Writers Discuss - Research (#24)

Will not lie, your advice on those gamplay-ish sections really helped. And I think those sections read way better now. Added some much needed humor to several chapters when characters learned what steel does as opposed to what silver does. It also added some gravitas to the beginning of Bleak Falls Barrow. And then there's our whole conversations on Shields and Bows.

And I´m glad. But in terms of researching combat...well, there´s nothing wrong with giving a fights a fantasy finesse, but if you want to make fights realistic...is there a way how to research it?

I think that only way is to actually learn how to fight with weapons, that is the only thorough research of combat I can imagine. How many people would actually research it that deep when they can instead make some fancy "chop, thrust, chop"?

I´m only simplifying it. As I said, I have nothing against a fantasy combat full of spins and other stuff.

I've been watching combat training videos and it helps to some extent, cause it slows down the action actually in a nice way so you can then write what's going on in the body when it's making that motion. But, no, I will not be wielding my own Bastard swords , shields, and recurve bows anytime soon, or lol, ever.

There is a point where I really must draw the line.

Ah, fantasy combat, full of spins and other stuffs.

Yeah, you have to draw a line somewhere. But wielding your own bastard swords feels so gooooood  And I really mean a sword!!

I have sword fights with my 5-year-old son, and I have the wounds to prove it! (Well, a wound). Does that count?

I dislike research. I like writing. I'm a writer, not a researcher. I'll do the minimum I feel is necessary. So far it's extended to help with naming characters of specific races, & the Dunmer language. For my AMOST short story I did quite a bit of reading up on Daedric Princes.

My approach to writing is: just write! Pretty much.
