The Knight of Ald Skar Chapter III

  • Endless sea. Nothing but the sound of the ocean from all directions and the constant creaking and rocking of the boat to keep me company. The Nord crew are friendly enough as they are used to Dunmer and our ways but I miss the company of my own people. I miss the company of her.

Esha Idrassi was her name. I have not and never again shall meet anyone so perfect. Her eyes were a twinkling and naughty red; her hair dark and unruly; and her smile... My gods, if I could just witness her smile one last time with my own eyes rather than the one which my memory clings to like Spore Pod seeds slipping through my fingers, it would brighten my soul which has known nothing but darkness since my last glimpse. I am in control, I write this with a steady hand. I have no tears.

On one cold night as I lay on my bed reading a passage from the Sermons I heard a noise outside my room. The sounds of stifled laughter and the swishing of weapons made me groan with misery: The Bouyant Armigers were back with more of their "friendly rivalry" and, as usual, I was to be their rival. I leapt from my bed and grabbed my mace while outside I heard them quietly shushing one another with supressed giggles, followed by an ominous, whispered countdown. "Three, two, one..."

"CHARGE!" Three Glass-clad Armigers yelled as they smashed through my door, each armed with Trama Roots for weapons and pelting me with Mucksponge Slime. This was a new terror and the ferocity of their culinary attack had me at an immediate disadvantage and all I could do was shield my face from their projectiles whilst roaring, "you have sealed your fate, may our gods have mercy on you!" Luckily for me my outburst worked in my favour because they were immediately and inexplicably overcome with hysterics. I took that opportunity to launch my own counter attack, hurling my Muck-coated body into them and sending us all crashing to the floor.

However, the mer I landed on took all my anger and fury away as she looked up at me, her body still shaking with laughter, saying, " you have broken my root" indicating the snapped foliage she still held in her right hand.

My breath gone from my body, I leapt off of her and got down on one knee. "I am sorry, my lady" was all I could say, head hung in shame and embarrassment. The three knights picked themselves up, the two males almost doubled over from mirth. She, however, knelt in front of my and gently lifted my chin so that our eyes met. With a cheeky smile and twinkling eyes she said, "do not worry, sir knight. I know a smith who will fix this branch and make it better than new." With that she rose and left, followed by the other two grinning idiots.

I have no idea how long I remained in that position, my mouth hanging agape and my senses overwhelmed by her presence. I could smell her and hear her musical voice long after she had gone. Finally I came to my senses and unsteadily rose to my feet, walked out into the wet and cold Vivec City night, lost in thought and unfamiliar feelings.

From that day forward I never knew peace again.

Somewhere inside me between my heart and my stomach is a void which threatens to rip me in two.

Please have mercy, Vivec. Just let me cry.
