Question about Skyrim's Thieves' Guild quests (big spoiler!)

    I understand that the Thieves' Guild considers the death penalty as an extreme last resort.

     

    However, what would they have done to Mercer had he been forced to "face the Guild?"

     

    Possibilities:

     

    1) Banishment (preferably with some sort of mark identifying him as a thief.)

    2) Cut something of his off (one of his fingers or a whole hand, for example)

    3) Find some way to turn him over to the authorities

    4) Completely drain his money and take his house
