Archery Theoretical Damage Calculations

  • March 20, 2013

    Ah, that's the problem. If I use 22 then it's 61 DPS.

To Nikolaj, I can't reply to your comment for some reason and the mystery of crossbow reload needs some kind of testing but at least we have the same sums now.

Anyway thanks for the help, I will change around my sums based on your enchantment comment at the start, and everything should be right by tomorrow

@1legassassin, my calculations were actually because I thought the crossbow damage was a bit off, not to check the reload time.

I found a video of some guy firing a crossbow. I went through it frame by frame and these are the numbers of crossbow reload speed I've found from the video.

The bolt is released at 51.965
    The string settles at 52.165
This gives a rest time of 0.2 seconds.

The hand is immediately taken off the crossbow after the string settles.
A new bolt is on the crossbow at 54.265
This gives a reload time of 2.1 seconds

This means that crossbows have a total reload speed of 2.3 seconds.

I'm gonna go find a video of some guy shooting a bow to check those numbers as well.

Yep, i just realised that and changed my comment haha!

Ok then, let me know and I will edit my calculations accordingly tomorrow when I am redoing them anyway to get the enchantment damage right

Okay, so I found a video. Analysing a bow is much harder, I'm going to have to use math!

In the video the guy is using a daedric bow, and I assume he has quick shot (otherwise it would take much longer to draw).

The bow starts to draw at 0.433
    The arrow settles at 2.202

Now assuming our equation is correct (and why assume it isn't?) the draw speed of this bow is 1.538

This gives it a nock time of 0.23

The arrow is fired at 2.802
The bow is at idle position at 3.837

This means the rest time is 1.035

This gives us a total reload time of 1.265

If anyone wants to help then I'd like a video of both a crossbow and a longbow firing a few bolts/arrows without quickshot and with.

Alright, so for the continious attack speed for bows I should put 1.265 + draw speed? and for crossbows 0.2 + a draw speed of 2.1, which is with or without quickshot?

  • March 21, 2013

I'd say those numbers are a bit more precise, but not as precise as I'd like them to be. I think the crossbow is without quickshot, but it's hard to tell when picking a random video.

If anyone wants to shoot a video firing both a crossbow and a longbow with and without quickshot then I'd be happy! Just a few shots would be great.

Alright then, just one thing- the continious attack speed of a crossbow with that calculation is still very fast at 2.3,as a long bow would have one of 2.265..

I'm gonna shoot TZ a message and see if he won't do a short video.

Good idea, we really need some way of getting accurate data
