Writers Discuss - Brainstorming (#1)

Brainstorming isn't really something I set out to do, more often than not ideas come to me when I'm half asleep. So usually when I'm trying to get to sleep and when that happens it's like "I can either write this down or spend the rest of the night unable to sleep because it wont leave me alone".

As for whether it's a good idea well... I don't think I've ever really thought about it, I just tend to run with it if it interests me

I have a tendancy for brainstorming induced insomnia, I guess that says enough. I have my best ideas either while trying to sleep or when I'm taking a shower. So it's pretty much random. However I have noticed that talking about those ideas tends to make them better. My little brother and one of my best friends have a tendancy of "volunteering" for that role.

As for my rituals: epic music (Two steps from hell and Vindsvept are among my favourites) and showers, also this way people won't hear me talk to myself.

As some of you may have noticed I'm not really a storycorner writer, I made a short story once though, I am however hoping to make writing my job. I am currently working/hiatus-ing on a novel of my own and am not limited by "lore" as I'm basicly the one writing the lore, it still has to be somewhat consistent so I do not have total freedom, but I think it's great. I finally put all those sleepless nights to use.

I’ve an idea for a future topic. I would ask that no one replies to this as it’s just a suggestion atm and I don’t want to waylay the relevant discussion.

Heroes and Villains… We all have them in our stories. Some switch sides or even act as if they are on the opposing side and simply reveal their true allegiance later. What ingredients makes a ’good’ Hero and what characteristics makes for a great ‘Villain’.

I think you could do a whole topic for both Heroes and for Villians. They're both complicated subjects. I'll think up some good questions for the discussion.

Aye, I'd love to read the "villain" piece next week. I've always been intrigued by that.

I just think of ideas when I'm either on the toilet or in bed. Yes I need to think of better places to think.

No those are fine, I would add the shower, the train, bus or any other form of public transportation.

Basicly any place where you have time to think of ideas is a good place.

Recent research has shown that doing non-demanding tasks is a great way of boosting creativity: something that takes just a little of your attention but allows your mind to wander in the background, if that makes sense.

I know, nothing like folding your laundry, doing the dishes, or even better (in my case) gardening to clear the mind and getting those ideas flowing.
