Oblivion: Birthsign Stones

  • August 20, 2015

I guess that some of you know about Doom Stones that are scattered across Cyrodiil. For those who don´t know about them, this article is the right thing for you. I´ve decided to write a Guide for these Stones, known as Doom Stones. In this guide, I´ll write down what they do and how to easily find them. I am also interested in hearing from you whether you have ever used these stones or mostly forget about them; if you find them useful or completely useless.

    Doom Stones

These Stones give you a Greater Powers which mostly have Fortify Effects, but some of them have other useful effects. Greater Powers are spells that can be used "Once a Day". Once you use them, you have to wait 24 hours to use them again.

To obtain these Powers, you have to meet two requirements. The first is easy. You have to use the Stones at night. That means between 6AM and 6PM.

The other is Renown. Some stones require you to have a certain amount of Fame or Infamy. My understanding is that Fame and Infamy are cumulative as requirement for these Stones. So if a Stone requires 30 Renown and you have 15 Fame and 15 Infamy, your Renown is 30, so it will work.

(Renown can easily be gained by wearing the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal which gives you 100 Infamy.)

    Birthsign Stones

For these stones, you don´t need Renown, but you can pick just one stone. I´ll list their Spell Effects and show some pictures of their locations, and how to easily get to them. Note that I am using the UESP Map, because that one is the best in my opinion. It let me zoom, you know.

    Apprentice Stone

Void Seed – Fortify Illusion and Fortify Alchemy 20pts for 120 seconds.

I don´t find this stone very useful. Fortify Alchemy is very much useless and Fortify Illusion only reduces the cost of your Illusion spells for some time, although this is a least a bit useful.

There are two ways. You can either go directly south from Skingrad's west gate, or west, along the walls, from Skingrad Castle Gate.

    Atronach Stone

Arcane Well – Spell Absorption 30pts and Fortify Intelligence 10pts for 120 seconds.

Well, Spell Absorption always comes in handy when dealing with Mages. It reduces the damage you´ll take, and it will replenish your Magicka. That´s cool. Intelligence will increase your Maximum Magicka by a small amount. Combining it with the Atronach Birthsign will give you 80pts Spell Absorption.

As you can see, you have to get to Miscarcand first. Miscarcand is a huge Ayleid ruin very close to the road between Skingrad and Kvatch. From Miscarcand follow your map to Shardrock settlement and head directly north from there.

    Lady Stone

Lady´s Warding – Fortify Willpower and Endurance 20pts for 120 seconds.

Willpower increases your Magicka Regeneration and increases your Stamina by a small amount . Endurance also increases both your maximum health and stamina.

Just go west from the Anvil Docks, and the trail between rocks will lead you right to the stone.

    Lord Stone

Ysmir´s Scales – Resist Frost 50%, Fortify Heavy and Light Armor 10pts for 120 seconds.

Frost Resistance can come in handy from time to time, combining it with the Lord Birthsign will give almost complete resistance to frost. Fortify Armor doesn´t increase your Armor Rating by much, so it's not very useful.

The easiest way to reach the Lord Stone is to begin from Brina Cross Inn which is on the road between Anvil and Kvatch. Go directly north until you reach Nyriastare and from there, continue directly north.

    Lover Stone

Lover´s Bower – Fortify Personality and Luck 20pts for 120 seconds.

While Personality increases your Speech, Mercantile and Illusion, Luck increases every skill by  a small amount. This ability is best used when you have to persuade someone or you want to haggle for a good discount with a merchant. Personality and Luck combined will increase the skills needed for that.

The Lover Stone is near the Imperial Bridge Inn, just across the river. The inn is located near  the road leading from Cheydinhal to Leyawiin. It is pretty much directly east from Bravil, across the Niben River.

    Mage Stone

Magicka Manifold – Fortify Magicka 50pts 120 seconds.

Fortify Magicka 50pts is actually a pretty strong spell, because of the fact that Intelligence will not raise your Magicka pool as much as Fortify Magicka. It doesn´t have much use, but if you´re expecting a tough fight, it should let you prepare for it.

This one is a little bit harder to find. When you travel along the road from Cheydinhal to Leyawiin and you cross the first bridge with Crestbridge Camp near it, you want to head north-east from there. The stone itself is a little bit south of the Ayleid ruin of Hame.

