Profile: Joshua Hawk, Last of the Sioux

  • March 19, 2016

The Red Nation shall rise again and it shall be a blessing for a sick world; a world filled with broken promises, selfishness and separations; a world longing for light again.

I see a time of Seven Generations when all the colors of mankind will gather under the Sacred Tree of Life and the whole Earth will become one circle again.

In that day, there will be those among the Lakota who will carry knowledge and understanding of unity among all living things and the young white ones will come to those of my people and ask for this wisdom.

I salute the light within your eyes where the whole Universe dwells. For when you are at that center within you and I am that place within me, we shall be one.

Many rumors and myths float around the bars and pubs that dot the landscape of post-war America. Some are grounded in truth, while others are mere fabrications of hearsay and superstition. But in the case of this man, it can be difficult determining fact from fiction; in fact there are some who claim that "the guy named Hawk" doesn't even exist, and that alleged encounters with this enigmatic figure are simply cases of mistaken identity. After all, nobody has heard from the natives of America in years! In fact it was largely assumed that they'd all died out after the planet was wiped clean, and those who remained were summarily disposed of in the vaults! And in truth, they were...

    That is... all but one.

Enter the man himself: Joshua Hawk. And yes, despite word to the contrary, he is no mere superstition or wasteland bogeyman -- he, the very last of the Lakota Sioux, is as real as the war that ended it all. But there is more to this man than petty folklore and legend; to truly understand him as he is, we must go back to the very beginning: when he was born within the confines of the vaults.

Little is known about Joshua's early years; some say he was born to a pair of Lakota parents, while others have theorized that he was the son of a Lakota mother and a white father (though it has been confirmed that Joshua never actually knew his father, therefore indicating that perhaps the latter story is more true). Whatever the circumstances which brought him into the world, Joshua learned very quickly the depravity of the human mind when his mother was taken from him at the tender age of 5, in order to serve as the human test subject of numerous scientific theories. This would happen several more times over the years, and to the horror of little Joshua's eyes his mother's health gradually began to deteriorate. Ten years later she lay on the brink of death, doing all she could to provide for her son whilst enduring the horrors of the vaults. The radiation above had cleared by this time and the surface was safe to breathe again, but because of his mother's poor health Joshua chose to stay behind. And once again she was to be abducted for a final test... but this time was different.

This time, Joshua rose up and fought back.

With the strength of 10 men he lashed out at those that had abused his mother for ten long years. Taken completely by surprise, the men were dispatched quickly and ruthlessly... but in the ensuing chaos Joshua found that his mother had died, presumably as the result of a heart attack brought on by the sight of her boy putting himself at risk for her sake. Now alone in the world, Joshua made haste for the surface world and, at long last, beheld the gaze of the sun and the air outside. But this was not the world his mother often spoke to him about; this was a desolate wasteland that would surely claim his life if he was not cautious. Fashioning himself a tomahawk, Joshua set out into the world with the sole intent to survive and conquer whatever obstacles lay in his path... and so he did.

Spurred by the traumatic experiences of his youth, Joshua chose to live disconnected from society and to instead embrace the ways of the land, just as his forefathers had done. Naturally though, it didn't take too long for him to brush with the post-apocalyptic culture that had begun springing up around the United States, and because of his distrust of others (particularly those of Caucasian descent, as it was their people who abused his mother for so long) his knack for staying mostly out of sight resulted in him becoming an urban legend. Some would swear on their last bottle cap that they saw him drinking quietly at a bar, while others claimed to have almost met their end at his hands.

One such story tells of a bandit's encounter with Joshua Hawk; during a particular job in the wasteland, the bandit and his crew had abducted a young struggling family whose food supply had just been restocked. This particular member, much to the surprise of his cohorts, protested the ethics of doing this to a family who could not defend themselves and simply wanted to survive. The leader of the group responded by threatening the bandit's life... and then came the sound of rifle fire, and the leader dropped dead right there in the field. A shrill war cry pierced through the heavens and the rest of the bandits soon fell dead as well... except for the one. Instead of killing the bandit who had stood in the family's defense, Joshua approached him and instructed the man to help give back to the people he'd taken from. The bandit agreed, and was left utterly shaken by who he'd just talked to.

Personality-wise Joshua is very reserved and quiet. What few words he'll say in company, he'll say because they mean something and should be spoken. At heart he is something of a philosopher and a spiritualist, staying true to the ways of his ancestors despite the soulless husk that the world has become. Though he is in fact slow to violence, Joshua is more than capable of giving a good, hard beating if need be. Also, despite his reputation and lifestyle of being a recluse from society, Joshua has been known to help the occasional traveler in need by offering healthy food and water, or even shelter on occasion. So perhaps there is more to this indigenous warrior than meets the eye... but until the day comes when the world sees Joshua for what and who he truly is, he will always be known across the wasteland as "the guy named Hawk".

That concludes my very first Fallout character profile. What do you all think? How'd I do, stepping outside of my Elder Scrolls comfort zone?  Any lore criticism or points would be greatly appreciated, as I want Joshua's history to be as true to the lore as possible. Thanks for reading!

Wonderful! This is a great addition. I like the backstory and I don't think there are any contradictions in it. If you ever have time to update this, it'd be cool to hear about more of his wasteland deeds than the final paragraph.

    P.S. I loved that music

I could see about adding some updates.  It's why I reach out to the community here; you guys have such great ideas!

Also, yeah, thanks about the music.  I found the track completely by accident, and I thought it fit so perfectly with the style of Fallout (while also adding indigenous flair) that I absolutely had to put it to good use.
