Sigurd's Saga, part five

  • Sovnegarde holds no place for cowards.  As soon as the thief's name was called, he made a run for it, spineless wretch didn't make it twenty feet.  A priestess of Arkay approached the headsman's block and had just started our last rites when one of the young warriors shoved his way past the guards on his way to the block, interrupting her in the process.  There was a proud fire in his eyes as the axe came down in a graceful arc.  As my own thoughts trailed to Sovnegarde, far off, beyond the mountains, a faint roar rang out. "What was that?" one of the guards pondered, scratching his chin and staring up at the skyline. "Nothing. get back to the matter at hand." the officer snapped, but no sooner had she finished, another roar rang out across the sky, a roar I knew all to well: a thuum of old.  "Next! the nord in the rags!" bellowed the officer, shaking my mind from the past, I looked around still trying to pinpoint the sound, "I said, next prisoner!"  The bitch was starting to irritate me, a dozen words of power coming to mind, but before I could organize my thoughts, the soldier who showed us a margin of kindness had led me to the block, and pressed me down.  If only poor Olaf could see me now, I chuckled inwardly, I could see the wizened healer performing his rage induced spasm, spewing spittle and disgust for wasting his talents by getting myself killed, it almost made dying again worth it. As I watched the headsman raise his axe for the first, and final stroke, a black form winged in from the horizon, a dragon. Here. In Skyrim.  Those beasts were wiped out an age ago when the world-eater was banished, so long ago. But none of that mattered now, this dragon had decided that the perfect perch was the tower, not ten feet in front of me.  The soldiers stationed on top were instantly crushed, never knowing what killed them, as the weight of what was happening seeped into the stunned minds of all present, the beast let out a mighty roar of raw, pulsating energy, followed by a searing gout of flame, incinerating everything in its path.  Amidst the confusion, I managed to roll from the block, and was picked up by the friendly warrior from the cart, "Come on kinsman!" he yelled over the utter chaos, "the gods won't give us another chance!"  with that, I followed him into the remaining tower.

No, do not feel ashamed...the game is just that good, so it is ok to play it multiple times!

What makes these entries interesting to read is the perspective of the main character, as this is part of the game that we have all played many, many times.  You succeed in adding Sigurd's viewpoint very nicely, and keeping the description short and sweet.
