Debate: Monks or Flunks

For this debate we are going to talk about the Monk Class. In previous games we have had the chance to truly play as a Monk, or an unarmored, unarmed badass. But in Skyrim they have made Unarmed very difficult to make viable without glitches, Marked for Death or being a Werewolf/Vampire in that form. I'd like it if as a team we can come up with a few ways to make this class fun and viable again.

We also will bring up the previous games attempts at making it fun and feel free to talk about other games that have managed to pull it off, but please try and relate it to Skyrim.

Now this isn't a discussion for "LOL I H8 GLITCEHS" people are free to talk about anyway that they have managed to make an Monk character fun to play. Your opinion is valued, wanted and the only rules are to have fun.. and not be a massive ass.

Real bummer that it's so difficult to make a proper Monk in Skyrim. I really hope they bring back Unarmed/H2H as a skill for TES 6. Or at least find some alternative means of allowing players to develop it naturally, like sidequests for Khajiit Temples that grant unique unarmed-themed perks upon completion or something.

In Skyrim, I think the best ways have pretty much all been explored in successful builds like the No snakes aLive's Master Monk, my Regulator, and Zach's new Obliterator. MFD, Zach's hit-stacking trick, Fortify Archery potions, enchantment stacking/looping ... That's pretty much it.

DB, I think you posted this discussion twice, anyway I'll re-post my reply here.

My way of playing a Monk-ish character is using a ring and gauntlets enchanted with fortify Unarmed damage. Now, before you think It's the same old boring way, I use a bit of Tips & Tricks magic to make it quite a bit more powerful; y leveling Alchemy and Enchanting to 100 and fully perking both, I spend about 20-60 minutes brewing Fortify Enchanting potions, then enchanting a ring and pair of gloves with fortify Alchemy and repeating untill I get to about 200 of Fortify Unarmed combat.

I normally wear Monk Robes(what else?), with Hide Bracers, and a Gold Ring. For protection I use flesh spells, usually only up to Ebony, and for ranged combat I like to keep the "classic" monk look by using a Hunting Bow with Steel Arrows. Pretty same-old, but it gets the job done.

The Monk class is still plenty viable even without viable unarmed since they always have Archery to fall back on. As for making unarmed viable, Teccam nailed it; there have been several successful builds that utilized different methods to accomplish just that.

I've never been a big fan of unarmed combat but for me a Monk isn't necessarily defined by his fists. The previous games had other offensive skills in the class's arsenal. If I were to play a monk, it would probably be one of the builds which explore the marksman or staff use aspect of combat.

Well we have probably covered everything haven't we.

I doubt we'd end up with more unarmed options in Elder Scrolls 6 but I enjoy being wrong sometimes. I think there are a multitude of ways of doing it and if they implement anything I'd be insanely interested, probably play unarmed for a year.

So what have you thought of Unarmed in previous Elder Scrolls games, I personally though Oblivion did it well but Morrowind, well in Morrowind it was insanely difficult to level if I remember correctly.

Focusing on the staff element would be cool, I'd like it if we had more options for staves as well but we've been forced into limited skills/weapons, of course Morrowind's Throwing Weapons made playing a Monk so much fun. nothing beats flinging ninja stars at people (even if they sort of sucked).

So we've had a few comments on the physical side of Monks and to me that is always the main focus of discussions and builds but what about the defensive side of it, has anyone experimented with anything except Alteration to create a character that can survive in combat easily (with protection)

I had a build idea once that utilized other forms of magical defense (by other I mean not Flesh Spells) but that was a long time ago, I want to go back and test it so I can make a non-alteration monk viable, well the armour side of him anyway.

Ninja Stars in Morrowind where Epic, how dare you say they sucked! Once again, the (Bi-)Weekly Debate has gone on to Morrowind.

From a damage perspective (and cost) they weren't that good. The Theory and idea was great and I wish it was something they kept but honestly they were difficult to use, find and expensive(ish) to buy.
