Would it work if I Role Play two characters at once?
The "curse of creativity" struck me and I am now being forced to decide between two potential Role Plays:
1) A "Queen of Hearts" build, based on the character from Alice in Wonderland:
Imperial, Female, with a loud appearance
She wears enchanted (HP up, MP up, HP regen up, MP regen up) red and white light armor (Imperial Armor, perhaps?) or enchanted red and white dresses, shoes, and tiaras.
Her primary skills are:
Light Armor (unless a dress looks better on her; then it is Wards that will protect her.)
Two-Handed Axe ("Off with her head!")
Illusion (Fury and eventual Fear spells)
Restoration (her healing spells are on her "Quick select" menu)
She somehow made her way to Skyrim after the end of her reign in Wonderland. She liked what she found and she decided to try to become Queen of Skyrim. Finding Elisif the Fair of Solitude and Ulfric Stormcloak of Windhelm warring over the title, she decided to try putting her hat in the ring...
She joined the Imperials in the Skyrim War of Unification because that put her closer to her ultimate foe: Elisif the Fair (the Queen feels she should be the only female ruler, and she should be the ruler of all Skyrim.)
The second RP I have is a Land Baron
Imperial, Male, needs to look wealthy.
Speechcraft (for better selling prices)
One-handed Blade
Destruction (yes, he's an Imperial Spellsword)
Restoration
Stealth
Lockpicking
Alchemy
Required quest: No Stone Unturned - for the extra gold because of the gems found
He came to Skyrim because he heard about land for sale. His being captured with Ulfric was simply bad luck.
He seeks to become Thane of all nine holds, with all three Hearthfire lands and houses to support the title.

For that, you'll probably get more info in the Lore Group.

Has anybody got any roleplay ideas for rituals? I always really liked the idea that RPing that a mage couldn't just cast powerful spells willy nilly but instead had to perform complex rituals first.

How can I role play a merchant that comes to Skyrim via ship, while still playing vanilla skyrim? Do I just quickly speed through Helgen, take a cart to Solitude, go to the port and pretend none of that ever happened?

What you could do is :
run through the tutorial meaning no kills, take the Carriage to Dawnstar and swim North, to the area where the Argonian you kill for the DB quests is. Save the game, watch a movie or better yet wait till the next day and start from there.
It's basically the "Shipwrecked" alternate start from the Mod. Solitude isn't really a good place to RP from the start because there are waaaay too many simple quests to do there and tons of ways to make money. On Dawnstar however... unless you cheat you don't have many ways to make gold other than mining, which a merchant probably wouldn't do. Plus it's fun to have to run away from Ice Trolls.
