The Adventures of Kaitlyn Stonewater - Part Four

  • I met up with Tolfdir and the class at Saarthal. We poked around a bit and found some enchanted jewelery, some smithing items, and ingredients for potions. I found a magic infused camera that Tolfdir let me keep! I'm real excited about that!

I can place the camera wherever I want and it'll float there so I can be in the pictures too. Amazing! Now I can take pictures of this breathtaking country I keep talking about. Words can only describe so much.

So one of the items, a necklace, I found in Saarthal triggered a trap. It was hanging on the wall and when I took it down metal bars came up out of the floor and locked me in this little room. Tolfdir ran over and suggested I try using my magic to see if that would let me out. After some trial and error I had to put the necklace on and when the wall hummed I blasted it with my new fire spell. The wall broke open, the metal bars came down and off Tolfdir went with me trailing behind.

We came to an enclosed room with stone coffins in it. This is where I came across an apparition. Tolfdir couldn't see it, but the person who appeared said he was from the Psijic Order and he needed my help. He also said that I was headed down a path where I would do either great things or terrible things. Cryptic! And this guy needs my help? So why tell me I could end up doing terrible things?

Once the apparition went away the coffins broke open and these Draugr stepped out and attacked us. They are like mummies. Skeletons wrapped in dried, tight flesh, but somehow more disgusting and terrifying. After we defeated them we noticed one of the coffins was open in the back and a path lead further into Saarthal. I don't know what we intended to find in there but we just kept going. Battling draugr after draugr, picking up a few trinkets along the way.

After what seemed like hours of exploring we walked through a door, and there floating and spinning and glowing was this orb. It had writing on it that I couldn't read, nor could Tolfdir. As we descended the steps to get a closer look we noticed a draugr sitting on a throne in front of an alter. The alter had another one of those draugr laying on it. Looked like some sort of sacrifice that went awry. But what we failed to take into consideration was that the throne draugr might stand up and attack us. Which it did!

He attacks us with both weapons and magic. I summoned my flame atronach for some extra fire power and douse him with my flame spell but he seemed almost resistant to it. It's like nothing could touch him. Tolfdir tells me to distract him while he tried something with the orb. Breaking out the trusty mace I still carried from the shipwreck and my lightning spell I fire and swing away. Swinging almost aimlessly at first but it didn't take me long to get the hang of it. The lightning seemed to have no effect on him too. Whatever Tolfdir was doing to the orb it seemed to work though. The draugr was weakening. Finally with a few lasts whacks of my mace the draugr perished.

I searched the body looking for evidence of what the orb might be when I found a Writ of Sealing. It banished Jyrik Gauldurson to a fate much worse than death. He was locked away in this tomb under Saarthal for, according to the paper, being a murderer and betrayer. He was sealed away to be forgotten.

Tolfdir had then remembered something about a legend of the Gauldur brothers. He suggested I check out the book on it from the college library if I wanted to learn more. But first he wanted me to bring word to Arch Mage Aren about the orb we found.

Continuing on through the rest of the ruins I enter a small cavern. There I am face to face with a huge curved stone wall with what looks like a dragon head on the top of it. It looks like there are runes all over the wall and one section is glowing. As I get closer, the runes get brighter and I can hear chanting. I think it's in my head! My vision goes dark all but for the rune, which turns out to be a word. It's like my mind knows this word somehow, but I can't quite remember what the word means or how I even know it. I feel a little dizzy after the chanting stops and my vision comes back, but otherwise I appear to be fine.

I have no idea what that was all about, but I don't have time to find out. Not until I talk to the Arch Mage, then I'll find someone who can tell me what just happened!

Thanks Christopher!  Yeah I figured the whole camera thing would be a bit weird, and a lot of people wouldn't necessarily like it, but I wanted to add it anyway. I was hoping once I added pictures it would take away from the word camera itself. Since a lo...  more
