What was that ONE book that permanently changed your perception

There is this nasty little novel called House of Leaves. It's basically about a small door in an ordinary-type house that leads to an eternal series of tunnels, that are complete and utter blackness. The passageways also shift and disorient. It is written as a sort of journal.

A few days after reading this book, I was asleep upstairs when I heard my phone ringing downstairs. I lived in the pitch blackness that is rural Virginia. Well, about halfway down the stairs I realized that I was in total, complete dark and then this alarming thought "what if I never find the kitchen and am wandering in this ebony hell forever." All of a sudden I panicked and began tearing down the steps, fleeing for my life. I HAD to find the doorway when SMACK!!! OW!!!! OWWWW!!! F*CK!!!!! I ran as hard as I could right into the foyer wall. Needless to say, I found the kitchen and an ice pack for my face.

Soooo, what book made you hit the proverbial (or not so proverbial in my case) wall....
