Dezak the Assassin - Prologue Part 2 - Trial by Fire

  •                I threw an invisibility spell over myself as a jumped and rolled to the left. Four arrows skimmed passed where I was not half a second ago. The two heavy armoured guards took position by the windows before I could get there. One more guard took their place at the door. Now I'm really fucked. I sat in the corner, shadows keeping me hidden from the eight sets of eyes looking for me. "Show yourself assassin, or we burn the building down. Your Dark Elf blood my make you resistant to fire, but that won't stop you from burning to death." He wasn't wrong there. "If you surrender, we won't kill you."

I had no choice. While I might have been able to escape the fire, odds are they would have a barricade of guards waiting for me. And I can't keep this invisibility up forever. I stepped out of the corner and the shadows slipped off me like water. I let my daggers fall to the flood and raised my hands above my head. The guard at the door rushed up behind me and put snapped a pair of shackles to my hands, none too kindly may I add. "Smart choice Elf," the captain said. The smile was gone from his face and he was concentrating very hard on me.

"How does one get into the line of work as an assassin? Doesn't it weigh heavily on your conscience?" His questions confused me more than anything that's happened yet. Though he seemed generally interested in what I would respond with. I decided I had nothing to lose by answering him.

"You don't choose to be an assassin. It chooses you. I was born into a group of assassins and was raised as one. I have learned nothing in my life but the art of killing. My conscience is fine, when you live with something your whole life, you learn to accept it as it is." He didn't say anything for a bit. Just stared at me.

"So you believe you are doing no wrong by killing these people? And what of the rest of your group?" He sat down on the bed behind him waiting for my answer. I didn't know what to do! Sithis help me! How did this happen? What am I going to do? Nothing came to mind, so I answered his questions.

"Correct, assassins have been around since the beginning of civilization. Their presence is necessary in this world. As for the rest of my kind, there are next to none remaining. As far as I know, I am the last remaining assassin in Cyrodiil." He sat there a continued to look at me with those inquisitive eyes for some time. Suddenly he stood up.

"Contrary to your beliefs, murder is murder. And as such, it must be punishable." I looked into his eyes once more and saw something I didn't expect, regret. Or something similar. "Take him to the dungeon."

The cold Bruma air pricked at my back as I was taken to the keep of the city. I was lead down to their cells, they removed my cuffs and locked the door behind me. After the guards left, the captain walked up to the bars of my cell. "I don't know why but I regret having to lock you in here." His eyes still held that same regretful look, I nodded. "Wait a couple hours, the guards are less aware when it's late. Leave Cyrodiil, don't come back. Or you will be killed." Next thing I knew, he was pressing a lockpick into my hands. I didn't know what to say. I just stared at him as he marched back up the stairs.

Staring at the pick in my hands, I couldn't believe what just happened. I don't even know the name of the captain, yet he still helped me. It could be a trap, I thought. But then again, what did I have to lose? I guess my choice was made. I slept for a couple hours and woke up to dead silence. No guards anywhere in earshot, so I went to picking the lock. It popped open fairly easy. Just like that, I was free. Well almost I still had to get out of there. I took my first step out of the cell, and I saw the light from the guards torch coming down the stairs. It was now or never. The shadows slipped over me as a made my way deeper in to the keep.

That was my original idea :p but I figured this would be a way to introduce more of his character and use some of this to help with the story further on! :)