    Ritual Stone

Mara´s Milk – Restore Health 100pts on Self.

Mara´s Mercy – Restore Health 150pts on Target.

One of the more useful stones. It gives you two abilites, one to heal yourself and one to heal others. Characters without Restoration or any Magic at all can benefit greatly from this Stone.

It is located near Nocturnal´s Shrine, directly east of Fort Redman. To get there, you can either travel south from Bravil and cross the bridge or travel along the eastern bank of the Niben River from Leyawiin.

    Serpent Stone

Cobra´s Dance – Paralyze 5 seconds and Damage Health 4pts for 20 seconds on Target.

A good "oh crap" ability when you encounter a strong enemy.

To reach this Stone, go south from Leyawiin East Gate. Try to go south-east but heading more south than east until you encounter an Ayleid Well. Then continue in the same direction.

    Shadow Stone

Fingernail Moon – Chameleon 15% for 120 seconds.

Well, Chameleon is good, but only 15% isn´t very much. But nevertheless, sneaky characters can use this to increase their chances of succesfully sneaking around tougher enemies.

Same as the Mage Stone, hit the Yellow Road leading from Cheydinhal to Leyawiin and once you cross Crestbridge, continue directly east.

    Steed Stone

Hellride – Fortify Speed and Acrobatics 20pts for 120 seconds.

Not a bad ability if you want to increase how high you can jump or how fast you can run. If it was Fortify Athletics instead of Acrobatics...well, that would be Hellride.

Travel from Cheydinhal until you see a small pool to your left. It is right to the east from that pool.

    Thief Stone

Cheater´s Nip – Fortify Agility and Luck 20pts for 120 seconds.

Sneak, Marksman and Security are skills that will be increased by Agility and a minor boost from Luck too.

This Stone is located right next to the road that leads from Bruma to the Imperial City. You can´t miss it.

    Tower Stone

    Master´s Hand – Fortify Armorer 20pts for 120 seconds.

Warden Key – Open Hard Lock in 15ft on Target.

Fortify Armorer isn´t that bad. While it lasts, your hammers won´t break as fast and you will repair your items' health more efficiently. Open Hard Lock is a pretty good ability to have, especially when you don´t have Alteration or Security.

Best way is to swim directly south from the Imperial City Waterfront. It is on the small island between two bridges.

    Warrior Stone

War Cry – Fortify Strength 20pts, Fortify Blunt, Blade and Hand to Hand 10pts for 120 seconds.

Useful for anyone who wants to increase his damage output in melee.

Go under the bridge that leads to Skingrad Castle and follow the road, until you see a trail leading south. Follow it and it will lead you directly to the Stone.

Oh wow, can't believe I hadn't seen this. This will definitely be helpful when I kick my own ass into playing more Oblivion

Nice guide, though I can certainly see some of these being MUCH more useful than others. I'll keep this in mind if I ever pop in the old Oblivion disk again.

Why didn't I comment last time I saw this?

I remember stumbling across the Warrior Stone for the first time, and it was the first birthsign stone I'd found.  I abused the hell out of War Cry for the rest of that playthrough.

I hear you. Paired with Heaven Stones it´s really one helluva abuse there. Shame I never got to making guide for Heaven Stones. They certainly are more useful than Birthsign Stones.

I see what you mean.  Just been researching the Heaven Stones (Seems I only ever found the Jone stone and never used it), and there are some rather powerful combos.

War Cry + Jode's Blood = Fortify Health 40 pts, Fortify Strength 20 pts, Fortify Blade, Blunt and Hand to Hand 30 pts for 120 seconds.  That's an incredible boost to your combat level.

And then there's Gates of Aetherius + Magicka Manifold.  That's Fortify Magicka 100 pts and Resist Magic 20% for another 120 seconds.  Makes a god "Oh, heck no!" panic button when you're low on magic and out of potions.

I love that there are still things about this game I never knew, despite it being the only game I played for a solid year.

On a side note, I see that the Doom Stones in general can be used to get spell effects for enchanting and spell-crafting.  Would make for an interesting playthrough, being reliant on the Stones for your magical knowledge.
