Whiterun is your favourite city, says poll

  • Last weekend's poll asked which of Skyrim's five main cities was your personal favourite. Just over 1500 people cast a vote, and this was the result

The result proved to be a comprehensive win for the city of Whiterun, taking just under half of the votes. Why? Well, it can't be a total co-incidence that Whiterun tends to be the first city that we visit when playing the game. In addition it has a central location, a reasonable climate (its not snowing all the time like in Windhelm!) and has pretty well everything needed.

It's perfectly possible to 'settle' in Whiterun. Breezehome makes a decent base for a campaign around the province of Skyrim, and there are all the various shops, an inn, a chapel, a market and a friendly local population. Perfect.

The balance of the votes were relatively evenly distributed, with Solitude slipping into second place narrowly from Markath and Riften. Down at the foot of the poll we had Windhelm with just 9% of the poll. Not surprising to me, as Bethesda seem to have gone out of their way to make Windhelm feel sparse and 'gritty' for plot purposes.

Any surprises here - or pretty much what you would have expected from this poll?

I think a big part of it is the atmosphere Jeremy Soule's amazing "Streets of Whiterun" creates. I get goosebumps every time

I could have sworn it was "Markarth", and not "Markath".

My favorite is Solitude simply because of the mansion I own there. The mansion has everything I could want: enchanting station, alchemy lab, close proximity to some shops, lots of room, two mannequins, and it was FREE. For those of you who don't know ther...  more

I think most people chose Whiterun simply because it's one of the first places you're usually going to visit (Even ignoring the main quest, it's always the first one I end up going to. Even if I go entirely the opposite way of Riverwood.) and it's the si...  more

Well Whiterun is the most useful town.  When you fast-travel to it, you are 5 steps from a blacksmith shop (with TWO smiths, so TWO times the Moolah!) But also all of its shops are fairly close to the entrance, but it is also a fairly pleasant looking/lay...  more

Solitude came a close second in my book after I had explored all the Major cities while stealing their stuff.it was wide and open there was plenty to see or do.

Whiterun was my favourite, seeing as the house in town is right next to all the smithing gear and 2 shopkeepers!

    Riften is my favourite.
I think that's only because I've explored lots of The Rift and completed the Thieves Guild in it's entirety.  I own Honeyside and for whatever reason becoming the Thane is impossible with a bugged Yarl's quest.  I love the fa...  more

I'm having trouble making a character to go through the Stormcloak questline because I love Whiterun so much....
