Radiant Story

  • I thought it would be interesting to talk about Radiant Story and the pros and cons of having it in Skyrim.
So first of all, Radiant Story will allow the game to virtually never end because we will have an endless amount of quests becoming available all of the time. If we haven't visited a dungeon recently then maybe, just maybe, that orc you know down the street from your home might offer you a quest to go into that dungeon and recover a lost artifact he once owned. Or you might be walking down the road heading towards Riften and a helpless old woman is running away from bandits, crying for someone to help her. You decide to save her and she offers you a reward for doing so. These are just a couple examples of the endless amount of content we will be given because of the new Radiant Story.

But, there is one small problem, in my opinion. We may get new quests to do this and that, but after hours and hours of doing these random quests, wouldn't they get repetitive? I mean, lets just say you have finished a majority of the side quests and the main quest of Skyrim, and a large amount of the quests you are being offered are Radiant Story quests. Don't you think that some of the quests would start to feel very similar after awhile? There's only so much random quests you can obtain, and after you have done a large amount of them don't you think you would start noticing them feeling alike in some way?

To be honest, I really hope that is not that case. I really hope that there are many, many different kinds of quests that can be started with Radiant Story, but lets face it, wouldn't they start feeling similar sooner or later? Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to make a huge rant about this and I am definitely not complaining. I am really excited about Radiant Story. In fact, I think it is going to be one of the best new features that Skyrim will have. But I just really, really hope that the quests do not get repetitive.

So what do you guys think? Are you hoping that there will be many different kinds of quests that Radiant Story will offer? Or do you think that they will get repetitive after doing so many of them? I am very interested in the communities opinion, and I would like to know if I am the only one who feels this way. I certainly hope I am wrong, and that there will be limitless possibilities with the new, Radiant Story.

I agree, but it is better with too many quests than too few quests, right?

For the most part, Dovakiin's interpretation was mine, as well.  Based on an explanation I heard from Pete or Todd, it takes a standard quest and changes who offers it to you, where you have to go, and which monsters you face.  I am not at all convinced i...  more

Bethesda has said that you will not be able to tell it is a radiant quest. that it is blended and designed to be "unnoticeable". My thoughts are that it is smaller and less impacting than we are giving it credit. I am sure it will make the game longer and...  more

I'm trying not to get super-hyped for the Radiant Story, largely because we had a lot of hype about Radiant AI before Oblivion and it turned out to be only a pale shadow of what was mooted.
There's a fair few 'if's and 'buts' floating around in what...  more

I agree; it is my understanding that quest tweaking and deciding what quests get offered by which NPC's is one of the major Radiant Story features.  But that is not the only feature or advance over the version of Radiant AI that shipped with TES IV:Oblivi...  more

The more I think about it, the more it may be possible to have infinite quests of some sort.  It would be neat if, say, you go to someone that gives you a map with marker (denoting a camp, or dungeon), and you have to go there and kill the 'mark'.  This s...  more

It seems to be a little bit of both. We will see some quest tweaking in the sense of the quest being tailored more to the way you play, but we will also be seeing some new quests being created as we play.

I agree, there really is no telling until we see it in action, if we can even notice the subtle changes at all. I honestly understood it as 'tweaking' quests too, tailoring the enemies to your combat style, for example.

Below is some information about Radiant Story from The Elder Scrolls Wiki site. I removed some irrelevant sentences.

"Radiant Storytelling appears to be a feature that Bethesda is using in their engine for Skyrim that acts as a narrator for you...  more

Well, how they have it work is how you play through out the game. Radiant story means the game changes around you as you progress so in reality you will be given quests on how you go about things so it will constantly change because of the actions you tak...  more
