The Ancient Nordic Pantheon

It is pretty cool though and I am slowly taking some of it into my headcanon. I didn't like Tsun being the Bear instead of the Whale but as Shor, Son of Shor has them switching places left and right I can accept it as a possibility.

Is that the only one that you are not a fan of?

I assumed one pantheon when I began my story, and some things are now different. I could get bent out of shape with it, but I really like the idea of the protagonist also making these discoveries as the story progresses. Like in the beginning Stuhn is the bear and Lorkhan is the snake, but as things progress, he is introduced to a lot of fox imagery, not snake imagery, and then he puts two and two together. I like this sense of being wrong and then finding the right answer.

He would be confused by Tsun too. LOL. But the Bear guarding the bones of his brother makes sense. Doesn't one of them die? I can't remember.

Yay, you found a cool solution to this, totally love it)))))) Who knows what those ancient Nords meant when they were building the tombs?))

Yeah, why shouldn't characters explore possibilities as well? Why do their assumptions necessarily have to be the right ones?

Oooh hey that's cool, I like the idea of Bear guarding the bones of the Whale

Exactly))) This make the story even more interesting)))))

It is cool. And somewhat sad.

Sort of. Remember this is the Modern Nordic Totemic Pantheon. That in itself goes against what we know and why this is just an exercise in "what ifs" -the Nords don't have a totemic pantheon any more.

So everything here is just hints at what might have been and, like Tom, it infuriates me that we got the Nine Divines instead of this rich and unique religion.

That said, I am trying in my WiP by using old sources like Children of the Sky and PGE1Ed to establish that there is plenty of room in the wilds of Skyrim for this sort of thing to still be living culture. I mean, how cool is some of the stuff here?

Nord heroes and clever men visit the Underworld all the time. They bear a symbol to show that they have, which garners much respect.

...the temples aren’t like those of the Imperials; as Hearth Gods, they are always homes to someone, and the highest-ranking female of that home is their de facto high priestess.

    This last one gets me:

The Testing Gods don’t really have temples – they are propitiated at battlegrounds or other sites where they caused some notable trouble

An ancient battleground upon which a Nord warrior invokes Orkey or Herma Mora for protection despite being enemy gods? He respects their strength, see. Or maybe the hero feels the long rolls of history in that place and uses the sign of the evil eye to ward off The Woodland Man? Either way works and brings a culture to life.

the Nords don't have a totemic pantheon any more

This is one of the things that feel strange to me. Is there any explanation to this? People don't usually change their gods without a big reason.

They go to Sovngarde all the time????? Something's definitely off here. Unless the Underworld isn't Sovngarde, but wjat is it then?

This seems even more weird to me...
