed that I didn't put in the ring or necklace so I'll be taking care of those things today as soon as I can.
