Journal of Avidius the Wood Elf 4: Fresh Opportunities

  • Life is good! My petty luck has changed. While my new friends go on and on about their lack of fortune, meeting the Guild was the thing that turned my luck right! But I honor them and let them have their superstition.

My arrival in Riften wasn’t that cheerful. I went to find Maven Black-Briar, who I hoped to have some useful connections to me. She wasn’t difficult to find, she seems to be well known in the city. The first dirty Nord I met already warned me to stay in good conditions with her. I met her in Black-Briar Meadery and introduced myself, but she couldn’t be less interested. I tried a few times with a sharper tone, but she refused to see my situation and potential.  I was comfortless and shocked by her behavior.

I dawdled to the market district. There I met a gentleman called Brynjolf, who suggested a small deal. I was to help him to teach a merchant to mind his own business. This sounded fair and I agreed for a price. Brynjolf created a distraction and I arranged few things on a background. Brynjolf was rather impressed with my actions, and suggested some more connections with his fellows. So I met the Guild.

So all is well. Except that I’m on my way to Windhelm. I hate that city. Some centre of Nord revolution! What an outdated rat hole, worse than Riften by far. The idea that the Nord live in the viable parts of the city, and other races share the spare corners is outrageous! I mean, I do agree it is sometimes convenient that better people have their own districts, but these Nords sure are not the better people.

But my stay in Windhelm will be brief. I have a small errand to run for the Guild, and once I’m there, I’ll may catch up with latest rumors. Then I’m back to Riften for more important business. I’ll go to see the Jarl and ask to buy a property of the city. Thanks to my transaction with the Guild I can now afford it easily! The first reason why I need a place of my own, is my new connection with the Guild. While others may think their work won’t bear the daylight, I agree with their deity: business is business. And I’m glad to do it. But just in case it’s good to appear as a honourable citizen.

The second reason is more personal: I’m in love! I just left Solitude with heart full of pain and joy. Her name is Taarie. She is slender, confident and capable trader, and she runs a fine clothing store with her sister. Everything she touches turns into gold, so does her voice and her complexion. She is noble and strong, far from common rabble. Although she criticize my outfit, she does that with a gentle tone in her voice.

I’m planning to ask her to marry me, I can make the arrangements while in Riften. And for that I need a house. As a fine lady she cannot agree to someone without a property. I wish the property would be that from Solitude, but at the moment I cannot afford it. But I will, later on. She will understand! Next time we’ll see, she will meet a house-owner dressed in velvet, gold and jewelry.

Well yes, love is a complicate thing. I finally found a perfect match for Avidius. But Taarie refused, time and time again :o

At least one of those sisters found somebody. A shining testament to the power of true love, I guess. Good luck, Avidius... you might need it.

Of course Avidius had to fall in love with one of the most snobish conceited NPC in the game! He just has his own way of seeing things. And she's rich, also, and that always help - business is business.

Well, love is a bit blind in this case. I wouldn't really call Taarie so slender, but in the eyes of beloved... And she never stops insulting you're outfit, even if you were the one she gives :D
