Journal of Avidius the Wood Elf 6: Wordless

  • O Astrid, how did it ever come to this...!

I’m wordless, speechless, full of sorrow and disgust, thrown to the limits of my sanity.

Well this truly is a long story, and it all comes down to Taarie. That stubborn elf made no reaction when I came to her, wearing the amulet of Mara. I had everything, the wealth, the fortune and a house, and she still thinks she’s so much better than me. I was utterly devastated, heartbroken and disappointed. I don’t really recall what happened during the days after Taaries rejection. I had some drinks, paid a carriage driver to take me somewhere and found my self in Windhelm. The mixed, distorted thoughts flew around in my head. I had to make more coin, I thought, I had to be able to buy a property from Solitude, that would be the only way to get Taarie. Working with the Guild wasn’t enough, it would never make enough gold.

I had a few more drinks in Candlehearth Hall, then in New Gnisis cornerclub, and then I was in front of the boy who wanted to give me a family treasure for a favor. All was still rather murky as I travelled to Riften to fulfill the bargain. There’s no words to describe my madness, when I found out the “family treasure” was a plate, pretty worthless plate. I had to flee as the guards thought I was for peril to townsfolk. Maybe they weren’t wrong.

I stayed that night in Braindwood Inn. Astrid found me there. And that was when events really kicked off. She took me to meet my new family. They comforted my disoriented state of mind, sent me on missions and paid generously. I realised this was the path towards citizenship of Solitude, and the heart of Taarie. So I was eager. I was part of overwhelming whirl of events that stretched out to accomplish the enormous task... The biggest thing you can imagine!

But something went wrong, something really small, so tiny you couldn’t see that coming. And after that horrible night at the Sanctuary, after endless fight, flames, I found you like that... Naked and burned. O Astrid, how did it come to this...

There is no amount of drink to make me forget. I’m fleeing, but there’s no place to hide me from what I saw. I have her heart in my hand but no soul of my own.

Hmm, Avidius is deeply in the affairs of dark brotherhood, but that story is mostly left untold, as it is far from his ideals of being honoured, respected and skilled merchant. This is the most cryptic of his journal pages, and it could have been clearer,...  more

So, that's the end of his love affair with Taarie. I can feel he's heartbroken - she was not only beautiful, but also very rich - though I really can't see him meddling with the Dark Brotherhood business. I hope this "long story" will be told soon enough.
