Acquiring Spells in Skyrim

  • Hi guys, I was pleasantly surprised I got a decent amount of comments on my last blog post, so I've decided to make a new discussion every two days leading up to Skryim's release. Today I want to ask you guys about how you think you will gain new spells in Skyrim. In Oblivion, you could really only buy new spells (of the top of my head I can only remember earning two spells through quests). When I recently watched Skyrim's demo again, I noticed a "tome"? (correct me if I'm wrong) which seemed to be a paper or scroll you can find in Skyrim which will teach you new spells. This is pretty exciting to me, as I'd much rather find or earn spells than buy them, treating them more like weapons. What do you guys think? Do you think we will have more alternative ways to acquire spells in Skyrim? Does this excite you at all? Thanks!

Definitely need to integrate achieving spells to the game since in Oblivion, buying spells is not really fun or efficient. I don't like go around store to store to find the correct spell i am looking for.

I heard in a gamespot report(pretty sure it was gamespot please do not hate me if I am wrong) that in riverwood the guy who he got the golden claw quest from sold him a frenzy spell a oakflesh(armor spell) and a raise zombie spell. I know that did not rea...  more

In one of the G4 reviews (text not the video one) there was some description of the quest rewarded spells.Ā  Apparently one of the reviewers was given a fireball spell by someone at the College of Whispers so that they could complete a test to gain entry, ...  more

The tomes are confirmed- they teach you a spell immediately as you read them. Maybe spells can be learned from certain people too- but i'm sad spell creation got ditched.

Ya I agree that some dabbling in necromancy, would be fun. The latest footage mentioned getting a healing spell for a reward for completing a quest, so I think that speculation should be correct Runered

    We will acquire spells by:
1.Ā  Purchase.Ā  Spell Merchants will be around.Ā  Most will probably sell only to guild members.
2.Ā  Tomes.Ā  These will be scattered around, buy some, find some, and if it suits you - steal some.
    3. Quest rewards...  more

I couldn't agree more with you! Almost every charater I made in Oblivion was a magicĀ user and I remember always having to go to some NPC to buy spells. I agree that earning spells through quests make them more meaningful and adds a whole other layer of im...  more

Hello! Yes this excites me very much. Makes your spells actually meaningful, or it does to me anyways. Plus would be cool if there are unique spells that are hidden deep inside a dungeon somewhere. And i hope this is the case for necromancy spells. Pete s...  more
