The Ancient Nordic Pantheon

I know, right? it's weird but interesting and you want more. Skyrim, show me the clan Clever Man who drinks his brennivín or eats his fermented shark to induce a trance like state. Show me the ancient battle grounds where Old Mora led some foolhardy Nords into an ambush, or Orkey's followers shouted the life from a fortified town.

It is so frustrating in how rich it could have been and why I lose my temper over it at times. When all is said and done, though, we are roleplayers and story tellers - skalds in our own right  - and we can use as much or as little of this as we want. It is a source now, I say use it.

I can rather see Hermaeus Mora leading some outcast Nord mages who dared to seek knowledge when the others were comparing whose sword is bigger and shouting about Sovngarde))

Well let's not forget old Nords\Atmorans didn't hate or fear magic like they do now. Sure Herma-Mora would be seen as bad juju but he is still part of there pantheon and shown the respect he deserves.

I think Froki is a vestige of the older ways.

Indeed, but we could have had so much more.

I completely agree.  I love that Mara is a wolf and it fits so well with how wolves, hawks, and foxes really are in life. They mate for life, care for their young, they are all cunning predators. Qualities that an ancient people can admire. The bear has strength, and I wonder about the whale. They seem to depict a baleen whale in imagery, whereas imagine the coolness if it was more of an Orca type who had organized pods and a complex society. That being said, both the Baleen whale and bear are solitary creatures and are strong animals.

I do wonder what beat it out of the Nords because the totems are really quite awesome. Probably extended contact with the Alessian empire. Remember, it's thousands of years between the Atmoran migration, the Alessian Empire, and the finding of several other Empires. It sucks, but in thousands of years, shit changes. Cultures don't remain static. Makes me also wonder about Religion in other areas. How Imperialized are the other provinces with regard to religious practices.

Going to Sovngarde? Why not? Maybe they got high as kites and go? Remember, that the sun birds of Alinor tried to get to Aetherius too. I think shifting planes in a young world is entirely possible. The Crystal Tower could shift planes. Oblivion gates could open. Perhaps things were not so grounded in the ancient days. Perhaps we still had portals to the other other planes. Why not?

I dunno about you, but I'm certainly running with some of this shit. It's cool.

I like those thoughts Lis. We can see a definite form of sympathetic magic with those totems, an idea they played with a bit in ESO and that monastic order whose name completely escapes me.

    Edit: Ternion Monks.

The totems are cool. It still seems still strange to me that the Nords changed their religion. They always have been ones who influensed the Imperials, not the other way around.

I have nothing against going to Sovngarde, but I think it should be something epic, not for everyone and everyday.

Oh, and I'd so like to see those sunbirds, at least in a story...

I think the Nords change in religion is worthy of discussion, let's lore it through, aye?

I weep that it wasn't what we got. Instead we got the Nords worshipping the damn Nine Divines with a few people referring to certain gods by their old Nordic name and one guy in a shack in the middle of nowhere actually telling you about what one god used to be viewed as.

The original design was different. It was unique. It was infinitely better than the stupid Divines with a few altered names.
