Eris Hawkhart, known locally in Cyrodiil as Eris the Swift, began her life as the daughter of a noble family living in the city of Northpoint in High Rock. And as is the customary noble life in High Rock, Eris found herself forcibly stuffed into the political power feuds that her family engaged in with other nobles; according to Northpoint locals, in fact, it was said that the Hawkhart family was known to be particularly arrogant in its pursuit of diplomatic power, having resorted to everything from scam artistry to assassinations just to get their way. But then there was Eris, whose lifestyle differed both from her family and from her fellow kinsmen: where they studied magic, she practiced athletics; while they pined over diplomacy, she obsessed over exploring the world around her... and this would alienate her from her pompous family, who simply could not understand what could possibly be more important than a seat of authority.

At the age of 14, Eris began to make more bold gestures of rebellion against the lifestyle of her peers; she would occasionally vandalize portraits of her ancestors by painting humorous details on them, such as exaggerated mustaches and witty yet insulting messages challenging the stuck-up attitude that Breton nobility had become known for. She was never caught in the act, although her family always accused her of defacing the "good name" of their nobility thanks to her open dislike of High Rock's diplomacy. Over the years, the rift between Eris and the Hawkhart family continued to grow, until one fateful night when it finally hit its peak...

Eris' life didn't take a turn toward the criminal until she was 18, when she crossed the path of a burglar fleeing from the hands of the authorities. Without a word the burglar tossed his sack of loot into Eris' arms, then vanished as the local guards closed in on her. Despite her protesting that she was innocent, she nevertheless found herself locked up and tried for the crime of theft. And her noble family, eager to be rid of the oddball of their lineage, refused to testify on her behalf, therefore Eris was sentenced to 10 years in prison... but on the night that she was thrown in her cell, a curious figure approached her barred window: the burglar that had crossed her path the other night.

He introduced himself as a man named Sergius Blackwell, an Imperial thief hailing from the heartland of Cyrodiil. After humbly apologizing for the setup, explaining that he'd tossed her the bag without a thought and felt guilty for framing an innocent young lady, he offered to compensate her troubles by springing her from prison and allowing her to follow him back to Cyrodiil. She was hesitant at first, but at the same time she knew she had nothing to lose in her homeland. And so, after a daring escape from Northpoint's prison, Eris and Sergius made their escape from High Rock, to Hammerfell, and finally to Cyrodiil where Eris settled down in the Imperial City.

Once in Cyrodiil, Eris considered starting a new life for herself. Now that she was freed from the burden of Breton nobility, she could pursue virtually any avenue of life that she desired... but as hard as she tried to find honest work in the Imperial City, certain thoughts kept creeping back into her head: how strangely alluring Sergius Blackwell was, and how thrilling it was to escape from High Rock right under the nose of the Empire itself. It gave her the strangest feeling, to have faced such peril and come out of it alive, relying only on her wits, her speed, and her quick thinking. She wanted to know that feeling again, and in her eyes there was only one way to do it, and only one man to ask for the chance. Upon meeting Sergius again, she pulled him aside and discreetly asked a favor of him: to educate her in the ways of thievery.

Now Eris lives the life of a street thief, picking pockets and pulling major heists simply for the thrill of the risk she takes each night. Presently a Shadowfoot for the Thieves Guild, Eris has fully moved on from the stuffiness of her upbringing and embraced the dangerous life of a criminal, wherein she feels far more at home; after all, in the company of Cyrodiil's Thieves Guild, there are no egos or political debacles to be concerned with. There is only the thrill of the heist, the companionship of her guild mates, and the love of gold. And for Eris, that works just fine.

Nice! I'm glad to see discussion types from other groups are coming to Classics. And what a good start!

Is my Oblivion profile the first of its kind on the site? If so, I'm honored to have contributed!  But either way, I'm glad to have made progress on the Blog.

  • May 15, 2015

As far as I know, you are indeed the first.

Edit: By the way, I think the RP:Profile tag is reserved for the roleplaying group. We'll be making tags for different kinds of discussion soon.

Huh, then I guess I've made Blog history!!  And thank you for the tip about the tags.

I remember that there was one profile before, but that doesn´t matter. There is one here now and it is great. I hope that this will help people with making their own.

I just read it quickly, Markus, but it looks really interesting. I´ll read it properly in an hour and then I´ll give you my full report.

To be honest, this got me pretty much hyped out for your new story regarding this character.

While being black sheep in noble family is normally a cliché, that rebellious side of Eris works really well here. I had smile on my face when I read that about vandilizing family paintings with moustaches.

Encounter with Sergius seemed pretty good, but what strikes me how did he know she was noble? Maybe because of dress? "he'd never expected a noble Breton family to allow one of their own to be so callously locked up" I mean, you run to a completely foreign girl and you throw her your stolen goods hoping they won´t arrest her? This seems little odd to me.

The rest is great, I like how you explained her choice to become thief. The thrill of heists is addictive, right? I´m looking forward to reading the complete story, Markus.

Ah, must've missed that bit about how he knew she was a noble.... um, well, maybe her nice clothes gave her away? ^^" I mean in High Rock there's a strong contrast between the rich and the poor. Meh, I'll see about fixing that plot hole in the future.

And yeah, I know, it's a cliche. In fact it's a cliche I've used more than once, I've come to realize; Rikka Northwing and Arabella Blackwell are both technically black sheep, each handling the situation in different ways. ... I need to think of more varied backstories.

Thanks for the critical points and the overview!

No problem, Markus. I have knack for these things. Well, regarding stories. Not so much about anything else

I don´t know what kind of guy Sergius is but is he that kind of "nice" thief? Because if he - let´s say - dumped that stash on her just to save his skin and then had some regrets about that, it might be much more believable.

I'll be making that edit right now, actually.  That is the angle I'm going for, with Sergius being an honorable "gentleman thief" sort of character. So it would definitely speak more about his character if he showed up to spring her out as repentance for framing her.
