The Dockworker: Author's Note: The Calamity

  • So I've been absent. Again.

I don't plan these things. It's just that my new job is super demanding and I don't have as much time on my hands as I used to. Unfortunately, this delay is likely to be a bit longer, because...

...my motherboard died. So did my processor. My hard drive is fine, but because there's a lot of madness and skullnumbery associated with new motherboards and preexisting files, I've basically had to completely wipe everything off my system.

The Skyrim folder (and, of course, everything to do with the Dockworker & Co.) made it out alive, but I've not yet tried to reinsert it because I don't know how the files will work with the new install after I re-download Skyrim from Steam.

If you know anything about how Skyrim treats its saves and data, do let me know. I'm hoping it's as simple as replacing the new install with the old install's contents, but Skyrim is pretty finicky as a rule, so I don't want to break anything.

Rest assured, if worst comes to worst and the files are lost, the story won't end. I'll still write it--I know what's going to happen. But I think everyone will agree with me if I say it'd be a travesty for such a screenshot-heavy storyblog to die in a wall of text.

Yeah, I had that same thing too. I pulled the heatsink off the first time and was like, "Huh, hmm" and then had to put some of my own back on. Somehow I did it wrong and the CPU proceeded to instantly overheat and fry. And that somehow also killed the mot...  more

Oh... Whoops, hold on, I forgot that my cpu had thermal gel pre-applied. There wasn't any memory of putting the stuff on myself, so my mind assumed it never happened. XD

But-but-but Okan-Zeeus, it was the thermal gel on the water cooler  There's always got to be a heatsink, and apparently I cocked mine up.

Clement, I am glad to see that you have returned! It is a shame, what happened to your PC, and for that you have my condolences, but I am still glad that you have returned!

Thermal gel can be tricky stuff... Makes me glad I have water cooling now. Either way, happy to hear you're getting things back together! I've seen a lot of your posts from the archives - seems you've written a great deal. I look forward to seeing what ne...  more

The hardware failure was my fault. I don't know, but it definitely happened after I replaced the thermal gel.

Ben, I have my PC from around 2008 and never had to replace any part because of hardware failure. It depends on a lot of factors, there may be people who replace their consoles once a month

Not after that comment, Ben C -_-

For the record, my 360 also died of hardware failure several years ago.

Good news, everyone! Just checked; all of My Documents survived! Sadly, %appdata% did not, so that's bye-bye to all my Rome 2 files, but Skyrim lives!
