book or movie?

  • When playing epic RPGs, I think of them as a book being written, or a movie being produced, and I'm the main character. That's why it's important to me to (if able) create my avatar to resemble me, and also to have a "code of ethics" that my avatar follows as he goes through the game. I would much rather spend two to three hours playing Skyrim and crafting my own story than watching a movie. How do you approach the game?

Gate Keeper, there is no glory in war - there is ugliness and brutality.  You are entitled to your opinion, and to voice that opinion.  However, I resent that you refer to our military as "semi trained halfwitts".  When I flew with the Air Force, our prim...  more

I have no idea, I get totally immersed and forget all around me.  I always found that type of immersion easier in a book, but when I'm controlling the main character, it's different.  Madison mentioned a choose your own adventure book, I loved these, but ...  more

Thanks for the comments - excellent descriptions of what I was trying to put into words! Vix the "puppet master" is an excellent point - however, I like to use my puppet as an escape mechanism, much like a book or movie. I doubt I'll be dungeon crawling o...  more

Hmm, for games like Skyrim you can move at your own pace, much like a book, but it's also an audio-visual experience, much like a movie.
Games exist in my mind as their own type of experience.  I suppose I could most accurately describe my approach...  more

I will appoach Skyrim with a "mind and consciousness" consisting of 20% Robin Hood, 10% the nord from the release trailer, 10% Hemingway, 10% Tintin and 50% myself... hmm yes that's how i'll think of it

I remember those adventure books that you made choices in and you had to turn to a certain page so fun.
