Lutherus Sotasius - Chapter V, Part V

  • THE COLLEGE OF WINTERHOLD

From the Journal of Lutherus Sotasius. Date of Entry: Heartfire, 4th, 4E, 201.

Lutherus arrived in Winterhold later that evening, gleaming with accomplishment as he made his way to the steps leading toward the College of Winterhold, bastion of Skyrim for learned individuals such as he for further investigation into the arts of the Magi, or Magicka to the layperson. The sponsorship of 1000 Septim provided by the Empire amplified Lutherus' confidence, as with the money he already had he could afford the journey to Solitude. Not only that, but before turning in his Imperial Armour before going away on leave he could also afford a new set of clothes, and even with these expenditures he still had plenty of Septim left to afford the College tuition. Yes, it seemed like all was finally going the way Lutherus had intended.

"Welcome." Said a female Elf, guarding the College walkway. "I am Faralda, Senior Wizard of the College of Winterhold."

"Good Evening. I am here to enrol." Replied Lutherus.

"Very well, Imperial. As you might be aware, the College of Winterhold requires a 2000 Septim deposit before anybody can enter. You must also pass a small test that will demonstrate your power as an Apprentice."

"I have the fee. What do you need me to do?"

"Simple, really. Show me what you're mind is capable of."

Lutherus, being an Apprentice learner of the Illusion school of Magi took a deep breath, before shutting his eyes. Placing his index and forefinger on each hand to his temples, he lowered his head in extreme concentration. Inside his mind, through his archive of studied magi did he focus his energies on his ability to turn even the most staunch and loyal of defenders into a pathetic cowardly weakling. With a sharp exhale and thrust his open hands to the cold air, did he cast his focused energy. Faralda was very pleased with the Apprentice's execution of the test. "Well done Apprentice! I'll take you to Mirabelle Ervine, our Master Wizard. Please follow me."

"Thank you, Faralda." Replied Lutherus, as he followed on. Faralda led Lutherus across the bridge and into the College's walls, where Mirabelle was waiting. Faralda introduced him to the Master Wizard, before returning to her post.

"So, you're looking to enrol?" Asked Master Wizard Ervine.

    "Yes, ma'am."

"Ma'am? How quaint. Please, just address me as my title suggests. Master Wizard Ervine."

    "Yes. Sorry Master Wizard Ervine."

"Good. Now, orientation for every student begins tomorrow. Before then I can show you to your dorm but first, I need you to give me your deposit of 2000 Septim."

"Yes, it's all here Master Wizard Ervine." Replied Lutherus, as he handed over his tuition.

"Excellent! Now, follow me please!" She replied, as she led Lutherus down to the Students Quarter - The Hall of Attainment.

"This is your personal living quarters." Said Master Wizard Ervine. "Everything in this room is yours to use however you wish. Keep in mind though that you are sharing this quarter with several other students. We out of courtesy for them, that you keep any noise to a reasonable level." Lutherus made into his room, and began storing his many books he had acquired during his stay in Skyrim. "One more thing, Lutherus." She continued, as he was organising his massive inventory of reading material. "Tomorrow morning at sunrise we are having Orientation in the Hall of Elements. Do not be late."

"Sunrise tomorrow morning. No problem Master Wizard Ervine. Thank you!" Replied Lutherus, as Mirabelle left. Lutherus gazed at his room in excitement, he could still hardly believe he was finally here, at the College of Winterhold! With the night rolling in, and the prospect of waking up early tomorrow for Orientation, Lutherus decided to call it a night and retire to his bed. The following morning, Lutherus woke an hour early to the sounds of paced footsteps upstairs.

Lutherus looked down upon his bed and had noticed that through the night, one of the College staff had laid out a uniform for him as well as pin a letter to the robes.

Lutherus happily obliged, and adorned the robes without hesitation. The Robes fitted ever so snugly, they were by far a much better comfortable fit than the Armour he wore in service to the Empire. The noise in the quarters grew stronger, as more students gathered and chatted in anticipation of the days events, the first Orientation for the coming College year. Lutherus, adorned in his Novice garments took an apple from his room and headed outside to join them at the Hall of the Elements.

He entered the Lecture Hall, astounded and amazed by it's complexity. Arriving 10 minutes early, Lutherus was able to drink in all the sights that were there to see. He walked slowly, raptured by the Halls decorum and enthralled by it's architechture. His footsteps echoed the massive room, as he made his way to the gathering of students on the opposite end. "Welcome, young Apprentice!" Came a voice from a much older man. He wasn't dressed at all like the students, so Lutherus surmised that this must of been a faculty member.

    "Is...this Orientation?" Lutherus asked.

"Of course! Please, come and join us young Apprentice. We will be starting soon." Replied the old man. Lutherus walked towards the group, exchanging smiles and nods with his fellow students. He removed his hood out of respect for the older gentlemen, as did all of the other students did too. The old gentlemen eyed through the cold fogged window, watching as the sun began to rise. "Alright! Ladies and Gentlemen! Students of the College of Winterhold! I welcome you to this most prestigious and prideful establishment! My name is Tolfdir, Master Wizard of the College of Winterhold. I am also the Head of Alteration here, so if any of you fine young Wizards happen to be interested in the practice of Manipulation of the Elements, you'll be seeing a lot of me for this semester!" Lutherus watched on with interest, as Tolfdir well and truly captured the awe and confidence of the students.

Tolfdir continued. "Now, I'm sure as you all have been made aware of the garments you are wearing. During your application to the College, a test orchestrated by Faralda to determine which School of Magicka you wished to practice and research here was carried out. This is so we can get an accurate bearing on your capabilities, and start your continued education from a manageable level for you. Your Garments are yours and yours only, any loss or damage of these items will have to be paid for by you. Let that be a stern warning. If your garments are incorrect, or if you feel you have the wrong robes in relation to your chosen vocation, please raise your hand now so we can address it as soon as possible."

Tolfdir scanned the room. Not a single hand rose. "Excellent! Your lectures shall be hosted here, in the Hall of the Elements. Here is where you will practice your research, via Spell Tomes or Scrolls. There are also facilities here that are meant to encourage you to broaden your horizon in becoming adept Mages and Wizards. We have Alchemist's laboratories, Enchantment Workshops, Stave Manifestation as well as our very own Scribe, where you can write your own Scrolls. Now, do remember these facilities only exist to encourage you - there is no need for you to take extra classes although it will ultimately be in your best interests to at least try. But at the same time, whilst we encourage you make the most of your time here, for your own sake don't overdo your commitments. We would rather see you excel in one vocation, rather than scrape by on all of them. Later on today, you will go to your assigned lecturers for your class orientation. As I earlier mentioned, I am the Head Lecturer of the School of Alteration. Drevis Neloren is the Head of Illusion. Colette Marence is the Head of Restoration. And finally, Faralda, the Head of Destruction. You may wonder why I don't mention the Head for Conjuration, that is purely because that the College has decided that the practice of such dangerous arts is strictly forbidden unless approval has been permitted by each Head for the School. Without approval, and I must make myself clear on this, that any practice of the Conjuration School of Magicka without prior permission is strictly forbidden at all times. Anyone who is caught without authorisation will be expelled from the College immediately."

The captivated students looked on, eager to begin the day. "Good, I think that's a stern warning enough!" Finished Tolfdir. "Now, please do familarise yourself with the College and it's facilities. Browse the College Librarium. Get to know your neighbors. But do find your way back to your assigned lecturers this afternoon. That's all Apprentice's!"
