Argonians in Skryim - by Tell-Tale-Tail

  • I was sitting in a corner, at a bar in Whiterun.  At a table, a short distance from me, an Argonian was speaking to a small group of people.  This is what I overheard. - RuneRed.

I hear people say, ‘Argonians in Skyrim – they cannot survive the cold’ or ‘Argonians in Skyrim – that is stupid, doesn’t everyone know they are cold-blooded’ and so forth.  Maybe they do it in jest, maybe in anger; both from ignorance.  Ignorant of the Hist.

I think the biggest argument I hear about Argonians in Skyrim, is that we are reptiles.  Reptiles cannot live in the cold – yet we are here in Skyrim.  Do you not believe what you see; sometimes Tell-Tale-Tail gets confused.  I do realize there is a resemblance of Argonians to reptiles, but it is just a resemblance.  We have scales like a reptile, we must be a reptile.  We have gills like a fish, we must be a fish.  We live in water and on land, we must be an amphibian.   And during the time that we are female, we have noticeable breasts – mammary glands, so we must be mammals. We are none of those, we are argonian.  It is the Hist that makes us who we are.

I heard the Hist described as sentient trees.  Although to an outsider, I can see how it may seem that way.  But to say the Hist are trees would be akin to saying a Breton was a monkey, or a Khajiit a lion.  But it is more than that, much more. The Hist are us, we are them.  They give us our
soul, and we return to the Hist when we die, to be reborn again some day as an Argonian.

On our naming day, we injest the sap from the Hist, and we are changed.  Appearance of an Argonian varies greatly,   Did you know some of us appear human, while others have wings?  The Hist makes our people hardy, we don’t get sick, poisons don’t affect us like it does you – do you really think a little cold will bother us, warm-blood?

Now you may think, 'Ah, we are warm-blooded, so Argonians must be cold-blooded.'  You assume  there are only two types of blood.  No, Argonians are not cold-blooded.  Have you not been listening… we are the people of the root; it is the sap that runs in our veins.  I still hear some of you arguing.  ‘If you are not ‘cold-blooded’, why are most of your people confined to the warm lands of Black Marsh.  Your people were here before the Aldmer first started exploring – seems like you would have major settlements everywhere or least we would see ruins.’  Again you do not understand the Hist – when we are near the Hist, we are at peace – we feel a connection to it.  This connection lessens the further we are from Black Marsh. The reason we do not usually leave isn’t the climate, silly warm-blood; Leaving, *sigh*, leaving, it makes us lonely.
